Jack Rossi is Dare Island’s new police chief. The laid-back North Carolina community is just what he needs to recover from a rocky marriage and a big-city police department.  He’s learned his lesson: no more high-profile women or high-pressure jobs. The last thing he wants is an unconventional alt girl rocking his world.   Grad student Lauren Patterson made headlines when she kept a bank robbery from going bad.  She’s fled to Dare Island to clear her head and focus on writing her story. However, sexy Jack Rossi is a distraction that’s too hot to ignore, and it’s igniting an affair too combustible to resist—or quit.   But when their pasts come looking for them, Jack and Lauren find themselves fighting for the future they deserve, whatever the price.

Ashton Garrison walked away from her current life to escape the one thing she’s unwilling to face. She knows her decision may be selfish, but in the end, leaving will be far less painful for everyone. Now she has one goal: live life to the fullest with no regrets and no attachments. What Ashton doesn’t count on is how fate always seems to find a way to screw up any good plan.   Nathan Lockton specializes in locating a mark. He’s done it over and over again—no attachments and no emotion necessary. What he thought was a routine lost-and-found job has forced Nathan to deal with something he has always ignored—his feelings. He’s never fallen for a target, yet he’s never met anyone like Ashton. Now deep in a dilemma, Nathan must decide to follow his heart, or complete the job he was hired to do.   Love can come when you least expect it. The question is: If the odds are stacked against you, how far are you willing to go for the one you love?

My Thoughts

The Woodfalls Girls series is yet another I've read out of order. I began the series with the novella Cross Country Christmas, then went to book two, Misunderstandings. And now, here I am at book one, No Attachments. Each book can easily be read as a standalone, but I'm glad to know how it all begins.

No Attachments is a sweet love story, that begins with secrets and lies. Ashton's and Nathan's secrets weren't awful, but it's hard to get ahead of these things once they start, nevermind trying to gain trust. Ashton is a girl who seems to be running from her past. But it's obvious that she's not running from trouble, but more like something she doesn't want to face yet. A friend inadvertently told me what her secret was, but I would have guessed anyway. Nathan's too. I understood where both were coming from, and wanted them to reach for that happy ending.

Because I've read Misunderstandings, I knew Ashton's friends Britni and Tressa. Britni was even more fun in this book, and Tressa was a riot. I'm really looking forward to her upcoming story, Contradictions. I can only imagine what she's going to do or say once she's center stage.

What I found in No Attachments is a story that I've come to expect from author Tiffany King. You get a heroine with a lot of spirit and snark, really good guys, and a love story that doesn't break any new barriers, but is really endearing and heartfelt. I think that's a nice combination.

"Aren't small-town girl supposed to have a higher sense of morals or something?"
"Honey, it's Sunday. Do you see me at any kind of church? Nope. My lack of morals was exposed many years ago. That and the fact that I may or may not have corrupted some of the boys when I was younger may have me on the 'we need to pray for her soul' list at all three churches in town."

"Oh, you're naked," she said, stating the obvious as her eyes darted to my morning companion.
"Yeah, we sort of went to bed that way," I teased, watching as a delicate shade of pink crept up her neck, staining her cheeks. "Does it make you uncomfortable?" I asked.
"What? No, it's just like, you know, 'Ta-Da. Here I am.' It threw me off."

From USA Today bestselling author Catherine Mann comes this beautiful, heartwarming novel about a returning military officer, the daughter of his fallen commander, and a very special dog with a mission. For fans of Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery.

Nestled in the sunny fields of Tennessee lies the McDaniel family’s Second Chance Ranch Animal Rescue. Two new arrivals are on their way, but only one is the four-legged kind.

Staff Sergeant Mike Kowalski wants only one thing after he gets home from Iraq: to sleep in a king-sized bed with clean sheets. But first, he has to hand off his fallen commander’s dog, Trooper, to his family without handing off his heart to Sierra…

Sierra McDaniel needs a break. Her family life is crazy, and when she’s not mucking out kennels, she’s slogging through grad school. Sierra certainly doesn’t want another dog, especially one that reminds her of her father. And she definitely doesn’t want to see Mike with that charming smile of his…

But Trooper has a mission of his own. Before too long Mike is moving to the ranch to lend a hand—and hoping for his own second chance with Sierra.

