A LITTLE BIT CUPID BLOG TOUR ~ REVIEW AND TOP TEN

Stops here 3/28

Welcome to The Bookish Babe's stop on the A Little Bit Cupid Blog Tour! The tour is being hosted by Entangled Publishing. My stop includes a review and a Top Ten post with author Jennifer Shirk.

A Little Bit CupidGenre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Entangled Flirt
Publication Date: 1/13/13
Format: eARC
Pages: 84
Source: Received from publisher for review.

Finding love should be easy, but wedding photographer Phoebe Ward knows better. When Cupid shows up on a crazy mission to help her —and save the world in the process—Phoebe realizes love might be even more complicated than she thought. Even with Cupid showing her Mr. Right , she can’t stop thinking about his best friend, Mr. Wrong.

Cal Crawford has never had time for love, but now he’s falling for Phoebe. Which means it’s got to be just plain wrong to set her up with his best friend, right? But even though seeing Phoebe with someone else will break his heart, he can’t walk away from her.

Phoebe can’t afford to choose the wrong guy with the fate of the world at stake. But maybe Cupid has it wrong. Maybe she has to rely just a little bit on Cupid, and a whole lot more on her heart.

A Little Bit Cupid was a sweet, bite-sized story about finding true love.

This book was very short, and I read it in less than an hour. And I have to say, it made my wait at the Doctor's office much more bearable. I was smiling the entire time I read, and giggling more than a few times.

Since A Little Bit Cupid is so short, I really feel like I can't say a lot, or anything, without basically telling exactly what happens. But I can say that it was fun, charming, and well-written. I adored Cosmo E. Cupid III, he was a cigar smoking son of the original Cupid, and how cute is that?! Phoebe was an easy character to like as well, and I enjoyed the banter between her and Cal. I always love to see characters fall for the person the weren't actually looking for. Too cute!

If your liking for a sweet way to pass a bit of time, A Little Bit Cupid is a sure bet.

Favorite Quote:

She laughed. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean it to come out that way. I just meant that you're..."
  "Hot?" He finished hopefully.
She laughed again. "I was going to say special. But yes, you're cute, too. I'm glad we became friends."
Special. Cute. Friends. He wished she'd just cut his testicles off and be done with it already. Depending on the next adjective she chose for him, he would either qualify as a card-carrying member of the Emasculated Men's Club or a Muppet. No wonder he'd avoided love for as long as he had.  ~eARC, 55%

 Top Ten with Jennifer Shirk
Hi, all! Jennifer here!

In case you haven't heard, my latest romance novella A Little Bit Cupid centers around a woman named Phoebe who has to choose between two men: one, Cupid is saying is her soul mate (Adam) and another, who her heart is telling her is her soul mate (Cal).

Both men are very different. Cal is more your sexy/quiet type and Adam is more your nice guy-next-door type. Although I think they do have one thing in common: they're both smart "bookish" kind of men--meaning you'd definitely catch them with a book in their hands. :)

Since I'm here at The Bookish Babe, I thought it'd be fun to give my personal Top Ten List of Bookish Men for you all.

       Jennifer's Top Ten Bookish Men

1) Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones) in the "Indiana Jones" movies.
2) Noah Wyle (Flynn Carsen) in the "Librarian" movies.

3) James Spader (Daniel Jackson) in the original "Stargate" movie.

4) Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) in "Stargate SG-1"
5) Bobak Ferdowski (Nasa Flight Director for the Mars Rover )

(He's the real thing!!)
6) Russell Crowe (John Forbes Nash) in "A Beautiful Mind"
7)Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder Suresh) in "Heroes.

8) Hugh Grant in "Knotting Hill"

9) Brad Cooper in "The Words"
10) Val Kilmer in Batman

I'm definitely seeing a trend in the glasses thing with all these bookish men. Very sexy. :)
Thanks so much for having me today!

I hope you enjoyed my list, and I also hope you get to check out my own bookish men in A Little Bit Cupid--only 99 cents at an e-tailer near you!

Who would make it on your list of Bookish Men?

{EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY} OFF SIDES by SAWYER BENNETT

I'm happy to be able to share an excerpt and giveaway of Off Sides, by
Sawyer Bennett. This is a book that I will be reviewing soon, and I can't wait to share it with you. This event was organized by AToMR Tours.

