EXCERPT AND GIVEAWAY: BEAUTY FROM SURRENDER (BEAUTY #2) by GEORGIA CATES

I'm happy to be able to share an excerpt and giveaway of Beauty from Surrender, by Georgia Cates. Georgia is also giving away a Kindle! I have heard only great things about book one, Beauty from Pain, and hope to read it soon. This event was organized by AToMR Tours.

Beauty from Surrender (Beauty, #2)Series: Beauty #2
Category: Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Georgia Cates
Publication Date: 5/30/13

How do you move on when he’s every song you sing?

After Laurelyn Prescott walks away from the love of her life, she returns to Nashville to pursue the only dream she has left. Determined to find a distraction from the pain of losing Jack Henry, she immerses herself in her music. But with her old life comes old acquaintances and new expectations. When Laurelyn refuses her record producer’s outrageous demands, she finds herself without a career—until an unforeseen opportunity presents itself. From there it’s a rocket ride straight to the top where Laurelyn finds the success she’s always dreamed of. Will it be enough to bring her the happiness she so deserves, or will the absence of Jack Henry leave her wanting more?

Jack Henry McLachlan never expected to fall in love with Laurelyn Prescott—but he did. After he foolishly let her slip through his fingers, he spends three months searching for her, but their reunion doesn’t come easy. The woman he finds isn’t the same one who drifted away without a goodbye. No longer an insecure girl on an Australian adventure, this Laurelyn is a successful musician with a promising career. Her dreams are becoming a reality, and Jack is terrified his American girl won’t have a place for him in her new life. With only a month to convince her otherwise, will it be enough time to make her visualize a life beyond the glitz and glamour, a life that includes him?

EXCERPT

(Jack McLachlan’s POV)

Three. Long. Fucking. Months. That’s how long it’s been since I’ve seen Laurelyn. And I don’t think I can take another minute. I die a little more each day she isn’t in my life.
She’s been damn near impossible to find. Fate has worked against us every step of the way. The hoops Jim has jumped through for the smallest bit of information have been ridiculous. One step forward, two steps back—instead of the other way around. A criminal on the run would’ve been easier to find.
But I’ve finally found her. Laurelyn Paige Prescott—better known to the public by her stage name as Paige McLachlan—that’s the woman I’m here to see tonight.
I still smile when I think about her taking my name, but I can’t help but ponder why she’d need to use a stage name. She never mentioned using one before and it makes me wonder if something happened with the sperm donor. Or worse—maybe with Blake Phillips.
I enter the auditorium lobby and the thick crowd makes it difficult to push through. The Martin I’m carrying adds to my difficult navigation as I bump shoulders through the horde, so I have to apologize with each step.
I find my assigned seat. Because I’m a creature of habit, I’m happy when I see it’s in a dark corner. I sit and place the Martin by my feet. I’m nervous and adrenalized as evidenced by my rapidly beating heart. I’m about to see the woman I love walk out onto that stage.
I look at the time and see it’s only a minute until eight. My heart is pounding erratically, throbbing in my ears over the loud crowd. Finally, musicians begin filing onto the stage to take their places. That’s when I see her for the first time in three months. My Laurelyn. All the time and distance that separated us disappears upon finally seeing her face again.
She looks the same, yet different. Her hair is a little longer and darker. Her honey highlights are missing and she’s slimmer. She’s still beautiful as ever but doesn’t fit the image etched in my mind these last few months.
She’s wearing brown boots—the same ones she wore the first time I saw her—with stonewashed jeans and a strapless white top. Her bare shoulders make me desperate to touch her exposed skin. And kiss it. Her top is fitted below her breasts while the bottom flows loosely over her jeans. I picture them riding low on her hips so I have easy access to kiss her belly.

{BLOG TOUR} GOING UNDER SERIES (SHALLOW) by GEORGIA CATES

Stops by 10/1 & 10/8

Welcome to The Bookish Babe's stop on the Going Under Blog Tour! The tour is being hosted by AToMR Tours. You can find the complete tour schedule here. This week is all about Shallow, book two in the Going Under Series. My stop includes my review of Shallow and a tour giveaway.