My Mini-Review

I'm going to be honest, I wasn't the perfect audience for Shelter Me. The reason? So many dogs. I know it's really unpopular, especially since the memes on Facebook like to remind me that if I'm not cool with a creature that's just cleaned his bits lick my face, then I'm not a good human. And I'm okay with that. I don't hate dogs, it's just that whenever I'm around them, I break into hives, get wheezy, itchy, sneezy and extremely grumpy. My point is, since I'm not an avid dog lover, the fact that so much of Shelter Me revolves around a shelter, the many daily details of running a shelter, and that the dog on the cover even narrates a portion of the book, didn't exactly work for me. And I know the book does have a dog on the front, but I didn't pick up the all dogs, all the time vibe from the book description.

That detail aside, the love story between Sienna and Mike was so good. The McDaniel family's struggles with coping with the loss of a husband, father, son, was heartbreaking. The author did such wonderful job of creating a strong sense of the characters' emotions, how they struggled with their loss, and how determined they were to move forward, one day at a time. I liked that the McDaniel family's depression, disappointment, anger, and despair were in focus. To be honest, though I loved the human side of the story, a lot of it was overshadowed by the shelter and the dog. I love a good second chance romance, so much. I truly enjoyed the moments with Mike and Sienna and would have appreciated more of the focus landing on them more, rather than the various secondary plot points.

While I've shared aspects that led to my lack of true enthusiasm in regards to Shelter Me, I do believe it's a nice story. I think those who don't mind an abundance of critters would likely enjoy it a lot.

"Suppose I was trying to win you back to my...mattress, not out of impulsiveness--" he paused, squeezing her hand--"but because we had something good. And even if there isn't a future for us, I can't seem to let go of the past. What would you say to that?"
He couldn't deny how important her answer was to him--too much so.
"I would say I'm swayed." She stepped closer, until her breasts pressed against him, her face tipped up toward his.
He slid an arm around her waist, and she didn't protest or pull away, so he continued, "What if I moved my hand down your back?"
Sierra slid her hand over his shoulder to cup the back of his neck. "I would sigh."

I have two copies (one ARC) of Shelter Me to giveaway. Open to US only; must be 18+ years of age to enter.

A sparkling debut romance where a getaway vacation turns into an unexpected new beginning……

For the last five years, Giselle McCabe’s life has been about sippy cups and playdates. But when her husband suddenly leaves her, Giselle flees to her sister’s California beach house for a two-week getaway. Out of her element, she’s surprised to receive such a warm welcome—especially from gorgeous celebrity athlete Fin Hensen……

Fin is escaping his pro tour for a season, trying to lie low until all the hubbub over a huge mistake in his past blows over. And when he sets his sights on Giselle, he realizes that the beautiful good girl just might be the ticket to his success.

But Giselle never expected romance to enter the picture again—especially with a hot twenty-something from a completely different world. And even though it feels like Fin is everything she’s trying to run away from, she can’t help coming back for more……

My Review

I went into The Red Bikini expected a fun summer romance. What I got was a summer romance that was sexy, transformative and inspiring. For me, The Red Bikini was a great summer romance, but also held strong Women's Fiction elements of life changes and the heroine's personal growth, although our hero Fin undergoes quite a few changes himself.

After a painful marriage that was filled with her husband's infidelities, capped by his abandonment four years prior, Giselle escapes to her sister's home in Sandy Cove, California, with her daughter in tow. Her first encounter is with the oddly charming Rabbit, her sister's neighbor and daughter's new surf instructor. Rabbit introduces Giselle to Fin, a world-renowned pro surfer. With his amazing looks and broody personality, Giselle is attracted to Fin, but assumes someone with bikini-clad women at his disposal would never be interested in someone like her. With the benefit of having Fin's point-of-view as well, we learn that the broody and elusive Fin is also attracted to Giselle, despite knowing he'd be no good for her. This mutual attraction sets The Red Bikini off on course for a romantic, transformative relationship between two people who couldn't seem more wrong, but are so very right for each other.

