DREAM MAN WEEK: LAW MAN (DREAM MAN #3) by KRISTEN ASHLEY

I fell in love with Kristen Ashley's writing with the Rock Chick series. Since then, I've decide to devote a week/month to each of her series. August was Rock Chick. September was Colorado Mountain. October is Dream Man.

Law Man (Dream Man, #3)Series: Dream Man #3
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Suspense
Publisher: Forever
Publication Date: SP 2/3/12, now w/Forever 12/11/12
Format: Kindle
Pages: 362
Source: Purchase
Rating: 4-4.5 stars

Love is just around the corner . . . Sweet, shy Mara Hanover is in love with her neighbor. For four years, she has secretly watched her dream man from afar. Handsome police detective Mitch Lawson is way out of her league. She's a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, and there's no way a guy like Mitch would want anything to do with her. But when Mara has a leaky faucet that she can't fix, it's Mitch who comes to her rescue.

Mitch has been eyeing his beautiful neighbor for a long time. He jumps at the chance to help her, and soon their formerly platonic relationship gets very hot and heavy. But when Mara gets a disturbing phone call from her cousin's kids, she gets pulled back into the life she's tried so hard to leave behind. Can the hot law man convince Mara to let go of her past-and build a future with him?

Mitch Lawson is the sexy detective I've been wanting more of since Mystery Man. He's got it all, really. Great cop name. Gorgeous. And the signature KA Alpha Man characteristics: bossy, sexy, smart, with a dangerous edge. Seriously,  what's not to love

When I started reading Law Man, I got a lot of comments from those who'd already read it. The consensus was: Mitch Lawson is a BAMF, but Mara is seriously annoying. This didn't worry me because I tend to find a lot of myself in the KA heroines a lot of readers find annoying (think Jet and Ava). And now that I think about it, I'm not sure what that says about me. But when I say annoying, I mean, these heroines tend to lack an abundance of confidence. Sure, she may be sweet and smart and have friends, but when it comes to a great, hot guy falling in love with her, she thinks "Why me?" and "How long until he realizes he's too good for me?" Mara did take this a bit to the extreme, but once she settled in, it got better.

I really liked Law Man. I didn't quite love it like the first two books in the series, particularly Wild Man. This may be because I loved Wild Man so much, it's a favorite of Ashley 's for me. I really liked that this one focused so much on family, with Mitch and Mara's love for her two young cousins. The moments of love and affection between the four never failed to bring a tear to my eyes.

Happily, Law Man did include a fair amount of crossover from other KA books. Elvira is always good for a laugh. Brock, along with Tessa, made me swoon a few times. Hawk brought the heat. We also got the Hot Bunch (LUKE STARK!) And Tack. I had sort of forgotten how hot and mysterious he was in Mystery Man. I've been thoroughly reminded, and now am pumped to start Motorcycle Man.

Favorite Quotes:

"He was the man of my dreams. I was in love with him and I didn't know him and he definitely didn't know me. This was not in a sick stalker-type way because I was too shy to be a stalker and I liked him too much to put him through something like that."  ~1%

"Never believed in this shit but now, I'm thinkin' I fell in love with the promise of you the first time I saw you."   ~75%

"That's me," Tack answered. "Full of surprises. Now, you gonna give Lawson his assurances and make your call or are we gonna get out our knitting needles and chat while we make scarves?"   ~95%

DREAM MAN WEEK: WILD MAN (DREAM MAN #2) by KRISTEN ASHLEY

I fell in love with Kristen Ashley's writing with the Rock Chick series. Since then, I've decide to devote a week/month to each of her series. August was Rock Chick. September was Colorado Mountain. October is Dream Man.

She's about to walk on the wild side . . . While filling the display case in her bakery, the bell over the door sounds and Tessa O'Hara looks up to see the man of her dreams. Within thirty seconds he asks her out for a beer. But after four months of dating, she discovers he's an undercover DEA agent-and he's investigating her possible role in her ex-husband's drug business. For Tess, this means their relationship is over.

Brock disagrees. He's committed to his anti-drug mission, but he's fallen in love with the beautiful woman who's as sweet as her cupcakes-and he'll do anything to win her back. Standing between Tess and Brock are their own exes, one of them a drug lord who's determined to get what he wants. Now as danger threatens, can Brock break the rules he's lived by and let loose his wild side to protect the woman he loves?

Okay. So Wild Man is the FIFTEENTH Kristen Ashley book I've read since late-June, and my love for her style is not diminishing in the slightest. Honestly, I can't even begin to comprehend how one mind can continue to create so many engaging and dynamic characters. Such fun, sexy, realistic and suspenseful stories filled with heart-stopping moments of beauty, with each story having a unique feel. My mind is boggled, but KA does it, so there you have it.

