A billionaire love story...

Matteo Benenati has spent his life wrapped in wealth and privilege. He is shallow, selfish, jaded—and he likes it that way.

When bold American art student Riley Tremaine crashes into his life, her light forces him to examine the dark places inside of his soul, the ones he thought he’d buried with his father. He knows he should let her go… but he’s never claimed to be a good man.

When Matteo is pitted against his unscrupulous stepsister Emilia Guerra in a bid for his late father’s empire, he must decide between honor and vice. In need of a wife—and desperate to possess her—Matteo makes Riley an offer she can’t refuse. She will be his bride—in every meaning of the word—so that he can protect his legacy.

But Matteo soon learns that Emilia’s soul is darker even than his own. And by marrying Riley, he has made her a pawn in a power struggle that could shatter their world.

This is book one of the A Virgin, A Billionaire and a Marriage series. It is a category length novel that stands alone- no cliffhangers!

My Review

A Bride For a Billionaire read like a bit like an old school category romance. You have a European billionaire with daddy issues, who needs a bride to inherit his fortune.  A fresh, innocent young woman with mommy issues, who really needs the money. And a marriage-of-convenience. A villain in the unhinged step-sister who's out to seduce him out of his fortune and will go to any means necessary to do that. These elements combine to form a twisty, seductive, over-the-top story. Despite that, or maybe because of it, A Bride For a Billionaire was fun. It was exactly as advertised!

I really had to let myself go with this one. I didn't really understand why Mateo found Riley so fascinating, other than she didn't fall at his feet and that her lady garden had never been...tilled? I did like that Riley matched Mateo's aggression, which probably made him even more hot for her, now that I think about it. The villain of the story, Mateo's step-sister Emilia, was especially nasty and bitchy. The lengths she went to in order to win were way over-the-top, and more than a little disturbing, but kind of right for the story. The ending was completely crazy-pants, and I heaven help me, I enjoyed a lot of it.

I never felt a strong connection to the story or characters. But I did enjoy A Bride For a Billionaire for what it was: a sexy, dramatic romp.

Favorite Quotes

"You didn't just want me out of the way," I say slowly, backing further away from Emilia as she tilts her head to the side, examining me as though I'm a bug she'd love to squash beneath her stiletto. "You want him for yourself."
Oh man, that's fucked. I may have hillbilly blood running through my veins, but even people I know don't get it on with their stepsiblings.

Librarian Elizabeth Williams is drinking her cares away at Perdition, a notorious biker bar in her hometown of Hell, TX. She meets Ryker, a member of the Four Horsemen MC and they start a fun, sexual fling. Ryker finds himself falling for Elizabeth, but an outlaw has no business with a “good girl”. Hell, he’s not even sure he’d be worthy of one. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is being stalked by her ex and Carl’s behavior is becoming more and more erratic. Can Ryker protect Elizabeth without losing his heart?

My Review

Ah...Okay. Sweet Perdition. It was crude, rude and raunchy. And I liked it. It was rough and rowdy and wild. And I liked it. It was funny and filthy and oh so dirty. And that was my favorite part.

Sweet Perdition opens in a MC bar, Perdition, located in Hell, Texas. (that's a redundant name if you've ever been to South Texas in July/August) Ryker spies Elizabeth across a crowded bar, drowning her sorrows while wearing a pink bridesmaid dress. Ryker notices fair Elizabeth is a knockout and determines he's gonna tap that before the night is over. So, Ryker joins her, they begin chatting, and he's to be wowed by how much he likes her. As an actual person and not only a penis receptacle! A bet over a game of pool later, Ryker and Elizabeth have really hit it off. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is deciding she's ready for a one-night stand with a hot, aggressive biker. She doesn't care if he wants to pump and dump because she's all about that too, for tonight. So it's game on for Ryker and Elizabeth!

Okay, I know my tone has been a little snarky, but I actually enjoyed Sweet Perdition a lot. I haven't read a lot of erotic romance lately (gasp!) and I love that it was so dirty hot. I think I even blushed a few times, which is a good indication of the dirty. Ryker's all about blowing and going all over the place and Elizabeth is more than happy to be along for the ride, no matter what he had planned. It's a win-win, really. Yeah, I think that was my favorite part of the book. lol

To be honest, I wasn't wild about how Ryker treated the relationship between him and Elizabeth. He was all "I'll do whatever and whomever I want, but no one will ever touch you." which soooo doesn't work for me. I was afraid Elizabeth was going to let that stand, and she is slow to really push him back. I loved that Ryker's mom acted as a sounding board/advisor for Elizabeth on the ways of the club. When Elizabeth finally lays down the law with Ryker, I was half shaking my head and half giving her a fist pump in female solidarity. The fact that characters actually have to put down ultimatums about the expectation of not cheating is sort of hilarious, but again, this is not my world.

