From the New York Times bestselling author of Rumor Has Itand the Lucky Harbor series comes the story of a woman whose world is turned upside down by one night's torrid fling...

Veterinary intern Emily can’t believe she wound up in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho, instead of the Los Angeles clinic she had always imagined. Now she has to put her plans to move to L.A. on hold for a whole year while she fulfills the obligation of her vet school scholarship.

Then Wyatt, her gorgeous one-night stand from a Reno vet conference, introduces himself as her new boss. And Emily is just as drawn to his seductive looks and quiet strength as she was on that very steamy night. She soon learns that Wyatt isn’t just a laid-back doctor, but a delicious alpha male tempting her away from her carefully laid-out plans...

Emily sat on a fallen log and leaned back. When she was little, she’d loved to try to star watch. In LA, this was tricky because of all the city lights, not to mention smog. Doing it here, in the land of the big sky, was a whole new ball game. “I’m not lonely,” she said to the horse, who snorted again and swished his tail.
  “Good. Cuz you’re not alone.”
Two long legs came into her peripheral. Wyatt crouched at her side and looked into her face.  “How are you?”
  “Fine,” she said.
Nodding, he sat on the log at her side and leaned back, presumably to look at whatever she was looking at. “Pretty night.”
His hands were behind him, his shoulder and a part of his chest brushing her arm and shoulder. Actually it was more like he was encircling her within his arm span, which was considerable. It was a guy move, an alpha guy move, and it made her feel ... protected.
She was getting far too used to that, she thought with a sigh. “Where is everyone?”
“Gone,” he said, and there was an odd quality to his voice that had her taking a second look at him. He didn’t take his gaze off the sky so she got him in profile, the tousled hair, the fine lines crinkling the corners of his eyes from long days out in the sun, the square, scruffy jaw. A broad shoulder built to take on the weight of the world.
He’d been working his ass off, here at Belle Haven, helping Dell take up the slack for the out-of-town Jade, and then going home and helping his sisters with the monstrous house they were fixing up. He did so much for everyone, and she found herself wanting to do something for him. Make him smile. Make him relax. Make him forget, even for a few minutes…  She nudged him with her shoulder.
He nudged her back and turned to look at her then, his eyes dark and unfathomable behind his glasses.
Chickening out, she turned her head this time, and stared up at the sky as he had been only a few seconds before.
  “Emily.”
When she didn’t tear her gaze off the stars, he leaned in and nipped her ear.
Sucking in a breath, she looked at him again. His was still dark, but there were things swirling in those dark depths now. Need. Heat.
  Affection.
  He stole her breath.
“Let the record state,” she said, reaching out to snatch off his glasses, “that I don’t always make the first move.”
He blinked in momentary confusion, and probably also because he could no longer see. He opened his mouth to say something, but she sank her fingers into his hair and kissed him, hard and long and deep.
“Emily,” he said when they broke for air, his voice rough and husky.
She climbed into his lap and then pushed him backwards off the log so that he fell to his back in the wild grass with her straddling him.
Laughing, he slid his hands beneath her top and up her back, drawing out a delicious shiver from her.  Then his hands slid slowly down her spine, and into the backs of her jeans.  “Let the record also state,” he said in a delicious growl. “Who made the rest of the moves.”

My Review

Then Came You is the fifth installment in Jill Shalvis's Animal Magnetism series, and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. In it, we're back at the delightful Belle Haven veterinary clinic, where apparently being outrageously hot, witty and sexy is a prerequisite for all employees. I'm not much of an animal person anymore (due to allergies), but my kids are about to be proud parents of a duck and a chick (stealth FRIENDS reference, FTW!) and let me just say, if we had a clinic like Belle Haven, the duck and chick and I would be visiting on the regular.

Anyway. Besides the great setting, Then Came You comes complete with an adorably awkward set-up between lead characters Wyatt and Emily. Imagine you walk in to your first day on the job. Hot vets are everywhere, being all nice and charming and welcoming you into their work-home.  You're so ready to begin your career, to put your time in so you can move on to a brighter future in gorgeous Los Angeles. Then it's time to meet the vet with whom you will be working closely over the coming year. Your eyes meet across the crowded room....only to notice that hunky vet is your one-night stand from a convention in Reno. That sound you heard is the record scratch of doom. What happens in Reno is supposed to stay in Reno, right? Or something like that.

And this little predicament is what drives Then Came You. Despite the lingering attraction, Wyatt and Emily know they should maintain a strictly professional relationship, keep their distance. That's not so easy when the one person you need to stay away from is the one person who sets your knickers on fire. Never mind the fact that Wyatt has deep-seeded abandonment issues and is living with his two volatile yet hilarious and badass sisters, and that Emily has absolutely no intentions of staying in Sunshine once her year is up. It's a perfectly impossible situation and I loved seeing these two work through the issues that hold them back, towards a future together.

It is said the course of true love never runs smoothly. That may be true, but Wyatt and Em's course was awkward and hilarious and flat-out sexy. (this happens to be my favorite course)

Then Came You is only the second Jill Shalvis book I've read so far, and I have to say there's something about her style that suits me so well. I think it's that she's nailed the perfect mixture of endearing characters and story that's full of both sexy and humorous moments. If you're looking for feel-good romance with a strong dose of sexy, look no further than Then Came You.

