{REVIEW} THE OTHER FISH IN THE SEA (GRAB YOUR POLE #2) by JENN COOKSEY

The Other Fish in the Sea (Grab Your Pole #2)Series: Grab Your Pole #2
Genre: Mature Young Adult Contemporary
Publisher: self-published
Publication Date:
Format: eARC
Pages:
Source: Received from author for review

Coming in spring 2013!

Camie and Tristan are back and so are their friends! Dive deeper into the lives of the GYP gang with The Other Fish in the Sea, the second installment in the Grab Your Pole Series by Jenn Cooksey.

Alright. Let me just go on ahead and make a couple things perfectly clear.

1) Jenn Cooksey is an absolute writing genius.

2) As much as I loved Shark Bait (believe me, it's a hardcore love), I can say with complete assurance that I loved The Other Fish in the Sea even more.

To be honest, this is one of the most difficult reviews I've written. I have so much to say, but I am terrified of spoiling both books one and two. And honestly, I've been over this with Autumn at Autumn Review multiple times, and we've both concluded that nothing we can say in our reviews will justify just how truly special this series is. You have to read it to understand.

Now, I can sit here and say the characters were endearing, engaging and I love them to pieces. And I can also say that the story was surprising, heartbreaking, magical, and flat-out perfect as they come. Both statements are true to my experience. But still, those statements only touch the edge of what I believe to be true of the Grab Your Pole series.

The Other Fish in the Sea is a larger story than Shark Bait. Cooksey took what I only suspected to be supporting characters, and made the story theirs, as well. This book is told not only from Camie's point-of-view, but also Kate, Melissa, and Jillian's. What I learned about these girls made me gasp, smile, fist pump, and cry. Sometimes the tears were from happiness, a bittersweet moment, but also of the worst kind of heartbreak. Don't jump to conclusions, though. I was continually surprised by the events of the story.

And the boys. Sa-woon. Not only do we have the uber-hottie Tristan Daniels, but his friends are also part of the larger story. "Dear" Jeff, "Lonely" Pete, all play bigger roles. And can I just say, these boys are an absolute riot. All extremely aggressive (in a good way!), lovable, hilarious, and loyal guys, these boys are the kind of guys I want my son to be and my daughter to date. Now, that's not to say that they're perfect, but they are good boys, and they work hard to be the kind of guys their girls deserve. And...I'm not naming names, for fear of spoilage and death by author, but there's a darkhorse in the story who has sort of won my heart.  I have to keep my love a secret for now, but: You keep being awesome, you sexy bitch!

The thing is, these books are real as the get. Camie, Tristan and the rest of the gang are not delivered a cake walk. Mistakes are made, conclusions are jumped to, angry words are spoken. And sometimes, it's almost more than they (really, I) can take. I have to say, these characters, particularly Tristan and Camie really mess up. But you know what, that is realistic for people their age. This is the first time either of them have ever dealt with emotions of this magnitude. If you think about it, Camie is pretty young and has lived a very sheltered life. She's not naive, but she does have a lot of growing up to do. And not only is she dealing with first love, but it's with a guy like Tristan. I've never really considered Tristan to be a "bad boy", more of an overly-blessed, kind of spoiled, good guy. And though he is very mature, deep, and responsible, he is still learning to be in a relationship for the first time. These two are dynamite when pushed. They fight, hard. But they also love hard, too. And there are times when they both made me so frustrated and hurt that I wanted to sit them down and slap some sense into them, to tell them to communicate. But they are growing up. And I have to say, keep the big picture in mind. Tristan and Camie have are young and have a lot to learn about love. But I can also say that their moments of connection or of simply having fun were just beautiful and so much fun to read.

Lessons have to be learned. Decisions must be made. Trust must be granted. Happy endings must be earned. The road to true love is bumpy as hell, and these kids better put on some padding.

I'm a "feelings" reader. I base my love for a book by how much I am consumed by the story, by how much I smile, laugh, cry, and pull my hair out. By those accounts, The Other Fish in the Sea is perfection. And I can honestly honestly say that it stands up as an all-time favorite.