Shallow (Going Under, #2) Series: Going Under #2
Publisher: Georgia Cates
Publication Date: Sept 21, 2012 Format: ebook (Kindle) Pages: 261 Source: Received from author for review.

Payton Archer's best friend, Claire, strives to be perfect in every way. Payton doesn't and this is her story.

Nick Hawke likes his car fast and his girls even faster. He blows through females quicker than his muscle car races down the "The Strip" in Collinsville and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Determined to avoid the devastation he has watched his father endure in the aftermath of his mother leaving, he believes there is no room in his life or his heart for a relationship lasting more than one night. He seeks happiness in things that won’t let him down...fast cars, adrenaline and one night stands. To his absolute dismay, all of that changes when he unexpectedly runs into an old friend and is introduced to Payton Archer, the first girl he ever wanted for more than one night. There’s only one catch...she is completely immune to him and his smooth talking ways.

Payton Archer is looking for what Claire has with Jessie, but she has given up on finding it...at least until she leaves for college in the Fall because she is certain that is where she will find the perfect guy to fit into her perfect world. She plans on Summer being nothing but three uneventful months of fun, but it turns out to be anything but ordinary when Payton is introduced to Nick Hawke, one of Jessie’s old Collinsville friends. She is shocked by her immediate and intense attraction for “Hawke” because nothing about him is what Payton is looking for. Sure, he’s hot and sexy but he comes from Collinsville and that is definitely not on her list of prerequisites. Everything about him makes Payton’s heart speed because he is exciting and dangerous, but his fast car and the dangerous chances he takes aren't what scares Payton the most...it’s the way Nick Hawke makes her feel every time he looks at her. Can Payton find that moment of total fearlessness and make the decision to leave the safe, shallow end of love to risk going under completely?

With an against-all-odds couple that you will love and root for, Shallow is a beautiful sequel in the Going Under Series by Georgia Cates.

Wow. I had high hopes for Shallow because, let's face it, Payton is one badass chick. The girl nearly stole Going Under from Claire and Jessie and I was beyond pumped for her to have her own story. Georgia Cates delivered. Shallow was everything I'd hoped for and so much more. Seriously, the story, particularly Payton, was almost too awesome to handle.

In Shallow, just like Going Under, you have another privileged girl falling for a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. It's a story of a girl who has everything, but only wants one thing: love. It's a story of a boy who is looking for another hook-up, but stumbles into the love of a lifetime. I said this with my review of Going Under: the particular story isn't anything new, but with characters that you will love and root for, Georgia Cates delivers stories that will win you over.

I would love nothing more than to sit here and gush, gush, gush over Payton and Nick. These two are some of my favorite characters I've read in quite a while. Payton is truly one of a kind. With her smart mouth and "never back down" attitude, she was clearly (in my mind) written for me.

"Sarcasm, insult, and mockery...my work here was done."

I'm serious, I want to be best friends with Payton. I could only hope to be half as awesome as this girl.

As for Nick, we're talking Swoon City here, ladies. Nick is exactly my favorite type of bad boy. He's actually not that bad at all. Sure, he sleeps around, but that's something I can overlook. What matters to me is that he is good to girl he loves. That he is sincere and honest. And holy geez, the boy apparently has some serious skills. *waggles eyebrows*

Shallow was everything I hoped for and more. I got a great love story, characters that made me laugh and cry, and I just had a darn good time reading it. I know I've already said this multiple times in this review, but Payton Archer is one of the best, funniest characters I've ever read. I honestly hate to let Nick and her go. And when you leave a book with those feelings, you can truly not ask for more. To tell the truth, I may or may not have already started begging Georgia for another Going Under book. Fingers crossed!

Stops by 10/1 & 10/8

Welcome to The Bookish Babe's stop on the Going Under Series Tour! This tour is spotlighting both books in the series, Going Under and Shallow. The tour is being hosted by the ladies at AToMR Tours. You can find the complete tour schedule here.  Today's stop includes my review of Going Under, an interview with Georgia Cates, and a tour giveaway.

