Title: A Safe Space
Author: E.M. Tippetts
Age Group: NA
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Everyone needs a safe space.

For Lizzie Warner, that space has always been in front of the camera on her hit show, or on stage to a sold out concert arena. Since before she can remember, she’s been a star, but that may be about to change.

She’s nineteen. Her show has been cancelled and now she’s going to play the lead in a new prime time drama series, but is the world ready to take her seriously, or will she be typecast as the cute tween queen forever?

Her network has decided to be aggressive and has invested millions of dollars in an ad campaign for her show, money she’s not sure she can earn back. Her co-star can’t stand her, and the writing for the show turns out to be poor at best. The only reason Lizzie didn’t walk away from the job offer to begin with is because she’s broke, the victim of a decade of bad money management.

Then there’s Devon, the personal trainer at her gym. Arrogant and abrasive, he’s the last guy she should ever find attractive, but she has a hopeless crush on him anyway, and he doesn’t seem entirely disinterested either. In fact, sometimes he’s downright sweet to her. If only he weren’t an untamable bad boy who uses and dumps women like they’re nothing. Though Lizzie’s friends warn her to stay away, he’s the only person who can create what she needs: a safe space. But is there any way she can break him of his years' long habit of being a user?

“I’ve never dated anyone so…” I really shouldn’t have said that, I think. This is Devon, and he is only a part time friend. Ten minute from now he’ll be a jerk once more.

   “Sure you haven’t.” He snorts.

I shake my head and direct my gaze at the mops leaned against the far wall.

   “Wait, seriously?”

“Can we talk about something else?”

“No way. How is that possible?”

“I’m, you know… only nineteen.” That just makes it sound worse. Someone could make a comedy skit out of this dialogue. “And I work 24/7/365. I never had the time.” That’s easier to admit than that no one’s ever shown real interest. I’ve been hit on, of course, and had fans propose to me and all that, but none of the tiny group of guys whom I’ve actually gotten to know has ever seemed to see me that way.

“And for your show you’re gonna have to get your sexy on,” he says.

“Right. At least the show will be entertaining for you. And just think of how much money you can make selling that little detail about me to the tabloids.”

“You should be more worried about me telling the world that you don’t warm up enough before your workouts and your form on the weight machines is way off.”

Not his usual kind of joke. That one had a real, malicious bite to it.

   “I’m being a jerk, aren’t I?” he says.

   “Yes.”

“Sorry.” I hear his clothes rustle as he moves again, and I startle when he slides right next to me against the wall. Our arms touch from shoulder to elbow. “I wasn’t well socialized as a small child,” he says.

   “Obviously.”

“Hey, I really am sorry. I just… most of the time I have no idea what to say to you.”
  “Then don’t say anything.”

  “Okay…”

I sense this hurt him, though, so I look sidelong at his profile. “You got a problem with leaving me alone?”

He raises his eyebrow, looks down at me, and reaches out to touch my face.

EXCERPT

I push through the glass doors and step out onto the asphalt of the parking lot, right into Madison. I put my hands up to shield myself and she does an awkward sidestep to avoid collision.

For a moment we just stare at each other and I lower my hands slowly, unsure of what to say.

“Sorry,” is what she says. Those pale eyes of hers stay fixed on my face. Her hair’s still a little damp from the shower and the smell of her herbal shampoo perfumes the air. Those lips of hers are a soft pink and shine from a fresh application of lip gloss, and she scowls a little, like she always does when unhappy.

“No,” I say, “my fault. I didn’t look.”
  She bites her lip.

Standing this close, she’s irresistible. I want, so badly, to put my arms around her. What’s worse is that encounters like this will happen, and keep happening as long as we both live in town.

She drops her gaze to the pavement.

Yeah, this isn’t working. “Can we talk?” I ask.

A wordless nod is her only reply and we turn and walk back towards her subdivision.

I touch her arm to make her look up at me, then regret it. Even just a touch sends electricity up my arm. “I’m sorry, okay? For ending things the way I did.”

“You sure there’s no chance for us?”

   “I’m sorry.”

“How can you just throw away the last three years? I mean, that’s it? You’re not interested, end of story? I’ve waited two years for you, and it’s like you don’t even care.” At least she’s angry and not sad.

This is torture. My body aches, physically, for the feel of her. I want to taste those lips and run my fingers through her hair and feel the cool dampness of each strand. I want to take her home and see if I remember how to kiss her neck so gently that she tips her head back, eyes closed, surrendering to my touch.

Alex, I think, quit it. Not appropriate. I stop and turn.

She locks her gaze with mine. “I want to be with you. There’s no one else I’ve ever felt this way about.”

It feels natural to step in for a hug, but I stop myself and clench my fists instead. “I’m an unemployed high school dropout with a psychotic disorder. You can do better. In fact, it’d be hard for you to do worse.”

 “But-”

“I never wanted to lose you, but there’s nothing I can really do about that. You’re out of my league.”