Favorite Quotes:

“Thanks for rilin’ her up for me, I might owe you.” Seriously, he thanked them. See what Jillian and I meant about not being able to handle the reins?
I smacked him a couple times, which just made it worse because he sighed whimsically (Yeah, whimsically.) and said, “Ahhh, I just love foreplay.” Then he picked me up in the way that’s become kind of normal for us—you know, the backwards piggy-back way—and as he turned to carry me away he said, “Come on Baby, let’s go fight and find out how much I owe ‘em.”
“But I don’t wanna fight,” I pouted and laid my head on his shoulder.
“Well that’s okay, Baby, we don’t have to fight…how ‘bout finding out what a phenomenal bunkmate I am instead?”

“Camie, for the love of God, would you please do something about him…I don’t think he’s gone this long and it’s making me nervous...and I’m not very photogenic.”
Tristan took a picture of me this morning that revealed I’m not very photogenic either so I feel for Pete. “Welcome to my world…what you need to do is keep him away from cameras of all kinds and get him to agree to boundaries. He’s pretty good about sticking to them. Well, most of the time. Sometimes. Alright, only occasionally…you know what, Pete? You’re screwed.”

Jeff: “Aw Katy…you know I hate watchin’ you try clothes on…” (We hear Jeff make a feeble attempt to cover the mouthpiece and then he said,Dude, you have like five minutes to learn how to answer does this make me look fat without pissing your girlfriend off… and Tristan’s response of aw fuck.)
Kate: “I know, but this won’t be that bad, I promise.”
Jeff: “Yeah, yeah…where are you?”
Kate: “Victoria’s (We hear the sound of a chair being scraped backwards and most likely hitting the ground and then Tristan yelped, Ouch! You’re pulling my hair not my shirt, you fuck!) Secret.”
Jeff: “We’re on our way!” (Before the phone is disconnected we hear Jeff tell Tristan where it is he’s dragging him and then two pairs of feet pounding on the concrete.)

He didn’t say anything but he gave me a squeeze and a sweet kiss on my forehead before nestling me closer against him and then, finally, we were both able to fall asleep. And as I did, the delicate sound of sprinkling rain pattering the world outside made me think about the fresh blooms and new leaves I would no doubt see on the plants and it reminded me that after every storm there will inevitably be new growth and that isn’t something to fear, but something to welcome and look forward to, and really, something to be in awe of.

He played it for me and he's so right... I love it. I'm tearing up again...jeez, he really knows how to tug on my heartstrings. It's so weird that it would be a guy who really doesn't give a shit about anyone of anything who would make me feel so wanted. Not wanted as in physically desired, although he definitely does that, but wanted for just me, you know?

Title: Shark Bait
Series: Grab Your Pole #1
Author: Jenn Cooksey
Released: 6/15/2012

Previously homeschooled Camie Ramsey is being shoved into the shark-infested waters of public high school, where even helium filled, penguin bespeckled arm floaties likely won’t help keep her inexperienced, fifteen-year old head above water in that rip current of hormones and emotions.

Camie’s worldly wisdom might be severely lacking (i.e., the closest she’s come to being kissed was sitting too close to the TV whilst Jake Ryan leaned in to give Samantha that fateful 16th birthday kiss), but she does understand her only hope for survival is if she’s thrown some kind of “social” life preserver before she sinks like a freaking rock. However, what will her fate be when she endeavors to flag down the only lifeguard on duty, the enormously popular and ridiculously beautiful Tristan Daniels? The most sought after and virtually most unattainable guy in school who not only makes Camie’s heart flatline on a recurring basis, he’s also the one guy who seemingly doesn’t know she exists.

Feeling like an inept piece of chum that could ultimately be swallowed by Jaws, can Camie get Tristan to rescue her from floundering in the treacherous deep, or is she destined to be Shark Bait?

I've already read The Other Fish in the Sea, and I can promise it's even better than Shark Bait (if that's even possible).

Check out an excerpt

“Come on dude, just talk Camie into pitchin’ something you can knock outta the ball park, I’m sure you’ve done it before…” the big-mouth-jerk-Brandon said. Seriously, I was all for giving him a break for not having any tact, but now? Yeah, not so much.

“Mm-mm. Can’t.” Totally can if he really wanted to, so he should’ve said won’t.

“Why not?” Because he’s not an asshole!