Going UnderSeries: Going Under #1
Publisher: Georgia Cates
Publication Date: Mar. 10, 2012
Format: ebook (Kindle)
Pages: 222
Source: Personal Purchase
Jessie Boone is a self proclaimed bad boy and doesn’t march to the beat of anyone’s drum, but his own. Growing up in less than desirable circumstances has made him no stranger to the hard knock life and his determination to leave it behind is fierce. When he finds himself transferred to East Franklin High School, he sees his opportunity to use his athletic ability to snag a college football scholarship, but Forbes Henderson, the player Jessie means to replace isn’t giving up his spot willingly. In fact, Forbes is willing to go to extreme measures to retain his place as first string quarterback. When Forbes’ malicious plan to injure his replacement fails, Jessie is furious and determined to show him he messed with the wrong person; not only is he going to take the position of first string quarterback, he’s going to take his girl, too.

Claire Deveraux is perfection at it’s best. She is beautiful, intelligent and unaware she just became Jessie Boone’s conquest as revenge against her boyfriend, Forbes Henderson. Like her flawless performance as the perfect daughter and student, Claire’s production of being the perfect girlfriend has everyone fooled, except Jessie Boone, and she fears this tattooed bad boy will see her secret desire to explore his crude threats and promises to rock her perfect world. If she decides to give in to one uninhibited moment with Jessie, will she learn too late that it was all an act of vengeance or will Jessie learn the taste of first love is sweeter than that of revenge?

A heart-wrenching story of a love that can overcome all obstacles, Going Under will leave you believing love can conquer all.

For quite some time now, my friend Autumn has been insisting that I read Going Under. She's quite the persistent book pimp because I bought Going Under even though I'm buried in books. I was really excited when the tour came up because it gave me the extra incentive to read this book sooner rather than later.

Going Under is the classic story of a boy from the wrong side of town and the perfect, priviledged girl falling in love and fighting the odds. It's a fairly common story scenario in YA, and one that I happen to love more than most. What did make Going Under stand out, for me, was the characters.

Jessie is a reluctant bad boy who transfer to a school in the affluent part of town. He is smart, athletic, caring towards his siblings. His past, though, is a tragic story; one that will have you falling in love with this boy who only wants to improve his life and provide for those he loves.

Claire is the perfect daughter, student, girlfriend...at least on the outside. She feels constricted by what is expected of her, and is instantly drawn to the seductive Jessie. Claire was a trickier because too often characters like her, those who have it all and seem too perfect, can quickly become annoying. By giving her depth, in making mistakes and having a surprising past of her own, Cates made Claire a character to root for.

My favorite character was Claire's best friend, Payton. Ohmygosh, this girl was insane! Payton is a girl who made me laugh out loud, cringe with her honesty and in general just brought enjoyment of Going Under to a new level.

I will say that the ending of Going Under felt a bit rushed. It's not that all the plot threads didn't get wrapped up, because they did. It's just that I wanted more. When you read as much as I do, that's a Good Thing. I can't wait to read more about these characters in book two, Shallow.

Favorite Quote:

"I watched the other players as they lined up to turn in their physicals and thought about how some things never changed for me. I had spent my entire life raising my hand to tell someone I didn't have the things I needed and here I stood, eighteen years old, still doing the same thing." (1%)

"When you look back on this moment months from now, don't forget the one word I'm about to say to you, Claire Deveraux. Foreplay." <----Payton! (8%)

"I won't disagree with you about Forbes and his skills, but I'm calling bullshit. I know the game like your crotch knows the palm of your hand and I definitely saw a move, so I'm giving you the luxury of a warning."  <----I love Payton! (9%)

INTERVIEW WITH GEORGIA CATES

Love and revenge seem to be themes of this book. What inspired this particular plot?
Georgia: I’m not sure I was inspired by anything. The idea just came to me out of the clear blue and once I started writing it, it was more like the book wrote itself and my fingers obeyed.

What makes this book stand apart from your other work?
Georgia: My other works are paranormal and this was my first contemporary work. It was an idea that came to me while I was writing my second Agape book and I couldn’t shake the need to write it.