“We could try to work things out,” she pleads.

“All the trying in the world won’t change my condition.” And with that, I hit the limits of my control. I’m being gazed at by the love of my life and I need to get out of here. Worse, I sense the voices jabbering away on their plane of existence, and I have to remind myself, they don’t have any plane of existence. They don’t exist. Here I go again, though. I wonder how long I have until my next breakdown.

Like I said, I always knew I wasn’t the greatest guy, but walking away from Madison feels like a new low for me. I try to hold onto the thought that I’m doing this for her.

Anger rushes in my ears like a windstorm. Any second I expect to hear her run after me and feel her hand on my wrist or shoulder, but that never comes. I make it to the corner of Main Street and Ridge Road, and when I look, no one is behind me, which makes me even angrier, even though I know that’s not fair.

COURTNEY REVIEWS: CASTLES ON THE SAND (SHATTERED CASTLES) BY E.M. TIPPETTS

Castles on the Sand (Shattered Castles, #1)Series: Shattered Castles #1
Category/Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Publisher: Self-Published
Publication Date: 8/17/13
Format: ebook
Source: Received from author for review
"A fast-paced blend of high-stakes drama and average teenage concerns (sex, appearance, friends), capped with a welcome message of hope." ~Kirkus Reviews

If there’s one thing Madison Lukas understands, it’s pain. The pain she feels when her mother ignores her completely. The pain her best friend endures as her parents starve her as punishment. The pain of a dangerous boy whose mother has to be carried away by law enforcement on a regular basis.

She gets it. She feels the pain of others as if it were her own.

But when a mysterious man claiming to be her long lost brother appears with promises of relieving her suffering, trusting him could reveal more truths than Madison is ready for. Because the truth can hurt, too.

Madison lives her life second best to her best friend Kailie, invisible in the same house as her mother, and in an overall state of severely low self esteem in that she thinks of herself as fat and pasty. The story is completely from her point of view, but chronicles her experiences navigating mean girls at school and the joys of first kisses and first dates. Throw in public humiliation and a long lost brother she didn't know she had and you're in for an emotional ride.

Starting with her brother John, I thought that part of the story was going to be the main focus and I was so wrong. He is on his Mission as a part of the Mormon Church and has spent a great deal of time searching for his sister, who he hasn't seen for 15 years. He throws the big brother card around early, and I was glad to see something that would get a real emotion out of Madison. This girl is so downtrodden by everyone around her that I was sad for her, but also so mad at her that she wouldn't just stand up for herself. She thought what she should say, and not to rock the boat wouldn't actually say it. Which brings us to the boys.

Jean-Pierre is the popular guy at school and wants a physical relationship with her on the DL....next....if only! She likes how he makes her feel, but made her feel guilty for not being ready to do more like he was. And that is not okay with me. Cue more anger. Carson is the opposite but puts down her choices, whether it be for kissing JP (thanks to small town gossip that will live on forever) or who she has as friends. Dude needed to get a clue. If he's already telling you what to do and you're not officially dating him, don't date him! Alex is one of those strong silent types. He's in trouble a lot, but still tries to do his best taking care of his mentally ill mother. Another thing you'll learn about this small town is they're not all that understanding of people who are different. I liked Alex the most just because he would simply talk to her with no agenda, or judgments. Friends first type of relationship building are a joy to read for me, so I liked this even though Madison didn't give him a chance for almost forever.

So boy drama was heavy, but it was nothing, and I mean nothing compared to the mama and BFF drama that was in store. Her mother stays focused on her pottery and is so distant they're almost not on the same planet. She literally cuts her off in the middle of a sentence and would be "oh, well I'm going to bed." and just walk away and close and lock her door. What was that about? That plot is slow and gives out information even slower, so don't expect them to be winning mother/daughter duo of the year anytime soon or to let you in on why her mom treats her this way until the end. Equally crazy behavior comes from her best friend Kailie. This is the real kicker of the story, and I cannot risk spoiling it. Trust me when I say you don't want to miss this book because some cray cray stuff goes down between those two and I was so surprised. Heavy, but thought provoking in a way I wasn't counting on.

Castles on the Sand is one of those books that makes you feel. I went through the gamut of emotions early but mostly I felt mad and frustrated at how Madison is treated by the people she is close to. I really hated her mom and her best friend Kailie for, I would guess, at least 75% of the book, maybe longer. Teenage years are hard, but when you don't have your mother or a good girlfriend on your side to get through it, it can be even tougher. Madison has to dig deep time and time again to prove what she is made of and surprisingly I always rooted for her, even when I wanted to help her wake up from her nightmare because she didn't seem to be doing much but treading water. Take a chance on this one, and I think you'll enjoy it too. It's one of those raw, real to life stories that you know could have or is happening to someone you love.

"So how was your day?" I quip.
"Fine - oh I see. It does just roll off the tongue automatically, doesn't it?" ~ 29%