Favorite Quotes:

His eyes darkened a little bit, and she knew he was remembering the other things she'd touched that night.
  And kissed...
Oh this was bad. Very, very bad. "We have to go back to being strangers," she said.
  He just stared at her.
  "We are strangers," she said.
"Yeah. Strangers who know what each other's O-face looks like --"
She covered his mouth but it was too late. And great, now she was sweating again. "We shouldn't know that," she said through her teeth, "except someone insisted on keeping the lights on!"
He smiled, wrapping his fingers around her wrist and pulled her hand from his mouth. "I like the visuals."

He was sitting there, still wearing his puppy and kitty tie. And those glasses that made her want to steam them up. The combination should've made him look utterly ridiculous, but it didn't. Instead, it gave the big, leanly muscled, sexy-as-hell guy an unexpected softness, and she wanted to kiss him. The kind of kiss where you tasted each other for a good long time, where you tried not to bite but maybe you bit a little anyway.
"You're staring at me," he said.
  "Am not."
She could practically hear him smile. Good lord, she was out of control. He was over there being all Captain Platonic, and she wanted to rip that tie off and use it to bind him to her bed.

"I forgot to be quiet," Emily said some time later as she sat up on the couch, eyes wide, hair wild, cheeks rosy, her lips still wet and a little swollen. "Was I loud?"
Wyatt leaned over and kissed her worried mouth. "I don't know."
"How could you not know, you were right here."
He grinned. "Well, the first time, your legs were around my ears, so I couldn't hear."

RUMOR HAS IT BLOG TOUR: REVIEW, INTERVIEW WITH JILL SHALVIS, AND GIVEAWAY

Welcome to The Bookish Babe's stop on the Rumor Has It Blog Tour! My stop includes a review interview with author Jill Shalvis, and giveaway.

Rumor Has It (Animal Magnetism, #4)Series: Animal Magnetism #4
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Publication Date: 11/5/13
Format: eARC
Pages: 304

He’ll help unleash the new woman in her…

Special Ops soldier Griffin Reid doesn’t exactly have happy memories of growing up in Sunshine, Idaho. He’s only come back to recover from a war injury, and while he refuses to admit he’s in a weakened state, he finds comfort in the last person he’d expect.

Kate Evans teaches fourth grade science in Sunshine, the place she’s always called home. Dreaming of graduate school and a happily-ever-after, she’s desperate to break out of the monotony of Sunshine. Luckily, a certain sexy man has just come back into her life.

To Griffin, Kate as always been his little sister’s friend, but now he’s finding her to be so much more. As both attempt to forge their paths, they must decide if their passionate connection can turn into something lasting…

Jill Shalvis is an author who's been recommended to me often as I've become more focused on Contemporary Romance. I've begun buying her books, hoping to get started soon but Rumor Has It is my first read. And now I can see why Shalvis is so popular.

Rumor Has It is a the fourth book in the Animal Magnetism series, but can absolutely be read as a standalone, as I did. Without recapping or becoming an "info dump", Shalvis quickly and discreetly fills in the relationships and details from the previous stories, without my even realizing it. Better yet, with such great characters, relationships and history, I am now super anxious to read the first three books.

Rumor Has It is led by Griffin and Kate. Kate is selfless, smart, funny and sweet (even though she hates to be called sweet!) heroine. She's a teacher, a great daughter, sister, and friend. Kate was wonderfully awkward and hilarious, especially when she gets nervous with Griffin and spouts off random sex facts.

Griffin Reid is a returned soldier, wounded, though he's not willing to share his pain. He's home for his sister's wedding, and to maybe face his troubled past with his father. Griffin wants Kate, but would never want to hurt her. Too bad he can't seem to stay away from her, or resist her beauty and quirky charm.

Rumor Has It has several different elements that are favorites of mine. For starters, the returning warrior. Soldiers are sexy, brave, and honorable. That's a sure-fire way to automatically get me on the hero's side. Another favorite is the little sister's best friend trope. It's not exactly forbidden, but causes enough angst to be interesting. And lastly, the funny/quirky small town romance. I personally don't want nosy townsfolk in my business, but I love it in my books.

So what's not to love about Rumor Has It? Absolutely nothing. This is a story that had me smiling from beginning to end, with more than a fair amount of swooning throughout. I would label it a comfort read, but also a really good read.