I am always grateful for a good story that takes me away from reality, but I've been especially grateful right now, because I read Wild Man during the first week of the government shutdown. (Side note:  It's been a very stressful time, considering my husband works for the federal government, and has no idea when he will again be paid for his work.)  I'm not telling this for any other reason than to say, you know you have something special when you can be consumed by a story even when you are stressed to the max. Also, I am pleased to say that I have no read so many KA books that I can now go off an a tangent that would make any of her heroines - particularly Nina Maxwell - proud. I now find myself talking like these chicks and that had me pretty freaking pleased. Bonus: My Guy thinks it's cute.

So back to Wild Man. I obviously loved it, even more than Mystery Man! Brock and Tessa got off to a troubled start, but once they get going, their relationship was terrific. These two were such a... healthy (?) couple. Maybe it's that they were a bit older than a lot of KA's other couples, or perhaps it was just them as characters, but whatever it was, I liked it. Once they got their initial issues sorted, their struggles were mostly external, dealing with exes, families, friends. Brock and Tessa reminded me a lot of Tate and Laurie (from Sweet Dreams). Considering that Tate and Laurie are one of my very favorite couples (along with Luke and Ava), then you know why this is a compliment.

Something I'm really enjoying about Dream Man series is how each story, despite being a companion, is connected to the others. I loved seeing Hawk and Gwen again. I like the tidbits with Mitch, who gets the next book, and Tack. Not only do you get that, but also...this series continues to tie into the Rock Chick world in the best of ways! I almost had a heart attack when the boys from Nightingale Investigation show up, along with Hank and Eddie. And...SHIRLEEN AND DAISY. (If you know Shirleen and Daisy then you recognize my CAP SMASH is warranted.)  I have officially died and gone to KA Heaven.

Every time I try to write a review for a Kristen Ashley book, I feel like I'm going to lock up. I just don't see how I can adequately describe them to the uninitiated. My best friend has asked me about them, and all I can do is gush, blush, bounce, then throw my hands up in the air and shrug. These are books better left to experience.

I can't wait to experience book three, Law Man.

Favorite Quotes:

Being with Jake was like the ride I once took on a mechanical bull. You could not even begin to guess which way that thing would buck. All you could do was hold on as tight as you could and enjoy the ride for as long as you had it.

“There's a wild that's fucked and there's a wild that's just, plain wild. You just hooked yourself to a different kind of wild, Tess, and I swear, baby, swear," his arms squeezed before he finished, "I'll show you that's a good, safe place to be.”

“He thinks I'm beautiful and told me so. He thinks I'm funny because I make him laugh all the time. He's fantastic in bed and when I say that not once, not even once have we been together where he's not taken care of me and it's not unheard of he takes care of me twice in one go.”

“I don't get my tees at a mall, Tess. No decent tee can be bought at a fuckin' mall. A good tee is bought during an experience.”

"Babe, he took your power. Tonight...you took it back. And it..." His arm gave me a squeeze, "was," his hand gave me a squeeze, "fuckin'," his forehead dropped to rest on mine, "beautiful." I closed my eyes and pulled in a deep breath. Then I opened them and said, "You had my back." "I always have your back."

BOOK SPOTLIGHT AND SALE: THE DARKEST PART by TRISHA WOLFE

I am a big fan of the lovely Trisha Wolfe, and am happy to help spread the word about her latest book, The Darkest Part,  on sale right now. Check it out.

Pressing the boundaries of both the psyche and the heart, Sam and Holden embark on a dangerous journey that will test the limits of love.

Sam Wintry’s life used to be almost perfect. She was engaged to her childhood best friend and high school sweetheart, Tyler Marks, planning an amazing cross-country honeymoon during her college break. But after a hit-and-run leaves her in ruin, she begins seeing Tyler’s fractured, ghostly presence, and her family believes she’s losing her mind. Not until she completes their journey, stopping along the way to scatter Tyler's remains, will Tyler be able cross over. Only...is Sam ready for him to leave her?

When the black sheep of the Marks' family, Holden Marks, returns to check on Tyler's case, Sam convinces him to give her his brother's ashes. Despite their shaky history, she needs him...plus, he owes it to Sam and his brother. What she doesn’t count on is Holden’s relentlessness to go on the trip.

On the road, Holden realizes just how unhinged Sam has become. Dealing with her psychosis forces him to confront his dark past, making it harder to keep secrets hidden that should remain buried. Especially from Sam, the only woman he’s ever loved. And as Sam starts to unravel the truth, she begins to question if the brother she's unwillingly falling for again is in an even darker place than her.

New Adult Contemporary coming this year.