On a side note, I loved that the history of the Four Horsemen included a time when the women, led by Ryker's mom, ruled and completely took care of business. I thought that was an excellent touch by the author.

I wish, wish, wish that I could turn my brain off. But I'm a reader who has to believe in the story I'm given. If it's a fantasy, I have to be able to find logic within the world-building. If it's historical, I need to know that the setting, language and actions are true to the time. If it's a contemporary romance, I need to believe in the couple's viability. I hate that this happens, but true MC books almost always test that line with me. I need to believe that the couple has a true connection, and that they can withstand the temptations and strains the MC (namely, the women hanging around) places on them. I do believe Ryker and Elizabeth had a really strong physical connection. I don't necessarily believe they are truly in love by the end of the story - I don't think they even knew each other well enough to establish that, but I do believe they had potential. I'm not sure they would stand the test of time and easy women, but hey, this is Romanceland, and in Romanceland, it's all good.

Sweet Perdition obviously left me conflicted in some ways. I have to just suck that up because I knew exactly what I was getting into by picking up an MC book. Ultimately, I found the story to be funny and wickedly sexy. I would say that fans of the sub-genre will likely enjoy this story. There's good potential for this series, with several interesting characters in line (especially Shepherd!) As for myself, I will definitely continue with book two, Hot as Hades.

She should know better. Librarians and bikers really don't mix! But she'd been out of her mind when she left the wedding, speeding down the road like a maniac, crying.
She should have bypassed Perdition and found a nice, safe Applebee's and ordered a margarita the size of her head, maybe a plate of spinach dip. She could have drowned her sorrows in tequila, carbs, and cheese and gone home with a full belly and a buzz.

"Holy shit. I forgot to ask you what you do. You are seriously a librarian? You aren't fucking with me?"
She made a face. "Yes, I'm really a librarian, MLS degree and all."
"Hot damn." He pictured her behind a desk, dressed all prim and proper; her hair bound up in a little bun, black-framed glasses perched on her nose. "Remind me later to have you dress up and ask me about my overdue books."

Frankly, he'd rather spend the night fucking her seven ways from Sunday, but he bet a girl like her expected a proper date, with a meal and shit. Well, he could play along with that if it kept her in his bed.
She agreed, gave him her address and phone number, and they both finished their food.
Jesus. He'd just planned an honest to God date. Break out the maxi pads. He'd officially become a chick.

"Yes, that's the Horsemen for you. They like liquor, fighting and easy women. Usually in that order."
Elizabeth made a face. "I take it this happens often?"
She shrugged. "Not as much as you'd think. Duke, one of the members just got paroled toady and they wanted to welcome him home in style." She sighed. "Personally, I would bake a cake, but they prefer to express their love with lots of skanky vag."

Readers of Fifty Shades of Grey are sure to love Desired, Stacey Kennedy’s latest seductive, electrifying novel of Club Sin, where fantasy becomes reality.

Kyler Morgan, Master at the legendary Club Sin in Las Vegas, knows how to give women what they want—too well. He hasn’t had a real challenge in a long time. Then Ella Snow enters his life. Beautiful, inhibited, and innocent in the ways of submission and domination, Ella is the new blood he’s been lusting after. Soon, the thrill of training her to embrace his world brings forth desires Kyler cannot control.

After ending an abusive relationship, Ella makes a promise to herself to start living life to the fullest. It’s one of the reasons she seeks out Club Sin. Here, Kyler’s every touch is a lesson in liberation, stirring passions that have no bounds. But as she falls under Kyler’s command, Ella discovers that some secrets are so dark they must come to light. Submission alone may not be enough to save her, leaving her Master with only one question: How can he help Ella heal while unlocking the deep pleasures she craves?

Desired is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.