What was the most difficult part in writing this story?
Georgia: I was used to writing paranormal, so I found it difficult to write “normal” things. With paranormal, some things simply don’t have to have a rationale and that’s not the case with contemporary. It has to be logical and realistic.

What was the most fun?

Georgia: I loved writing from the male POV. It was fun to get into Jessie’s head and try to connect with the things a guy might think and say, but I had to be careful. I couldn’t go “all out guy” with it because I had to keep it YA.

What is your favorite scene in GOING UNDER?
Georgia: The Epilogue is my favorite part, but I can’t tell you about it or I’ll give the best part away. I can say that it wraps the whole story up in a nice little package.

Is there anything you would like readers to take away after reading the book they may miss that you want to point out?
Georgia: There is one line in the book that I wouldn’t want readers to miss. It’s in Chapter 21 and the line solidifies the cover with the title.
"I leaned closer and pressed a light kiss on his lips and whispered, “I feel myself...going under. I’m drowning in you because I am so hopelessly in love with you. You’re the only one I want.”

Welcome to The Bookish Babe's stop on the Blood Jewel Blog Tour. The tour is being hosted by AToMR Book Tours. You can find the complete tour schedule here. My stop on the tour includes my review of Blood Jewel and the tourwide giveaway.

Blood Jewel (The Vampire Agápe Series #2)Series: The Vampire Agape #2
Publisher: Self-Published
Publication Date: May 31, 2012
Pages: n/a (ebook)
Source: Received from author for review.
With the mystery of Chansey Leclaire and Curry Brennan’s connection solved, they are free to explore their newfound love for one another. Or so they thought...

When Marsala uses a witch and black magic to discover Curry’s whereabouts, he and Chansey are left with no choice. The newly engaged couple is forced to relocate away from their families at the new compound in Savannah, which causes some major changes in the plans for their upcoming wedding.

Relocating to Savannah might have saved Curry and Chansey from being discovered by Marsala, but it doesn’t stop her attempts to reach Curry or her efforts to harm Chansey through the use of black magic. As Marsala closes in, Curry faces the decision he never wanted to make. Will he keep Chansey human or condemn her to eternity as the thing he hates most? As Curry waits for his hand to be forced, a newly turned vampire arrives at the Savannah compound in need of help. Not only is she a fledgeling in transition, she brings reports of escaping from a vampire cult still in possession of her sister, a human. Any attempt to save the captive human from a cult of vampires puts everyone in jeopardy. Can they risk entering a large cult to save one human being? And is so, how could they possibly do it successfully? Love will grow. New mysteries will arise. A battle will ensue. A Blood Jewel will be found.

**This review is spoiler-free for Blood Jewel. There may be spoilers if you haven't read Blood of Anteros.**

With star-crossed lovers and captivating prose, Blood Jewel sure to win over those looking to get swept away with a romantic story.

After the way Blood of Anteros, ended, I was anxious to start reading Blood Jewel. Now that the "getting to know you" phase was over, I wanted to know what happens next. What do you do when the one you love is a fragile human, and you are timeless? Curry and Chansey have plans for a long, happy future together, but Curry's maker Marsala still hasn't given up on him. She wants Curry back, and Chansey out of the way for good. Chansey and Curry's Agape bond continues to grow stronger, changing them both in impossible and miraculous ways. Meanwhile, the Coven learns of the Blood Jewel, and what they find out may put the most unlikely person at risk. From start to finish, Blood Jewel is full of conflict and revelations.

If you're looking for a romantic super-couple, look no further than Curry and Chansey. When I first began the series, I assumed Chansey would be a meek, soft-spoken shadow to Curry. I'm happy to say that is so not the case. Chansey is a firecracker! Most girls would be afraid of a centuries old vampire hell bent on revenge. Not Chansey. When she learns what lengths Marsala will go to in order to get rid of her, she basically says "Bring it, b*tch." How awesome is that, right?

I think I mentioned in my review of Blood of Anteros that while I did like Curry, I found him to be a tiny bit creepy with the way he watched Chansey. I'm happy to say that I didn't find him to be at all creepy in Blood Jewel, just a bit overprotective and uber-romantic. And he even pokes fun of his stalker tendencies, which put a big smile on my face. Curry is definitely more vulnerable in this book, and I loved seeing that side of him.

