In this New York Times bestselling erotic enovella trilogy, a buttoned-up businesswoman takes her friend’s advice and has a fling with a stranger on a trip to Vegas—only to find herself under his mysterious, sexy power both in the boardroom and the bedroom.

Kasie Fitzgerald knows who she’s supposed to be. She’s a rising-star-workaholic at a global consulting firm. She’s the fiancée of a well-connected man who’s won the approval of her parents. People know that she’s reliable, serious, proper, cautious, pragmatic, and yes, a little predictable. She’s who Dave and her family want her to be.

But as her thirtieth birthday looms, buried feelings begin to resurrect. Her friend takes her to Vegas for one last wild and crazy night. In a dress much shorter and sexier than anything she has ever dared to wear before, she hits the blackjack tables. And meets him. Under the tailored clothes it’s clear that this is a man who is intense, powerful, and maybe even a little dangerous. With a touch of trepidation she accepts his invitation to get a drink, and before long, she’s in his hotel room.

She never gets his full name. Perhaps his anonymity is one of the reasons she’s able to give herself over to him and to the moment so completely. Perhaps it’s why she’s just had the most exquisite and passionate sex of her life. Shaken by her own behavior, Kasie tries to chalk it up to one crazy night. But when the mysterious gentleman she’s just had a fling with shows up in her office—as the CEO of a firm her company does a billion dollars of business with a year, demanding that she handle his account, and so much more—things will never be the same again. And there’s no telling where this will go…

First Impression... I've heard a lot about this book, but don't actually remember reading any reviews. The premise makes me nervous.

The Story... Just One Night was originally released in three novellas. I love that idea, and kind of wish I had read it in that way. Anyway... Kasie is feeling confined in her life. She has a safe job, a safe boyfriend, and she's bored. In Las Vegas, she meets a mysterious stranger while playing Blackjack. The two very quickly hit it off, and have a one night stand. In a move we all see coming, that one night stand follows her home, specifically to her work place. The chemistry from that one night is still dangerously potent; Kasie cannot walk away. She's left teetering between hanging onto her safe but controlled life, or jumping into the fire with Robert Dade. Her fiancé is a good guy, but stifling, and scary when he begins to show his insecurities. Robert is sexy and powerful. Kasie learns she may simply be exchanging one form of control for another.

The Characters...Kasie is a character many readers may empathize with. She's not a truly bad person, just confused and a weak in her decisions. That same indecisiveness is what will also make many readers hate her. Where did I fall? Kasie frustrated me, quite a lot, but the author also did a good job of making me understand why she took the actions (or inactions) she did. And to her credit, Kasie was a completely self aware character. She didn't excuse herself. She apologizes. She was human.

The two men in the Kasie's life are Dave, the fiancé and Robert. I felt sorry for both, but also disgusted by them. Dave was nice in the beginning, but not a good match for Kasie. His actions became a bit shocking and definitely infuriating.

Robert was an enigma. A sexy, controlling, powerful man, he's not something I am attracted to at all, but I guess I can see the appeal of a ruthless man who always gets what he wants. His background is touched on a little in the story, and he has some issues, but I never felt like I truly understood where he was coming from. I do think he and Kasie did experience a good deal of character growth.

The Writing... The writing was interesting. I really enjoyed the style for the most part. It was very compelling, but did veer over into the melodramatic. I also didn't particularly care for Kasie's extended fantasy sequences. But for the most part, I did find the story to be very intriguing. There were so many direction changes, character revelations, and Kasie's character development had me flying through the pages. I honestly had no idea whom, if anyone, Kasie would end up with until the very end.

In the End... Just One Night was a very interesting and sexy story. The characters are immensely flawed. Their actions were surprising and full of conflict. The character development, particulary Kasie's was terrific. I found Just One Night to be a very dynamic and interesting read.

Favorite Quote:

I didn't know it could be like this.
It's a cliché. A line every ingénue in every bad romantic comedy is forced to utter. The words are always spoken delicately as if our heroine has reached a new level of innocence.
This doesn't feel innocent. This feels fucking amazing. It feels like I'm coming alive.
I didn't know if could be like this.

"If you marry Dave, if you smile at him and tell him he's the only man you want...if you look at him in the eyes and tell him you're sure...if you tell him those lies while standing at the altar...will that be excusable? If you care about him, doesn't he deserve a wife who's sure she's making the right decision in marrying him?"

  7. I have conflicting feelings about reading this one, mostly because it involves a man she is already promised her life to and well i don't know... glad it wasn't a total waste of time for you though! I am still on the fence

  8. Hmmm. I'm getting better at being patient with characters but indecisiveness still grates on me. Also - I'm not a fan of the sexy, controlling type.

  13. I can see why the premise made you nervous. Cheating? I don't like those kinds. Glad you ended up enjoying it.

  15. I've read the first installment of Just One Night and I really liked it. I like the sound of Kasie's character growth, Andrea. Robert is a total enigma but I was enthralled with him just as much as Kasie. I didn't care of Kasie's fiance much. I think I liked this - at least the first part - because I'm finding I'm a fan of flawed characters. :) Great review, girl!

  16. This sounds good. I like the novella idea also. With so many books to review, it is sometimes easier to read them in quick segments, like novellas. I've found myself enjoying them more lately. Thanks for the great review.