My Review

Desired was so, so good, maybe even my favorite of the Club Sin series. I've liked Kyler Morgan since meeting him in Claimed and have been anxious to see him find the submissive of his dreams. It doesn't take long in Desired, because he and Ella Snow connect across a crowded wedding reception (one of the other couples gets married, yay!) Kyler, being the fantastic Dom he is, not only connects with Ella, but also recognizes the submissive in her. After a passionate night, he wants to begin a relationship. Ella is wary, and evasive, about her reasons to keep the relationship casual. Kyler begins the sweet, sensitive and romantic undertaking at getting Ella to open up to him, share her secrets. Ella wants more with Kyler, if she can leave the past behind. She's also open to joining Kyler in his lifestyle, as his submissive.

Kyler and Ella were great romantic leads. I truly liked them both as characters, enjoyed watching them begin this slow, sexy dance towards a life-changing love. Ella's past relationship plays into their present, and I admired both how the author dealt without this throughout the story. It gave good motivation for Ella's reluctance and helped eventually bring them together as a stronger couple. I also liked how Kyler approached Ella about joining Club Sin, and Ella's reaction and her curiosity and thoughtfulness moving forward. And damn, everything about the sexual relationship between these two-in and out of the club-was so, so sexy!

We also get a lot of Dmitri and Presley (Claimed) and a nice bit of Aidan and Cora (Bared). It's always appreciated when past couples are brought forward with the series.

I like to describe the Club Sin series as BDSM-lite, not because I don't take it seriously in that aspect, but because it is so easily-accessible to those who are wary of BDSM or erotic romance. Yes, the lifestyle does play a strong part in the plot, but they're essentially character-driven stories about people who are connected by the community. We don't have men who are out to convince or their lady into joining, though they do encourage her to explore. In the first two books, the heroines are there of their own volition, with or without the hero. The play is more focused on the pleasure or pleasure-pain aspects of BDSM, not the parts (blood play, humiliation, etc) that can seem scary to many of us. If you're looking to explore erotic romance with a BDSM slant, I would definitely encourage you to give the Club Sin series a try.

Favorite Quotes

Though Kyler liked the thought of bringing Ella to Club Sin, he didn't know how to broach the subject with her. So, I like to fuck in public, engage in kinky sex play, and demand submission--whatcha think?

A gazillion questions hung on the tip of her tongue. She also wasn't about to ask any of them with two people around her she didn't know. Don't look two inexperienced, Ella. She finally looked from Kyler to Porter to Kenzie, who all watched her. What does one say in this incredibly awkward moment? So, you come here to fuck?

  "You're not alone anymore, Ella."
Sobbing tears rushed along her face, tears she didn't try to control. So long she had felt alone. So long she had fought against the world that seemed to be fighting against her. Now it seemed like life had finally given her a second chance. And this man was the reason behind it. A man who gave her everything without ever asking for something in return. A man who had simply been there for her, every step of the way. "I'm no longer alone?"
Warmness softened his eyes, making her glow from the inside out, as he slowly shook his head. "This life. This family. Club Sin. It's all yours." Brushing the tears off her cheeks, he added with a tender voice, "Do you understand that, Ella? My life, it belongs to you now."

Hawaiian Vacation To-Do List:

1. Bikini up! You're in Oahu, and it's time for fruit drinks with umbrellas in them!
2. Being obsessively organized doesn't work during a Hawaiian vacation. Relax. Seriously.
3. Scan the resort for hot dudes. Huh. That hot jogger who ran by looks a lot like your ex, Jeremy—only fitter, harder and sexier.
4. Moonlit walks mean bumping into Hot Jogger Guy. Who is your ex.
5. Don't panic. Instead, think with your libido! Also debate the merits of ex sex.
6. Ignore the consequences. Go for it.
7. Revel in the afterglow. Go for rounds two and three.
8. Ooh, kayaking!
9. Round four. Oops!
10. Definitely do not think about why you broke up in the first place. Or that you're having wicked-hot nookie with the man you were here to forget…

My Review

I wanted to pick up Sex on the Beach because I like the Red Hot Reads line and I like Dryden's novellas. I'm glad I went with my gut on this, because this one was another win for me in both categories.

As indicated in the book description, Sex on the Beach is a vacation story and a second chance romance. Jeremy and Amanda broke up ten months prior when he moved for his job and she refused to follow. Both have been moving forward with their lives, but miserable without the other. When Amanda heads to Hawaii with a couple of friends, Jeremy takes the opportunity to follow her and win her back.