Off SidesGenre: Contemporary New Adult
Publisher: Big Dog Publishing
Publication Date: 2/21/13

“I'm not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. I needed someone...something...to derail me from my current path. Otherwise, I would become lost...a hollowed out shell of a man. So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved...”

Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.

Forced her to abandon her music career after the heart breaking death of her parents, Danny Cross exists on the opposite side of the tracks from Ryan. She is struggling to make her own way, working two jobs, attending college part time and volunteering in a homeless shelter. She is on a mission to build her own success.

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days...

EXCERPT

Ryan opens my car door for me and takes my hand. We walk together to my apartment door and I'm looking for my keys in my purse, all of a sudden nervous. A minute ago I was ready to jump in bed with Ryan, but now, in the harsh fluorescent light of the hallway outside of my apartment, I'm faced with the uncertainty of a relationship with a man who is so different than me.
Putting his finger under my chin, Ryan tilts my head up to his and says, "Don't."
He knows I'm doubting this and that tells me a lot about how perceptive he is. Before I can respond he pulls me to him and kisses me...hard. And every thought flies out of my head.
My hands snake up his chest and wrap around his neck before slipping into his hair. It's as soft and silky as I had been trying hard not imagine. Our tongues are swirling...stabbing...and then my teeth grab his bottom lip and bite. He answers me with a guttural sound that vibrates from his mouth into mine.
Without breaking our hold on each other, Ryan pushes me one step backward until my back is pressed into my door. His hands graze down my sides until they reach my hips. His fingers dig in, pulling me tight against him and I can feel his hardness. I am drowning in Ryan, or maybe he's downing in me by the sounds of his ragged breathing, I do not know. I just know I have never been kissed like this before and something warm is unfurling in my chest in response to this passion.
Ryan finally pulls away slightly, breathing hard against my mouth. "Jesus, Danny."
I don't think Jesus has anything to do with the explosion that just happened between us but if He did, I'm heading to church this weekend to thank Him.

{REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY} MSHARK BAIT (GRAB YOUR POLE #1) by JENN COOKSEY

Shark Bait (Grab Your Pole #1)Series: Grab Your Pole #1
Genre: Mature Young Adult Contemporary
Publisher: self-published
Publication Date: 6/15/12
Format: Kindle
Pages: 319
Source: Bought

Previously homeschooled Camie Ramsey is being shoved into the shark-infested waters of public high school, where even helium filled, penguin bespeckled arm floaties likely won’t help keep her inexperienced, fifteen-year old head above water in that rip current of hormones and emotions.

Camie’s worldly wisdom might be severely lacking (i.e., the closest she’s come to being kissed was sitting too close to the TV whilst Jake Ryan leaned in to give Samantha that fateful 16th birthday kiss), but she does understand her only hope for survival is if she’s thrown some kind of “social” life preserver before she sinks like a freaking rock. However, what will her fate be when she endeavors to flag down the only lifeguard on duty, the enormously popular and ridiculously beautiful Tristan Daniels? The most sought after and virtually most unattainable guy in school who not only makes Camie’s heart flatline on a recurring basis, he’s also the one guy who seemingly doesn’t know she exists.

Feeling like an inept piece of chum that could ultimately be swallowed by Jaws, can Camie get Tristan to rescue her from floundering in the treacherous deep, or is she destined to be Shark Bait?

Author's Note:
While the tales themselves are fictional, some of the events and characters are very loosely based in reality and on my experiences—but don’t worry, the names of the characters, most of their unfortunate fashion sense and/or questionable taste in music has been changed to protect the not-so innocent.
______________________________________________

Due to language and some adult content, this book may not be suitable for readers under the age of 16

I'm going to do my level best here, to be brief and keep myself together, because what I really want to say is...

"OMFG. YOU GUYS MUST, MUST, MUST READ SHARK BAIT! IT IS HANDS DOWN ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ. GO NOW!!"

Ahem...

So yeah. That fanatic, CAP SMASH-riddled statement? I meant every word. I am seriously so mad at myself for not reading Shark Bait when I bought it, last June (!), that I'm contemplating punching myself in the face. I mean, how ridiculous is it that I have missed out on what is, without a doubt, at the tippy top of my favorites list?!