I found Blood Jewel to be romantic, exciting and surprising. I can safely say that I did not see most of it coming! The plot twists keep coming until the very end, taking turns that I didn't fathom when I started the series. The writing is beautiful and romantic. The love story is swoon-worthy. To be honest, when I think of how long I must wait until the next story, I want to cry a little bit. If you love Paranormal Romance with a strong emphasis on the romance, Blood Jewel (and Blood of Anteros) is the book for you.

'This is the spot,' she said.
She loved to play games with  me. 'What spot?'
She leaned closer and placed her palms against my chest, then whispered low enough that Harvey wouldn't hear. 'This is where I'm going to rock your world every night, Curry Brennan.' " (ebook, 17%)

Blog Tour ~ Blood of Anteros (The Vampire Agape Series #1) by Georgia Cates

Welcome to The Bookish Babe's stop on the Blood of Anteros (The Vampire Agape Series #1) Blog Tour. The tour is being hosted by AToMR Book Tours. You can find the complete tour schedule here. My stop includes a review of Blood of Anteros by Georgia Cates.

Blood of Anteros (The Vampire Agápe, #1)Series: The Vampire Agape Series #1
Publisher: Self-Published
Publication Date: September 21, 2011
Source: Received from author for review.
"I was tantalized by the mystery of her. The leech inside me came out to find prey, but found none in this enigmatic girl. The close proximity of her essence didn’t entice the monster within, so what did that make her? I had more questions than answers, but one thing was unmistakable; although she released me from her embrace, her hold on me remained."

Cruel circumstances turned Curry Brennan into the wretched monster he hates and refuses to accept, but when an expected turn of events releases him from the bond of his obsessive maker, he returns to the home he knew 161 years earlier and finds the return of happiness and joy in something he didn’t know existed. Puzzled by his growing attraction to Chansey Leclaire, a human, he is unable to resist the captivating relationship that threatens to reveal his existence as a vampire. He eventually discovers the reason he was destined to find what he didn’t know he searched for and is faced with the cruel realization that the living and the immortal undead will always be separated by one thing. Eternity.

Blood of Anteros opens with a rare eclipse and a broken curse. The promise of a blessing and a gift. With such an intriguing opening, the story captured my attention.

I've read so many vampire-centric books. Haven't we all? So I'm always hoping that an author will bring something new to the table, and author Georgia Cates definitely does so. Her vampires aren't a new offering, but her lore of the Agape, or Daughter of Anteros, certainly is. The Agape is a human with supernatural aspects that is meant for one vampire mate. Their bond is strong, and lasting, but not without complications. Naturally.

Blood of Anteros is told from Curry's point of view. Curry is a vampire, over one hundred, sixty years old, who has returned to his former home. He soon meets a girl whose very essence seems to call for him. I liked the story is told through the male vampire's perspective. It's a nice change from the usual human girl's point of view. The voice for Curry is authentic. He speaks like a Southern man from the 1800s (think Bill Compton). He's a proper Southern gentleman is his actions and words.

The object of Curry's love, Chansey, was lovely. I didn't feel as if I knew her all that well, since I didn't get her perspective. She's very accepting of Curry and his ways, but also strong when she needs to be. I look forward to knowing her better in the next book. The fact that Chansey is not fully human does help make up for the fact that her reactions to the events in the story don't always ring true.

There is one aspect to the story that didn't sit well with me: Curry sneaks in Chansey's bedroom at night and watches her sleep. I know, he's so in love and is protective over her. But, in my world, sneaking in my room and watching me sleep only earns you a whiffle bat to the face. Does that make me an unromantic grump? Maybe. I can't help it. Starey eyes creep me out.

Blood of Anteros was a book that I did enjoy, but didn't fall head over heels in love with. But that happens a lot with me and first books in a series. I did find author Georgia Cate's writing to be quite lovely and very romantic and am looking very forward to reading book two, Blood Jewel, soon.