And that's where Sex on the Beach gets fun. We have this couple who are most definitely still in love, but have issues to work through if they can make another go of it. I like that Dryden doesn't smooth the issues over with sex, but makes it a real part of the discussion and gives it a realistic "non-resolved" resolution. I had to giggle over Amanda and Jeremy's inability to shut down the attraction between them, and that neither deny it. This leaves us with a story that had the deep discussions interspersed with clothes-ripping passion. My favorite kind!

I can't give any real detractions to Sex on the Beach, except possibly feeling a little lost in the beginning. That's my fault though, since I didn't pick up Mai Tai For Two (about Amanda's vacation mates) first.

Sex on the Beach was a fast and sexy little read that left me satisfied and smiling. Perfect if you're looking for a quick and dirty, yet sweet beach romance.

"I didn't tell you I was coming because I knew you wouldn't agree to it. I've spent the last year accomplishing even more than I thought I could, but it's all kind of meaningless because all I do is think about how I want to share it with you. I still love you, I still want to be with you. We are both really smart, and I know we can figure this out if we try. Please just give me these few days to try. And that is what I came here to say."

"I'm not sure what it will accomplish, having that talk again. Seems like it's going to end up in the same exact place it did all the other times."
Jeremy pursed his lips, clearly contemplating the wisdom of his response before going for it. "In hot, angry doggy style on your living room floor?"
"That was one time.: She felt the blush creeping over her face. Her first instinct had been to grab him and head for the floor to demonstrate, so it felt like she'd been caught in illicit lusting. "And maybe that one other time."

Sexy Saturdays: Ride With Me/About Last Night by Ruthie Knox

Ride with MeSeries: Standalone
Genre: Contemp Romance
Publisher: Loveswept
Publication Date: 2/13/13
Format: ebook
Pages: 216
Source: Purchase
Rating: 4 stars

In this fun, scorching-hot eBook original romance by Ruthie Knox, a cross-country bike adventure takes a detour into unexplored passion. As readers will discover, Ride with Me is not about the bike!

When Lexie Marshall places an ad for a cycling companion, she hopes to find someone friendly and fun to cross the TransAmerica Trail with. Instead, she gets Tom Geiger—a lean, sexy loner whose bad attitude threatens to spoil the adventure she’s spent years planning.

Roped into the cycling equivalent of a blind date by his sister, Tom doesn’t want to ride with a chatty, go-by-the-map kind of woman, and he certainly doesn’t want to want her. Too bad the sight of Lexie with a bike between her thighs really turns his crank.   Even Tom’s stubborn determination to keep Lexie at a distance can’t stop a kiss from leading to endless nights of hotter-than-hot sex. But when the wild ride ends, where will they go next?

My Review

I've recently taken a big liking to books from Ruthie Knox, so when I saw Let It Ride, I had to give it a try. I'm not particularly into cycling. My own bike has who-knows-how-many gears/speeds and hasn't moved in over two years. But I'm always looking out for something new, and book about two strangers on a cross-country cycling trip sounded all kinds of cool and interesting.

I was fully prepared to like Tom despite the cycling gear. To be honest, I've never noticed a cyclist and thought "Hey! He's hot." Compression shorts do nothing for me. But to Alex's dismay, and my utter delight, it seems that Tom sets out wearing a faded Nirvana t-shirt and cargo shorts. That sound you just heard was my lady-bells ringing. Guys, I love a guy in a good tee and cargoes. But then...Tom started speaking, and dude, that man was a little hostile. Nice. As anyone who knows my husband can vouch for, I love a cranky man. Tom Geiger, he was a solitary man with a difficult past. Over the past five years, he's completely transformed his life, going from a high-powered job to working in a bike shop, from a socially active life to solitude. I mean, the guy has pretty much modeled his new life after Thoreau's "Walden", with epic cycling trips his only true indulgence.

So Tom is tricked into riding cross-country with Alex "Lexie" Marshall, and he isn't a bit happy about that. Lexie isn't exactly thrilled to be riding with Grumpy Tom, but, she's out of options. Le xie and Tom are opposites: she's chatty, curious, excited, and she is way too organized for Tom's liking. She's outfitted with a ridiculously complicated bike complete with a computer, maps, a trailer...she's so ready for this trip. But what Tom realizes and Lexi does not, is that she needs to get rid of the gear and just enjoy the beautiful ride.