When I started Shark Bait, I assumed it was a sweet teenage love story. I love sweet teenage love stories. However, there is a whoooole lot more going on here. You have the coming-of-age story of Camie Ramsey, a girl who has been home-schooled her whole life, and now she is headed out into the big scary world of public education. And, she just moved. Aaand, her mom has cancer.

Camie quickly acclimates, and in what turns out to be a pleasant surprise, she thrives. Camie quickly makes friends, great friends. She also "meets" the guy she wants to fall in love with and marry. For real! Tristan Daniels. I have said many times before that I have a hard limit of age requirements on book boys I will swoon over. Tristan Daniels is pushing those limits to the breaking point. Holy jeez, that guy...yeah, I'm just going to stop talking about him now.

But before you start thinking Shark Bait is a sappy story full of too-good-to-be-true moments and insta-love, don't worry. Yes, she does easily fit into her new life, and she does harbor daydreams of walking down to aisle to Tristan, the entire story and Camie's observations are told with such wit and self-deprecation that it is clear that Camie does not take herself too seriously. She is sincerely one of the most endearing heroines I've had the pleasure of reading.

In addition to Camie's coming-of-age story, Shark Bait is also the story of the careful planning and cautious navigation of a first love. Of pushing for what you want, but having the self-respect to hold out for what you deserve. Expectations, disappointments, communication, happiness, despair, pain, betrayal, elation... every emotion that can possibly be experienced in the discovery of love is touched upon in Camie's story. The high, lows and every point in between.

Besides the story of Tristan and Camie, there is also the story of friendship. And that, that makes me happier than you can imagine. Camie makes some great friends at school, guys and girls alike, but none as close as Kate. Kate takes Camie on the first day of school, and helps her through every scary and happy moment. Kate is the kind of best friend we all hope for. In addition to Kate, though, Camie truly becomes friends with Tristan, and all of his guy friends, most notably "Dear Jeff", Kate's on-and-off boyfriend. This circle of close-knit friends is what being a teenager is all about, in my opinion. The way these kids teased each other, joked with each other, busted each other's balls, but always always had each other's backs, it was so much fun and so freaking fantastic to read.

So back to when I said Shark Bait wasn't just a sweet teenage love story? That was so true, and beyond surprising. There were these little moments, beginning with the prologue, that triggered a thought I couldn't quite put my finger on. But later in the story, the author would bring those little moments that niggled my brain, and gave bits of enlightenment over why this particular character said this, looked like that, etc. Authors who can do this to me, pull the story back around and slap me in the face with a surprise are why I love to read.

The Grab Your Pole series is not only about Camie, but this entire group of friends, and brings Camie's own family, particularly her sister Jillian (bad ass!), more firmly into the mix. And you guys, I am currently reading book two, The Other Fish in the Sea (shhhhh!), and I will say that Jenn Cooksey has further mananged to blow my mind.

Full of moments that will make you literally laugh out loud, clench up at the raw emotions of the characters and their experiences, gasp at the genius of the story unfolding, cry at the heartache and the happiness they experience. I can say that I have rarely had the experience of reading a book that has managed to dig this deep. Shark Bait, this series, is all that I've been talking and thinking about for days. And gosh, that is worth more than I can ever hope to express.

"Is something wrong?" I asked, not knowing why he'd gotten so "dreamy" out there or what that look was about, or, in fact, how to take any of it. I was second-guessing myself, as I oftentimes do, wondering if I'd just mistakenly read whatever might be growing between us to be more than what it is.
"No...not wrong. It's just...no one's ever understood it that way before." He sounded almost gratified. Then, adjusting the rearview mirror and looking out the windshield, Tristan quietly asked, "So, where do we go from here?"
The optimist in me thought it sounded like he could've been asking about us in a figurative way and I felt like saying, "I don't care where we go as long as I'm with you." My inner realist told him where I live instead.   ~27%

Kate caught up to Jeff to tell him we were leaving and when Tristan overheard, he turned back to me and with twinkling eyes and an unmistakable playfulness, he confirmed our date by saying, "So don't forget to put me down for epic failure and a complete lack of success on Friday...say about six, okay?" ~46%

{GUEST POST} EVERYDAY ROLE-PLAY from MINA VAUGHN

I'm excited to welcome author Mina Vaughn to the blog today. Mina is the author of the upcoming book, The Schoolteacher and the Submissive will be releasing this summer from Pocket Star. In the meantime, Mina has some helpful advice regarding role-play. (It's hilarious!)