Fin and Giselle's "relationship" begins as a mutually beneficial partnership. He needs a responsible, safe woman to convince he's sponsors he's a good investment. Giselle needs a sexy man to show her ex she's moved on. They both put the other into a neat little box, labeled with their expectations. But, Fin isn't just the wild, handsome pro surfer. He's someone who's always lived a nomadic life, suddenly finding himself longing for a home. Giselle doesn't want to simply be a safe, responsible woman who bakes cookies and makes school runs. Her husband forced her into a lonely life, and now she wants to be sexy and free, to take chances. The guilt they each face at their initial assumptions and they roles the give each other was a nice touch by the author. I like that she dug deep into Fin and Giselle, and forced me dig as well.
Fin was sexy and mysterious, and it doesn't take long to figure out here's troubled. And troubling. I was initially excited for Fin and Giselle to connect. Then I learned his reasons and I wanted to tell Giselle to keep her distance, to protect her heart. And then I wanted to duck under my covers. There's a power exceeding alluring people have, and as with Spider Man, it comes with great responsibility not to jack other people up just because you're beautiful and you can. What I'm saying is, I was afraid Fin would dick around with Giselle's heart and I was not at all cool with that.

As it turns out Fin's more honorable than nefarious, when it comes to Giselle. After a strained ten-year marriage, Giselle has become a paler shell of her former self. When she meets Fin, she's overwhelmed by him. He's beautiful, young and mysterious. How could a man like him ever want a woman like her? Giselle has a prim appearance, Grace Kelly-esque sophistication and innocence that intrigues Fin. He wants to see her in her prim pajamas, and then he wants to take them off. Fin wants Giselle, not despite her controlled and elegant exterior, but because of it.
Fin and Giselle have so much to work through if they want the happy ever after. Fin must determine whether he wants to continue his solitary life, whether he wants to continue surfing at the professional level, whether he is willing to grab the chance of a life with Giselle. As for Giselle, she's been burned badly. Fin's feelings for her aren't truly in question, but after her painful marriage and divorce she needs someone who wants to be with her, home and with a family. The last part of the book was so difficult because I did want Fin and Giselle together so badly, but how could they bridge the distance. It wasn't easy in the slightest, but it was so worth it.

The more time I've had to consider The Red Bikini, the more I loved it. I loved that I couldn't predict the characters and the story, that I couldn't take for granted how it would end. The author pulled me so thoroughly into Fin and Giselle's story, and I haven't forgotten a moment of it since. The next book in the Sandy Cove series appears to center on Giselle's sister, Lia. I can't wait for more!

Favorite Quotes

  "Fin," she whispered.
"What do you need?" He covered her hand, right there in her lap, then let go quickly and dipped his head to try to meet her downcast eyes. He smelled so good--like intrigue and dubious morality. It sent a delicious shiver down her arms.

She was anxious about missing him. He made her feel accepted in a way she hadn't felt in years--so unlikely, yet there it was. A twenty-eight-year-old pro surfer in California, making her feel she was good enough, smart enough, beautiful enough, and even a good enough mother--when it was all she'd been looking for from everyone she knew all her adult life.

Giselle meant to turn her attention back to Coco, but found herself unable to take her eyes off this newest appearance, captivated by his perfect chest, his square jaw, the rock-shaped shoulders. His body was a gorgeous color--a golden brown, with tinges of smoky red at the tops of his shoulders. Giselle thought it would be perfect to paint. Her second thought was that it would be perfect to photograph. And her third was that it would be wondrous to touch.

Blog Tour: Riding the Wave/The Red Bikini - Top Five Beaches + Giveaway

Welcome to The Red Biking - Riding the Wave Blog Tour! I will start by saying that I have read - and loved- both of these books. Today I have authors Lauren Christopher (The Red Bikini) and Lorelei Brown (Riding the Wave) sharing their Five Favorite Beaches. Enjoy their choices, a few photos, and the tour giveaway. I also have the book details below along with purchase links. Trust me, both are perfect summer reads!