Oh! Another issue that drives Tom crazy? He's wildly attracted to Lexie. He has no need for that sort of nonsense in his life, though, and vows to keep his hands off. The only problem is, her ass looks so nice when she's riding in front of him, she looks hot with a bike between her thighs, he can't help but admire the freckles on her shoulder, etc. Yep, he's got it bad.And so does Lexie. Did I mention Tom is hot? He is, with dark good looks, broad shoulders, muscular thighs, and enticing scent. You see where this is going, don't you? Tom and Lexi want each other, so badly. But neither wants to want the other. They have specific plans that don't include falling in love on the TransAmerica Trail. Which means, they absolutely fall in love on the TransAmerica Trail, one hill, one town, one longing glance at a time.

Let It Ride was sexy, it was interesting, it was meaningful and it made me smile. Another winner from Ruthie Knox.

Favorite Quotes

  "I don't need a babysitter."
"Please, Tom. You can't ride your bicycle across the country alone. It's insane. You'll end up being slaughtered by a serial killer."
"Taryn, I'm thiry-five, single, tattooed, and antisocial.
I'm the serial killer.”

  He was everything she wanted.
For a long moment he just held her there, his tattooed biceps rigid with the strain of bearing his own weight, his breath on her neck, his heat pulsing deep inside her, his heart beating so hard she could feel it pounding against her own.
She tipped her hips up, inviting him deeper, and he groaned helplessly. "God, Lex. Tell me this is really okay."
  "It's better than okay."
"You're mine." He said it like an oath, both a curse and a promise.
She liked the sound of that.

Lying here naked beside Tom, watching the weather arrive, it was hard to remember Portland or to formulate an acceptable explanation for why she wasn't married and living an entirely different life. She wasn't doing that because she'd wanted to be here, doing this. She'd wanted Tom before she'd even met him.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Sure, opposites attract, but in this sexy, smart, eBook original romance from RITA finalist and bestselling author Ruthie Knox, they positively combust! When a buttoned-up banker falls for a bad girl, “about last night” is just the beginning.

Cath Talarico knows a mistake when she makes it, and God knows she’s made her share. So many, in fact, that this Chicago girl knows London is her last, best shot at starting over. But bad habits are hard to break, and soon Cath finds herself back where she has vowed never to go . . . in the bed of a man who is all kinds of wrong: too rich, too classy, too uptight for a free-spirited troublemaker like her.

Nev Chamberlain feels trapped and miserable in his family’s banking empire. But beneath his pinstripes is an artist and bohemian struggling to break free and lose control. Mary Catherine—even her name turns him on—with her tattoos, her secrets, and her gamine, sex-starved body, unleashes all kinds of fantasies.

When blue blood mixes with bad blood, can a couple that is definitely wrong for each other ever be perfectly right? And with a little luck and a lot of love, can they make last night last a lifetime?

My Review

I went into About Last Night with expectations of a fun one-night stand turned true love story. Since it's a Ruthie Knox book, I also knew that buried beneath the sexy cover and fun premise, I would get a truly meaningful story that would grip me. I was right about that. Not only did About Last Night grip me, it  kicked me straight in the heart. I will  keep my personal reflection on the story to a minimum, but let me just say that, like Ashley from Roman Holiday, About Last Night's heroine spoke to me on a deeply personal level.

The story begins with Cath, an American living in London. Though she has a job she loves, Cath remains detached. You soon learn it's for her own good. Cath hasn't always been responsible, hard-working. She used to be "Old Cath", and that version of her was deeply troubled. When Cath connects with a man she knows from the train, a sexy man she nicknames "City" (his real name is Nev), Cath knows she's going down the wrong path again, headed for a mistake. But Nev, he refuses to let Cath walk away. He wants to know her, love her. Nev is in for quite the battle.

Much of About Last Night deals with Nev's persistence and Cath's reluctance for a relationship. As stubborn as she is, he matches her step-for-step. It's a one-step-forward, two-steps-back sort of dance between these two. I confess, it normally drives me a bit bananas when a character decides to leave the person they love or shut them out "for their own good". Cath is afraid her penchant for destroying her life will crash down on Nev, and that he'll break her heart. She's partially right, in that her former life could be overwhelming, but we know that Nev is a big boy, and if you love someone, give them the knowledge and a choice, and allow that person to decide whether you're worth the risk. This is her choice, whether to take the risk and let Nev break her heart, as she believes he will

But honestly, I can also see why Cath is so private and protective of herself. I know that Nev loves her and would never hurt her, but she doesn't. Sometimes our own awful, stupid mistakes build and build and build until that's all we can see, it becomes ingrained into our identity. Until you let someone in, tell that person your big bad secrets. If that person truly loves you, they'll accept it as part of your history, what led you to where you are and exactly who you need to be. And then, that person can show you who they see you as, not flawless, but strong, a survivor.