Everyday Role-Play: It’s Not Just Dressing Like a Cheerleader

By Mina Vaughn

I’m here today to talk about role-play. Not the dungeons and dragons kind.

Well, OK maybe the dungeon part. No, that’s another post.

Ahem. Sexual role-play is a totally underrated way to bring some serious fun into a relationship. I think it takes a back burner to other kinks mainly because it has a stigma.

Several stigmas, actually.

First off, a lot of people think it’s cliché—dressing up like a french maid or a cheerleader and getting freaky.

All you have to do is take a look at costumes lately and you’ll see you can pretty much be a slutty anything for Halloween. Hmm, so many options. Dentist. Plumber. Slutty Ninja Turtle.

The second problem with role-play is that people feel silly getting into another character to have sex. Some feel like it’s creepy, others feel it’s almost cheating to pretend to be someone else. Why do you want me to dress like a nurse? Do you have a thing for a nurse? My sister? You bastard!

So those are the things that could go wrong. But there’s so much that can go right.

In my upcoming debut, THE SCHOOLTEACHER AND THE SUBMISSIVE, my protagonist Cerise has a real role-play fetish. But Cerise and William doesn’t do the stereotypical roles, not by a long shot. Some of their scenes include a pianist and opera star, a servant and a famous geisha, a paparazzi and a bombshell actress, the list goes on.

Think about your favorite TV shows and movies. Maybe have your man strip like Magic Mike and put dollars in his pants?

Does your partner watch superhero movies? Time for the XXX Men!

Sometimes you don’t even need costumes! What if you pretended to be strangers meeting at a bar? He could be a new neighbor who brings over a bottle of wine. Hell, throw on some hot yoga pants and see how far you can stretch.

The possibilities are endless if you just let go of the embarrassment-factor and lose yourself in a role. You can thank me (or spank me) later.

The Schoolteacher and the Submissive
(cover coming soon)

Cerise Norrel, Type A substitute teacher by day, is ready to quit
being a domme. Despite her best intentions, none of her partners can
keep up with her scene fetish and attention to detail—let alone her
demand that they have a costume and set waiting every afternoon by the
time she’s home from school.

Over a dozen potential subs have left her in the past year, but just
when Cerise thinks it’s impossible—that she’ll have to go back to
vanilla relationships, or be alone forever--she meets William, who
wants to make all her fantasies come true. He turns her home into a
geisha’s dream apartment, a concert hall with a grand piano (which he
uses to play an original composition while wearing a tuxedo), and even
rents an abandoned loft for a zombie apocalypse scene—complete with
canned goods.

But there's something strange about William. Well, a lot of strange
things. He must be absurdly rich, since he can afford to provide
extravagant costumes and props on a daily basis without having to
leave work early. He must be insane, since he puts up with Cerise's
over-the-top demands. And most importantly, he doesn't redden when
he's spanked, and his skin is as cool as satin sheets. When Cerise
discovers she's become domme to the infamous "Chilly Willy," as he's
known throughout BDSM urban lore, she begins to find out there's a
whole lot more to her handsome submissive than a creative mind and a
hard body.

And when it’s William, ironically, who starts pressing Cerise to give
him the kind of commitment she’s never given anyone, it’ll take
everything she has to work through her issues, confront her past, and
learn to be vulnerable.

 EXCERPT

In this segment, Cerise attends a BDSM speed-dating event and meets her match: William.

Then, I saw him.
An absolutely beautiful specimen was making his way towards my little table.

I sipped the soda again, careful to not smudge my lipstick. Typically, Dommes were easy to find at mixers—the redder the lipstick, the stricter the rules. Mine was crimson on the border of downright arterial. I had hoped that my selection would weed out the weaklings in the pack. I touched it up just in case it had faded and bent down to put the compact back into my bag. By the time I leaned back up, he was in front of me.

"Hello," he said sheepishly, eyes downcast.

This was a good sign. Subs ought to act their place at events like this—unlike that last jackass. Please, please be up to my challenge.

"Sit," I said to him, gesturing. His posture was erect, but guarded. This man was very stylish—a corduroy blazer over a graphic tee, paired with perfectly fitted dark jeans. Urban, hip. Thank God no leather—I didn't care how long I’d been involved in this sort of thing, I would never get into leather. Unless it was required for a scene...then it would be acceptable. He folded his hands neatly in his lap, and began the conversation in a surprisingly self-deprecating manner.