P
Lauren’s 5 Favorite Beaches

Since I grew up in Southern California, my favorite beaches are all here within driving distance. There are about 50 named beaches in Orange County, all known for any number of fun seaside activities. But these are my 5 all-time favorites:
Laguna Beach: There are so many great things about Laguna, I’m not even sure where to start. But when my family goes to the beach, we usually go to Laguna. It’s quirky; it’s weird. It’s got great restaurants, shopping, and one of the coolest record stores ever. The main beach is pretty standard fare (although it has a cool old lifeguard tower there and some awesome volleyball). But there’s romantic Heisler Gazebo up on the hill, natural tidepools below, great art galleries up and down the street, a trolley running up and down Pacific Coast Highway in the summer, and an entire art festival going on in the eucalyptus canyon. I love Laguna so much I put several scenes from there in THE RED BIKINI!
My son on the Laguna Beach trolley

Treasure Island Beach in Laguna Beach: Although technically in Laguna also, I’m calling out Treasure Island specifically because my photog-loving teens and I like coming here to snap great photos. Amazing sunsets. Beautiful foliage. Craftsman style buildings. Teak benches looking out over the ocean. (You can see one on my website at www.laurenchristopherauthor.com) You can take two different sets of stairs down to two surprisingly quiet beaches – one a nice beach strand great for skimboarding, and the other a quiet cove with a tidepool, a blowhole, and cool nooks to lay down a towel and enjoy some unbelievable natural beauty in peace and quiet. Love it here.

The Wedge in Newport Beach: Sometimes in the winter, my youngest son, hubby and I pick up a quick dinner and head down to The Wedge to just sit in the sand and watch some of the best surf theater. Due to the way the jetty comes in at an angle here, and when the swells come up from the Southern Hemisphere just so, The Wedge can see waves of up to 30 feet. You’ll know the days it’s big because the beach is packed with cameras and looky-loos like us, all watching the daredevils take on this craziness. Here’s one of my favorite videos of it.
Take a look for yourself

Huntington Beach: If you’re into surfing, Huntington Beach is a must-stop. The Surfing Walk of Fame is on the corner of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway. The International Surfing Museum is one block north of Main Street. And the U.S. Open of Surfing is held right there, next to the pier, every July. It gets a little overcrowded in the summer, but if you can visit in the winter or spring months, Huntington settles into a more peaceful vibe, and you can enjoy places like “Dog Beach” in Huntington Cliffs, where doggies can run right into the surf, and the bird estuary across the highway, which has great walking and biking trails. And nothing beats roasting marshmallows at night around a fire ring here.
Crystal Cove: Crystal Cove is really made up of a bunch of tiny beaches, but they all form to combine a surprisingly quiet enclave that provides scenic hiking, amazing scuba diving and snorkeling (it’s called an “underwater park”), gorgeous tidepools, and even a romp through history with a small boardwalk of historic cottages. (One is where the movie “Beaches” was filmed.)Wildflowers, cliffs, and steep trails to the beach make this one of the prettiest and most natural places. I feel like this beach is one of Orange County’s best-kept secrets, but we’re all friends here, right? A day here is like a trip back in time.

Lorelie’s 5 Goal Beaches
Like Lauren, I grew up in Southern California too. (My time was almost exclusively spent at Huntington Beach. What can I say, I’m a loyalist.) Due to life circumstances, I now live north of Chicago! Which means I spent almost the entire Arctic Vortex day dreaming about beaches to hit up. So here’s my some-day list…
Bora Bora: I’m going to get one of those thatch-roofed bungalows out on the crystal blue water. How great would that be to be completely surrounded by the ocean? It would lull you to sleep. And in the morning you could dive off from your deck for your morning wakeup. Live in a swimsuit for the whole time you’re there, and never have to put on real pants. Bliss!
Banzai Pipeline, The North Shore, Hawaii: This is all for the view. I wanna see Pipeline going off. Even though I’ll likely be staked out on shore, because I wouldn’t have the slightest clue what to do in a wave that big. It’d break me! But I’d love to see it surfed in person, not just vids.
The Hidden Beach, Mexico: I just recently heard about this one. It’s got this volcano formed half-shell over it, but the sun peeks through. You can only access the sand from the water. You really have to check it out [http://twistedsifter.com/2013/04/hidden-beach-las-marietas-islands-mexico/] to understand the appeal. It looks like…magic. Like mermaids would frolic there.