"Your past--It's not a series of mistakes, love. It's just you. All the things that happened to you that made you who you are. You asked me if I hated you for what you've done and what you've been through, but I never could. I admire you. I love you. And I wouldn't change any of it, even the worst parts, because I wouldn't change a thing about you."

And Nev, what a dream book guy! So kind, so sexy, so funny and smirky. I love how much he loved Cath, just as she was. And let me say, that man can make a grand gesture. Truly stunning.

I know this review has been all over the place and a real angst-fest. But I must point out that About Last Night was really funny and sexy too. I love the humor and realism when it comes to sex Knox always incorporates into her stories. I don't need to be sold the fantasy when I have this level of honesty and beauty.

About Last Night. A bad girl and a buttoned-up banker. Blue blood and bad blood. This book was practically written for the bad girl who still lives somewhere inside of me. That girl with good intentions and bad decisions who never thought she would not only win the heart of the good guy, but that through his eyes, she could see that maybe she hadn't made a disaster of things after all. It's not about being changed about a person, but about seeing yourself through new eyes, a new, love-filled perspective. It's very healing and very endearing. I just, I loved this story so much and highly recommend it.

  "No," he replied. "I'm not."

He was claiming her, marking her with his touch, but she didn’t feel possessed so much as she felt protected. Cherished. Wanted.   He saw her. He saw her, and then he smiled the way he'd always smiled at her, as if they were the only two people in the room, and he loved her, and he'd very much life to find out what she had on under her dress. My Review

Dammit. I love the Play by Play series, and I loved Straddling the Line. This is only the second book in this series I've read, in addition to Burton's Hope series, and I have to say, this was one hot, really heartfelt story.

Once I began reading, the reason Straddling the Line initially won me over was not the obvious. I mean, yeah, the sexy was A-Okay with me, obviously. But what got me truly invested was Haven Briscoe's love for her recently deceased father. After nearly a year, Haven is still mourning the loss of her dad. Haven's dad taught her the love of sports, that love is what bonded them in a lot of ways. Though I still have my dad, he's recently coming through a severe health crisis, and his mortality is often on my mind. Like Haven and her dad, my dad and I always shared a deep love of sports, especially baseball. So many of my childhood memories involved us watching sports together (Go SF Giants!) while he explained the rules and how much he loved to play, and could have done well if he'd lived in a larger town. No matter how strained things were between us at various points, we always had sports. To this day, I randomly find myself spouting off trivial facts about players or games because I absorbed everything we talked about. So this, Haven's memories of her father and that bond they shared, that is what drew me into Straddling the Line.

Besides my personal feelings about the book, this was a damn good story! We have sexy Trevor Shay, a dual threat in that he's a great baseball player and football player (tight end, FTW). Because he also shared a strong bond with Haven's dad that began in college, he wants to help her through her rough time. She comes to stay with Trevor for a story, but this is when they begin to really get to know each other. Trevor didn't have time for Haven in college, but he's certainly making the time now. I like that the relationship begins with an emotional connection, with the two really doing the work to get to know each other.

But oh, that physical connection between Trevor and Haven will not. be. denied, yall! And wow, Trevor Shay can bring on the dirty, filthy, yet somehow sweet talk like a boss. I think I likely speak for a lot of women when I say that the one time in which a bossy, mouthy man is welcome is when getting naked is involved. And let me tell you, in that respect Trevor Shay is a champ. I repeat: dirty, dirty, filthy talk that made me shiver. Nice.

Straddling the Line wasn't all sex and fun, though. There are some serious issues in regards to Trevor, his past and his career. I didn't pick up on the clues throughout, but once the situation was laid out, I was really invested and thought Burton did a great job with this plot point. It was very meaningful and well-detailed.

Straddling the Line has solidified my love for the Play by Play series. Not only am I excited about the books I've read and the future installments, but I really want to make the time to read those I've missed. If you're looking for sexy, fun Sports Romance, give this series a try.