He thought there would never be anything harder than losing his brother. Turns out there is: falling in love with his brother’s widow, Raine.

Ever since they were little, Jesse was the Edwards brother who was always there for her, and Jake was the one who knew just how to push her buttons. PARTING IS SUCH SWEET SORROW: THE DAYLIGHTERS BLOG TOUR by RACHEL CAINE

Coming 11/29

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow: The Daylighters Blog Tour
Rachel Caine says goodbye to Morganville

Master storyteller Rachel Caine has her hands full with her bestselling Morganville Vampires novels coming to an end, and a brand new book (a retelling of Romeo and Juliet titled Prince of Shadows) on the way. But with speculation about Daylighters (Nov. 5, 2013), the series finale, at an all time high, she just couldn’t resist dropping some hints. She’ll be stopping by to answer your questions in the comments below, but she can neither confirm nor deny what’s true and what’s not!
Ask away!

Daylighters (The Morganville Vampires, #15)Series: Morganville Vampires #15
Publisher: NAL
Publication Date: 11/5/13

While Morganville, Texas, is often a troubled town, Claire Danvers and her friends are looking forward to coming home. But the Morganville they return to isn’t the one they know; it’s become a different place—a deadly one… Something drastic has happened in Morganville while Claire and her friends were away. The town looks cleaner and happier than they’ve ever seen it before, but when their incoming group is arrested and separated—vampires from humans—they realize that the changes definitely aren’t for the better.

It seems that an organization called the Daylight Foundation has offered the population of Morganville something they’ve never had: hope of a vampire-free future. And while it sounds like salvation—even for the vampires themselves—the truth is far more sinister and deadly.

Now, Claire, Shane and Eve need to find a way to break their friends out of Daylighter custody, before the vampires of Morganville meet their untimely end…

Rumor #5: Morganville is wiped off the map.

From Daylighters:

Claire turned to Miranda, and said, “Do you think you’re strong enough now to go out again?”
Miranda nodded eagerly – so eagerly she was almost bouncing in place. “What do you want me to do?”

“I need you to do a little spy work for us,” Claire said. “Since you’re so good at being invisible. The Daylight Foundation seems to be behind all of this urban renewal we’ve got, so they’d be the ones to make a plan for demolition, too, wouldn’t they?”

Prince of ShadowsPublisher: NAL
Publication Date: 2/4/14

A standalone built around the character of Benvolio, from Romeo and Juliet. The novel will be told from the point of view of Benvolio, who is Romeo’s cousin and, in Shakespeare’s play, attempts to get the lovelorn Montague interested in other girls after it’s discovered that Juliet is a member of the clan his family despises: the Capulets. Caine’s novel, her agent said, explores a scenario in which Romeo and Juliet are not the only couple to fall into dire romantic straits and is “a tale of intrigue, betrayal, hatred, and tragedy,” about “lovers lost, and lovers found.” (From Publisher's Weekly)

DREAM MAN WEEK: MYSTERY MAN (DREAM MAN #1) by KRISTEN ASHLEY

Night time is the right time...

Gwendolyn Kidd has met the man of her dreams. He's hot, he's sexy, and what started as a no-names-exchanged night of passion has blossomed into a year and a half-long pleasure fest. Sure, it's a little strange that he only appears in her bed at night, but Gwen is so sure he's the one, she just can't turn him away...

Hawk Delgado knows more about Gwen than she could ever imagine. She's gorgeous, headstrong, and skittish about relationships. But Hawk is facing his own demons, demons that keep him from connecting with anyone. Yet when Gwen is drawn into Denver's lethal underground scene, Hawk's protective nature comes out full force. The problem is, when Gwen gets a dose of Hawk's Alpha attitude in the daylight, she's not so sure he's the one anymore....

You might not believe me, but I was very hesitant about Mystery Man. I don't really go for stories in which a woman lets an unseen man into her bed. Let alone time after time. I could never repeatedly get it on with a dude I'm not quite sure about. It may make me shallow, but I have to see what's on or around me (or in me, as it were). Luckily, my book crisis was averted, because although this mystery man does visit Gwen Kidd in the dark, she did actually meet him in a bar, and rest assured, Cabe "Hawk" Delgado is H-O-T.

But who was I really kidding. All of Kristen Ashley's men are ridiculously hot, mysterious, and sexy. There also the strong and silent type and Hawk was no exception. He's also a law-dancing commando of the Lee Nightingale variety, which makes him a particularly swoon-worthy badass, in my opinion.

I loved the mysterious and sexy nature of Gwen and Hawk's relationship. And how rapidly it changed when Gwen inadvertently finds herself in serious danger. In this series, much like the Rock Chick and Colorado Mountain series, you have a sweet and fun heroine, a dark and mysterious badass Alpha Male who makes it his life mission to protect his woman, and crazy dangerous scenarios that have you gasping one moment and laughing the next.