Favorite Quotes:

"So, any last minute advice, girls?"
"Make sure to train him from the get-go," Lilah said. "Toilet seat down."
"And he should sleep in the wet spot at least half the time," Jade said.
"And don't let him contort your body into a position during sex so that your stomach pooches and your boobs end up in your armpits with your ankles near your ears," Miranda said. "That's just not flattering for anyone."
Everyone stared at her for one awkward beat.
"Um, thank you," Holly finally said. "That's good advice."   ~eARC, 34%

As if he was going anywhere now. And it wasn't for her either. Even in his lust-induced haze he knew that. This was for him. He needed to be touched by her, needed to feel something with her. Needed to lose himself for this beat in time. In her.    ~eARC, 43%

I would like to welcome Jill Shalvis to the blog today!  Jill is the bestselling author of over four dozen romance novels, including her upcoming sexy contemporary romance RUMOR HAS IT, book four in the Animal Magnetism series set in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho. Jill is known for stories that are sexy, fun and full of heart. The 4-time Rita nominee and 3-time National Readers Choice winner makes her home near Lake Tahoe. Visit her website at www.jillshalvis.com for a complete book list and daily blog.
Can you tell our readers a little bit about the Animal Magnetism (Sunshine, Idaho) series, and where your inspiration came from?
JS:
I’ve always wanted to write a series where I could incorporate cute animals. Cute animals and sexy heroes together, who can resist that. So I came up with a series about a set of wildly alpha brothers running an animal center in Sunshine, Idaho at the base of the Bitteroot Mountains.

What is your favorite thing about writing this series? The sexy men, the heroines, or the animals?
JS:
All of the above, but okay, let me admit the truth – the combination of hot guys and adorable animals is pretty much irresistible for me.

What do you think makes romance readers and the romance community so strong?
JS:
I think what makes the romance community so strong is that romance readers are awesome. They’re loyal and dedicated and always so willing to help support our community by talking about the books and making it okay to read whatever you want, may that be straight contemporary, romantic suspense, erotica, whatever. I love that. As far as having a strong presence, that is an accidental cause of working alone most of the days out of the year. Reaching out to romance readers and writers via social media is just a really great way to not always be alone.  J
Are contemporaries your favorite genre to read as well as to write? If so, can you give our readers some of your favorite recommendations?
JS:
Yes, though I love to read everything, across all genres. Heck, I’m happy reading the back of a cereal box. But as for my recommendations in the contemporary genre, you can’t go wrong with Robyn Carr, Kristan Higgins, Carly Phillips, Susan Mallery, Lori Foster, Rachel Gibson…

Do you think reading romance makes us expect more from our own romantic partners? What effect do you think romance has on those that read it?
JS:
We’re writing fiction. Not nonfiction. But made up stories, fantasies really. I’m not writing “How To Have A Hot Romance.” Or “How To Train Your Significant Other Into Being A Perfect Mate.” I’m writing a fictional tale. I think our readers are sharp, and are well aware and capable of knowing the difference between a pat Happily Ever After and real life. If I can provide someone with a fantasy, a little escape from her reality, then I am considering it a job well done.

You write so many wonderful contemporaries, how do you keep each novel fresh and exciting?
JS:  Keeping it fresh is a constant battle, and I struggle with that daily. I just love writing, and this genre, and work hard to do the job so I can keep doing it and pleasing readers. Also, I find that stalking neighbors and friends, and being extremely nosy about their personal lives and conflicts is very helpful. J
What’s your advice for a first-time pet owner?
1. Read up on your pet, on the specific breed.
2. Be patient.
3. Be patient.
4. Be patient.  J
5. Oh, and if there’s training issues? Chances are it’s you, so revisit #1.

The interactions shared between you and Alpha Man always entertain; what is a recent “He Said, She Said” between you and Alpha Man that we may not have heard yet?
Me: What are you eating?
Him (mouth full): Nothing
Me: It smells like Oreos.
Him: …
Me:  Are you … eating Oreos? I thought we were out of cookies!!
Him: There’s only four left.
Me:  I need two.
Him:  I’ll give you one.
Me:  No! You can’t eat just one cookie!!! There’s a rule!!!
Him:  Show me the book where this rule lives.
Me:  I’LL WRITE YOU THE $%#!#$!@ book, give me a second cookie and no one gets hurt!
Him:  Is it possible that you need something to go with that cookie?
Me:  Milk?
Him:  I was thinking Midol…
Your friendship with Kristan Higgins and your friendly battle for “Man Wars” has become infamous. Why do you two connect so well?
JS:  I think our chemistry translates well because it’s genuine. You can’t fake a real friendship. We connect on lots of levels, such as competing for readers (kiddin!), and because we’re both raising aliens—er, teenagers.

What’s next for Jill Shalvis?
JS:  If you read RUMOR HAS IT, you may notice a new vet is working at Belle Haven. Dr. Wyatt Stone. He and his two sisters, Darcy and Zoe, are each going to get their own story next year. J

My Teasers~

Her mouth was still pressed to his throat, which was deliciously rough with at least a day's growth, and when she breathed him in, he exhaled slow and long, so indelibly male. She blamed the sexy sound for what she did next.
  She licked him.
He jerked as if she'd taken a bite out of him, and he backed away so fast that he bumped up against the tall bookshelf behind him. "What the hell was that?" he demanded.
  "My tongue?"      ~eARC, 13%

"So beautiful," he whispered against her heated flesh, and trailed his tongue over her fingers, getting his first sweet taste of her. "Let me in. Let me have you."    ~eARC, 44%

So, I have two teasers, one funny and one sexy. I couldn't help myself! Be sure to check out my review for Rumor Has It, later this week.