"I have something," he said, eyes still downcast, "I should tell you before we begin."

I leaned forward, ready to berate him for speaking out of turn, and not letting me begin our conversation. The nerve of these guys.

Then again, this was speed dating and I didn’t want to waste time with a lecture, so I allowed him to begin.

"I've never been kept by a Domme. I have been advised to tell you in advance a few of my qualities that have been turn-offs. Firstly, I can tolerate any kind of pain.”

Odd, but not a deal-breaker. I did the "go on" gesture, rolling my pointer finger.

“I flinch at nothing, nor do I bruise or redden. Many women have found this off-putting, if you like that sort of thing."

"Um, I'm a substitute teacher. I dish out pain all day. I'm not that kind of Domme," I explained to him, trying to put him somewhat at ease. His posture relaxed somewhat.

I probably shouldn’t have disclosed my occupation to this guy, but what was he going to do? Show up at every secondary school in the Seacoast region wearing assless chaps?

"I also have very cold hands," he said, trying to hold back his smirk. "It's been problematic in nearly every encounter I have had. Here, feel." I reached out my hands and touched his.

Freezer burn.

I recoiled slightly, but caught myself and steadied my hand. I said nothing. His eyes remained downcast.

He was stunningly handsome, I appraised, examining his face. Strong jaw, straight nose, blue-black tousled hair, and lips full enough to almost be considered feminine.

Almost.

"I don't mind cold hands. I'm from Nevada-- I love to feel the cold compared to the heat I grew up in. It's refreshing," I said. Oh boy, here comes the hurt, I told myself as I handed him my list of needs and wants. "I do, however, have a very long list of requirements, and I'm afraid I've scared everyone off, too. I'm just as used to rejection as you seem to be," I laughed. Half the local community thought it was great that I was a strong woman who won't settle for anything less than what I want, and the other half thought I was an insane bitch. "In fact, they call me the deal breaker." He smirked again, a small dimple forming in his chin.

He was wickedly handsome. If the room was less well-lit, I’d be tonguing his earlobe right now.

"Alright," he said, glancing at the dossier. "Hit me." He laughed at his choice of words for the situation. I did, too.

I shifted into uber-Domme mode and breathed in deep, ready for my long-winded explanation.

Last chance, Cerise.

"The requests I make of my subs are simple. Show up at my house Monday through Thursday at 2:00 pm sharp. On Monday through Wednesday, I will give you role play prompts. You must come up with the details, props, and costumes. You will email me details about the scenarios while I'm on my lunch break so I can arrive home in character. When I get home at three, you will be in costume and in character. Whatever outfit you may have for me will be hanging in my bathroom. We will perform the scene from three o' clock until whenever I feel it's over. You will then eat dinner with me and return home. On Thursdays, you will create an original scenario. You have free reign on those days, but please be creative. I may not be a Dominatrix in the traditional whips and chains sense, but I want your full subservience when you are with me. You will have three-day weekends to yourself." My voice was strict like a smack on the wrist with a wooden ruler. I hoped he understood that just because he was creating one scene per week, he was not in charge of where it went. I knew my methods were unconventional, but hey, whatever gets you off, right?

He listened intently, head cocked to the side, eyes still not leaving the table.

"Is that all?" he asked.

I gasped to myself. A taker? Usually guys weren't down with the hours AND the financial demands of coming up with new costumes and props four days a week. Then again, judging by this guy's clothes, he could afford it. Don't think I didn't notice the curvy R's on his Rock and Republic jeans. That cut retailed at $259 at Nordstrom.

And yes, in addition to being a Domme, I was a serious denim whore.

"No, that's not all," I said, worried that this will be the deal breaker. "You must come up with our first scenario right now. Don't let me down." I expected him to either tell me to fuck off, or to walk away in a daze after spending several minutes blathering his way through a half-assed attempt to come up with something that may excite me.

Of course, when hearing I was a teacher, nearly every potential sub told me the scenario where he was failing my class and wanted extra credit.

And would do "aaaanything" for it.

So, the men who usually made it to this round never made it out. Unoriginal pricks.

"I think I have one you’ll like, if I may," he said politely.

I must be dreaming. "Proceed," I said, both anticipating and dreading what was going to come out of his lips next. Please don't be a student scene…