Mystery Man has a wicked cool cameo....THE HOT BUNCH. Anyone who's followed my love for all things Rock Chick know that I am all about the men of Nightingale Investigations. When I unexpectedly get the treat of Lee Nightingale and LUKE STARK? Let's just say my Happy Meter went through the roof.

Mystery Man was fabulous. Although I was a little hesitant about the premise for the relationship, I was sold with two pages. It was a sexy and dangerous, fun and heartbreaking. The set-up for the rest of the series has me almost giddy with anticipation. And most importantly, I've learned to never doubt Kristin Ashley. After reading thirteen books of hers in a row, I've come to realize she can win me, anytime and anywhere.

A Favorite Moment:

One of his hands left my back. I watched his eyes get heated and intense as they studied my face. Then he did something beautiful, something amazing, something that, if I'd had any doubts as to my certainty, they would have disintegrated.
He tenderly slid the backs of his knuckles against the skin of my cheek while he muttered, "A year and a half. Totally missed out."

BLISS' TRICK OR SWEET HALLOWEEN HAUNT: CINDI MADSEN

Coming 10/29

Halloween for many is a time to dress up and have some fun.  Ever wonder what your favorite Entangled Bliss author’s best Halloween costumes have been or what their favorite Halloween memory is?  Follow the Bliss Trick or Sweet Halloween Haunt to check them all out.

I am so excited to welcome my friend Cindi Madsen to the blog!

Here Comes Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

One of my favorite Halloweens was the year I dressed up as Buffy and somehow convinced my hubby to be Angel. He agreed as long as he didn’t have to do much, thus the fake teeth. I’ve always been a Buffy fan, and I like to think I can wield a mean wooden stake. Even more fun, for critique group around Halloween, my writing partners and I dressed up. One of my friends writes adult vampire novels, so of course she was a vampire, and I was the slayer. Then we had a Guinevere in the mix. I still kick myself for not getting a pic of all of us together dressed like that. But I do have a couple of me and my husband in our outfits. Both Buffy and Angel, and then that moment Angelus comes out and I—Buffy—had to put the beat down.

Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a new pretty pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music, dancing, and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband and three children. She is the author of YA books All the Broken Pieces, Cipher, and Demons of the Sun and adult romances Falling for Her Fiancé, Act Like You Love Me, and Cinderella Screwed Me Over.

{REVIEW} FIGHTING FOR YOU by SYDNEY LANDON

Fighting For You (Danvers, #4)Series: Danvers #4
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Penguin Group
Publication Date: 10/15/13
Format: eARC
Pages:
Source: Received from publisher for review
Rating: 4 stars

Ella Webber has spent years uncomfortable around the opposite sex...
But as soon as she meets handsome Declan Stone, she is smitten. Quickly they become friends, finding frequent reasons to see each other around the office, and Ella longs for even more. So-with a little help from her friends-Ella resorts to performing a little seduction. One that Declan will never be able to resist.

Burdened by emotional baggage from his time in the army, Declan refuses to believe he's the right man for sweet Ella. Even if she makes him long for normal things, like marriage and family....But in his attempts to close off his heart from her love, could he have underestimated Ella's powers of persuasion?

I seem to have a real knack for picking up books, mid-to-late in the series. That's quite alright, though, when the stories are companions instead of continuations. It also works when the author does a nice job of writing a story that does contain back story and character history, but doesn't allow the reader to feel lost. Landon did a great job of this because not only did I enjoy Fighting For You, I want to go back to the beginning of the series.

Fighting For You is a fairly simple and very sweet love story between Declan and Ella. Declan is the haunted former soldier who's quiet and protective nature has captured Ella's interest. Ella is a sweet and formerly overprotective woman who's ready to live. Declan doesn't consider himself worthy of Ella, but Declan's the only one she wants. I was prepared for a long and drawn out tug-of-war between the two, but what I got was a low angst story of two people who find a way together.

As much as I enjoyed the story, I also really liked the writing in Fighting For You. I went into this story without a lot of expectations, only hoping to find a nice and easy story that would steal me away for a few hours. Not only did that happen, but I also found myself invested in the characters and in their happily ever after. I found not only Declan and Ella to both be engaging characters, but also the supporting cast, many of whom had their stories earlier in the series. These characters were funny and intriguing, and like I said, I want to know their stories.

Fighting For You was a story that I'd hoped to like, but found myself truly enjoying. It had me invested, and reading with a smile on my face. I can definitely recommend this to fellow lovers of contemporary romance.