He dropped down beside her, cupping her face in his hands to kiss her.
They rolled over on their backs and stared up at the ceiling.
"Okay, now I might be a little out of breath. But I think my brains also might be leaking out of my ears."
  She laughed. "That good, huh?"
  "Yeah. That good."
She flipped over on her side and rested her head in her hand, content to just look at him. He really was an amazingly beautiful man. If she could go back in time and tell her younger self that she'd be here in bed naked with Trevor Shay, her younger self would laugh at her and tell her there was no way in hell that was ever going to happen, because Trevor was way out of her league.
Yet, here she was. and Trevor seemed...content. Happy.

My Review

Ah, okay. I was not a big fan of Substitute. It wasn't that I actively disliked the story or the writing, in fact, I felt compelled to keep going to the very end. It's just, I could not get behind the love story, a lot of the heroine's actions, all the WTF-ery, and the nonsense that was the workplace.

Let me briefly explain.

Alexia has finally found the courage to run away from her brutish boyfriend. Her old friend sets up her up with a place to live and work at the same sports agency. Now, you would think this place was ran by Joe Francis because it might as well be called Employees Gone Wild. These people don't work to hard at being good agents, as far as I can tell, they're too busy going at it on any non-moving surface they land on. When she witnesses two fellow employees going at it at an office party, Alexia's sexuality comes roaring to the forefront. And by roaring, I mean gushing. It seems our girl Alexia is a random squirter/gusher/flooder/leaker/etc. Poor girl, she can't get within ten feet of a virile man without springing a leak downtown. It's so bad that she has to worry about leaving damp areas on her clothes or anything she's sitting on. I mean, give the girl a wet floor sign and a squeegee, please. And as if that wasn't bad enough, I think Alexia has a bad case of idle hands. Every time the thought of sex comes remotely near her mind, she's got her hand down her knickers faster than you can say "masturbation makes you deaf". It doesn't matter where she is or who's around, when Alexia decides to rub one off, it's all hands down below.

So, cool. Alexia is in charge of her sexual agency. I can get down with that. But I just don't understand why I'm supposed to believe she is desperately in love with her boss Nathan when she's nearly boning (not having sex, though) every guy she knows. And to be clear: I don't care if she's getting busy with other guys. In fact, go for it girl! My issues is with the fact I'm supposed to buy that she is in love with desperately in love with Nathan. And these poor guys...apparently no man is immune to Alexia's ethereal, icy beauty because they're all springing boners every time they're graced with her presence. And I do mean every. single. time.

You have Tony, fellow employee whom she caught doing his superior. Tony figures out Alexia is a watcher and he's constantly forcing her to watch with him. While he sticks his hands up her skirt and rubs himself on her. This dude was slightly rapey, y'all. I say slightly because she never told him no and actually seemed to enjoy herself, but man, he was one of those sleezy guys that just know you want it so bad. And then you have Richard, who was actually a nice guy. He knew her all of about fifteen minutes before he tried to mount Alexia. Once he figured out she was hot for boss, Richard put it upon himself to teach Alexia about her sexuality, be it getting her off or teaching her how to get him off. But still, he was probably the nicest guy of the bunch. And then we have Nathan, the boss man Alexia is so in love with. Surprisingly, he's the guy she is the least physical with. Nathan is a nice boss, but aloof. It's clear he's attracted to Alexia, but his "secret pain" keeps him closed off. As does continually finding her in compromising positions with Tony.

Every one knows Alexia and Nathan belong together. She does, her best friend does, a colleague does, all despite the two sharing very little page time. Combining that with her extra-curricular activities with Tony and Richard, I'm not sure exactly why I was supposed to believe they were destined to end up together. I tried very hard to turn my brain off and enjoy it for a salacious erotic story, but I don't know... I just didn't feel it.

So, that wasn't actually brief at all. Huh. I didn't plan to go on and on about Substitute, but I did have a lot to say. My poor husband is probably glad I decided to put it all into my review because I spent a good part of his lunch filling him in on all the squishy details. I didn't hate the Substitute. I didn't even strongly dislike it. I just didn't get it. Or maybe I got it to some extent, but I couldn't get behind it. And now I'm confusing myself. I will say I was entertained.

Substitute didn't fully work for me, but if you're willing to give a steamy, crazy story a try, it may work for you.