The Gold Coast, Australia: Mostly because I want to go to Australia. Heh. It’d be way cool.
Now, this last one is sort of a cheat, because it isn’t really a particular beach. More like I wanna go to one of those really fancy, adult resorts. Where there are no kids for miles and a houseboy brings me fruity, boozy drinks on a tray while I lounge at the water’s edge. God, that sounds like heaven!

My Review

Dammit. I love the Play by Play series, and I loved Straddling the Line. This is only the second book in this series I've read, in addition to Burton's Hope series, and I have to say, this was one hot, really heartfelt story.

Once I began reading, the reason Straddling the Line initially won me over was not the obvious. I mean, yeah, the sexy was A-Okay with me, obviously. But what got me truly invested was Haven Briscoe's love for her recently deceased father. After nearly a year, Haven is still mourning the loss of her dad. Haven's dad taught her the love of sports, that love is what bonded them in a lot of ways. Though I still have my dad, he's recently coming through a severe health crisis, and his mortality is often on my mind. Like Haven and her dad, my dad and I always shared a deep love of sports, especially baseball. So many of my childhood memories involved us watching sports together (Go SF Giants!) while he explained the rules and how much he loved to play, and could have done well if he'd lived in a larger town. No matter how strained things were between us at various points, we always had sports. To this day, I randomly find myself spouting off trivial facts about players or games because I absorbed everything we talked about. So this, Haven's memories of her father and that bond they shared, that is what drew me into Straddling the Line.

Besides my personal feelings about the book, this was a damn good story! We have sexy Trevor Shay, a dual threat in that he's a great baseball player and football player (tight end, FTW). Because he also shared a strong bond with Haven's dad that began in college, he wants to help her through her rough time. She comes to stay with Trevor for a story, but this is when they begin to really get to know each other. Trevor didn't have time for Haven in college, but he's certainly making the time now. I like that the relationship begins with an emotional connection, with the two really doing the work to get to know each other.

But oh, that physical connection between Trevor and Haven will not. be. denied, yall! And wow, Trevor Shay can bring on the dirty, filthy, yet somehow sweet talk like a boss. I think I likely speak for a lot of women when I say that the one time in which a bossy, mouthy man is welcome is when getting naked is involved. And let me tell you, in that respect Trevor Shay is a champ. I repeat: dirty, dirty, filthy talk that made me shiver. Nice.

Straddling the Line wasn't all sex and fun, though. There are some serious issues in regards to Trevor, his past and his career. I didn't pick up on the clues throughout, but once the situation was laid out, I was really invested and thought Burton did a great job with this plot point. It was very meaningful and well-detailed.

Straddling the Line has solidified my love for the Play by Play series. Not only am I excited about the books I've read and the future installments, but I really want to make the time to read those I've missed. If you're looking for sexy, fun Sports Romance, give this series a try.

He dropped down beside her, cupping her face in his hands to kiss her.
They rolled over on their backs and stared up at the ceiling.
"Okay, now I might be a little out of breath. But I think my brains also might be leaking out of my ears."
  She laughed. "That good, huh?"
  "Yeah. That good."
She flipped over on her side and rested her head in her hand, content to just look at him. He really was an amazingly beautiful man. If she could go back in time and tell her younger self that she'd be here in bed naked with Trevor Shay, her younger self would laugh at her and tell her there was no way in hell that was ever going to happen, because Trevor was way out of her league.
Yet, here she was. and Trevor seemed...content. Happy.