Tristan studied Brandon for quick moment while he took a drink and then said, “Few reasons…one, I don’t get off on coercing chicks, that’s fucked up. Two, my batting average makes her nervous so she’s agreed to walk me instead of saying I hit a foul and me having to pick up the bat again…and don’t get me wrong, I’m more than goddamned grateful for getting that because I also made a fuckin’ error, so I’m just lucky to still be in the goddamned game at all. And three, stealing is a contract violation, the consequences of which would be that she’d trade me faster than you can say Bob’s her uncle and I really like being on this team.”

Aww…that’s so sweet. Isn’t that just so sweet? He deserves some leeway for that.

I'm going to do my level best here, to be brief and keep myself together, because what I really want to say is...

"OMFG. YOU GUYS MUST, MUST, MUST READ SHARK BAIT! IT IS HANDS DOWN ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ. GO NOW!!"

Ahem...

So yeah. That fanatic, CAP SMASH-riddled statement? I meant every word. I am seriously so mad at myself for not reading Shark Bait when I bought it, last June (!), that I'm contemplating punching myself in the face. I mean, how ridiculous is it that I have missed out on what is, without a doubt, at the tippy top of my favorites list?!

When I started Shark Bait, I assumed it was a sweet teenage love story. I love sweet teenage love stories. However, there is a whoooole lot more going on here. You have the coming-of-age story of Camie Ramsey, a girl who has been home-schooled her whole life, and now she is headed out into the big scary world of public education. And, she just moved. Aaand, her mom has cancer.

Camie quickly acclimates, and in what turns out to be a pleasant surprise, she thrives. Camie quickly makes friends, great friends. She also "meets" the guy she wants to fall in love with and marry. For real! Tristan Daniels. I have said many times before that I have a hard limit of age requirements on book boys I will swoon over. Tristan Daniels is pushing those limits to the breaking point. Holy jeez, that guy...yeah, I'm just going to stop talking about him now.

But before you start thinking Shark Bait is a sappy story full of too-good-to-be-true moments and insta-love, don't worry. Yes, she does easily fit into her new life, and she does harbor daydreams of walking down to aisle to Tristan, the entire story and Camie's observations are told with such wit and self-deprecation that it is clear that Camie does not take herself too seriously. She is sincerely one of the most endearing heroines I've had the pleasure of reading.

In addition to Camie's coming-of-age story, Shark Bait is also the story of the careful planning and cautious navigation of a first love. Of pushing for what you want, but having the self-respect to hold out for what you deserve. Expectations, disappointments, communication, happiness, despair, pain, betrayal, elation... every emotion that can possibly be experienced in the discovery of love is touched upon in Camie's story. The high, lows and every point in between.

Besides the story of Tristan and Camie, there is also the story of friendship. And that, that makes me happier than you can imagine. Camie makes some great friends at school, guys and girls alike, but none as close as Kate. Kate takes Camie on the first day of school, and helps her through every scary and happy moment. Kate is the kind of best friend we all hope for. In addition to Kate, though, Camie truly becomes friends with Tristan, and all of his guy friends, most notably "Dear Jeff", Kate's on-and-off boyfriend. This circle of close-knit friends is what being a teenager is all about, in my opinion. The way these kids teased each other, joked with each other, busted each other's balls, but always always had each other's backs, it was so much fun and so freaking fantastic to read.

So back to when I said Shark Bait wasn't just a sweet teenage love story? That was so true, and beyond surprising. There were these little moments, beginning with the prologue, that triggered a thought I couldn't quite put my finger on. But later in the story, the author would bring those little moments that niggled my brain, and gave bits of enlightenment over why this particular character said this, looked like that, etc. Authors who can do this to me, pull the story back around and slap me in the face with a surprise are why I love to read.

The Grab Your Pole series is not only about Camie, but this entire group of friends, and brings Camie's own family, particularly her sister Jillian (bad ass!), more firmly into the mix. And you guys, I am currently reading book two, The Other Fish in the Sea (shhhhh!), and I will say that Jenn Cooksey has further mananged to blow my mind.

Full of moments that will make you literally laugh out loud, clench up at the raw emotions of the characters and their experiences, gasp at the genius of the story unfolding, cry at the heartache and the happiness they experience. I can say that I have rarely had the experience of reading a book that has managed to dig this deep. Shark Bait, this series, is all that I've been talking and thinking about for days. And gosh, that is worth more than I can ever hope to express.
