Max Crawford has reached the point in life where he's starting to think about settling down. Unfortunately, he's always been a little awkward when it comes to social interactions, and working from home doesn't help. He spends so much time alone, painting beautiful, historically accurate model trains that half of Whitford has begun to joke that he may be a serial killer. Not exactly prime husband material.Tori Burns has found happiness in Maine, thanks in large part to her shifts at the Trailside Diner. She likes the work, and she loves the local gossip. When shy, geeky Max Crawford becomes a regular, she's intrigued. When she finds out he's in the market for a wife, she's fascinated…and determined to help.Molding Max into every woman's dream turns out to be much easier than expected. But has Tori's plan worked a little too well? As she turns his comfortable life all sorts of upside down, she'll have to find a way to show just how she's fallen for him…the real him.

My Review

Falling For Max is my first step into the Kowalski Family series. I have to admit that at nine books deep, it's a bit daunting! I know a lot of readers who adore this series, set in small town Maine. I enjoy big small-town series as well, even more when there is a center like the Kowalskis.

I'm going to admit straightaway that I did find the large cast of supporting characters in Falling For Max to be a bit overwhelming. The author did a very good job of briefly conveying which couples were paired together and how they all interconnected. I still struggled to keep everyone straight, but that's on me. Since I had to connect the dots so often, I did have a harder time connecting to the characters. Looking back, if you're a reader who needs to know those connections, I would probably suggest not jumping in at book nine.

That aside, I found Falling For Max to be a very sweet, very straightforward romance. Max Crawford was an interesting romantic lead, not one I encounter often. Whereas a lot of leading men are self-assured and not looking for love, Max was shy, a bit of a loner, and ready to settle down. I found his organization, over-analytical thoughts, and always logical answers to be cute, at least on paper. It's no exaggeration to say that Max was awkward, but he was also really endearing. And apparently hot.

So Max is in search of a lady, but doesn't know how to land one. That's where Tori Burns comes into the story. Tori is a graphic designer (mostly book covers, yay!) who fills in at the local diner in an effort to socialize. Okay, I don't know that I bought that. If I'm going to socialize it's going to be over food and drinks that I'm not serving. But hey, I'm notoriously lazy. Tori and Max form a sweet, honest friendship and she agrees to help him find a date. But it's not going to be her since she has parent issues and professes she will never settle down.

Of course, we all know this means that Tori and Max will probably fall in love while she's helping him find all the right moves. And that's where my straightforward romance assessment comes in. Falling For Max has a fairly linear plot, with no surprises jumping out to change the course. It was sweet and very slightly spicy in the romance department. If you're okay with that, seek the comfort of a sweet, easy romance, then this will likely fit the bill.

When Rory Macintosh’s roommates find out that their studious and shy friend has never been with a guy, they decide that, as an act of kindness they’ll help her lose her virginity by hiring confident, tattooed bad boy Tyler Mann to do the job…unbeknownst to Rory.

Tyler knows he’s not good enough for Rory. She’s smart, doctor smart, while he’s barely scraping by at his EMT program, hoping to pull his younger brothers out of the hell their druggy mother has left them in. But he can’t seem to stay away from her, and even when Rory knows she should push him away, something about him makes it nearly impossible for her to resist--even though her heart is at stake...

Torn between common sense and desire, the two find themselves caught up in a passionate relationship. But when Tyler’s broken family threatens to destroy his future, and hers, Rory will need to decide whether to cut her ties to his risky world or follow her heart, no matter what the cost…

My Review

Because I'm literally the last of my close friends to read True, I'm going to be brief.

Now that I've read two books in the True Believers series, I will say that it is a fantastic series. No hesitation. I love that True was more than it seems from the description, that it wasn't simply the story of the bad boy and the virgin. It wasn't a sexual awakening or frivolous at all. True is a love story, pure and simple, of a two people who are near opposites, but fit together so very perfectly.

Tyler and Rory were not one-dimensional characters, defined by the sexuality or social standing. They both held many layers, and that complexity really bonded me to both. Tyler grew up in such turmoil, and works so hard to keep his brothers together. He wants more out of life, but doesn't know that he'll ever get it. Tyler has a tough exterior, but is vulnerable with Rory. He's cocky, yet not really conceited. He was brave, yet scared to give his heart to a woman whom he deems too good for him. I loved that he loved Rory exactly as she was.

Though I couldn't find any of myself in Rory, I connected with her deeply. I would say that is testament to McCarthy's ability to bring these characters off the page, make me love them. Rory was...she was just Rory. Logical to a fault, quiet and unassuming, always withholding herself and her emotions. I loved who Rory became with Tyler. That she wasn't afraid to push him, question him, and love him. Once Rory decided to open up to Tyler, it was like she became a better version of herself. She was still way literal, but she also joked more. Hugged more, allowed people to truly know her.

Oh gosh, I sound like a sap. And I am one when it comes to books such as this. I think what I love about this series is that it is just so real. The characters don't come packaged with the right words or decisions, they mess up and they grovel and they learn and grow. That sort of experience is what I love so much about reading.

There was a moment in True that struck me hard, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's when Tyler and Rory are discussing Streetcar Named Desire, and Rory just can't understand why these characters are behaving so illogically...

"If they would just communicate with each other, they could resolve all their issues in ten minutes."
"That's what makes the book so realistic," he told me dryly. "Real people don't discuss this shit with each other."
He had a point. I didn't really discuss my emotions with anyone either. I had spent most of my life being a silent observer. "Oh."
In one fell swoop, I got it. Literature wasn't intended to be about perfect people, it was about flaws, very real and very deep human flaws.

That is an excellent reminder, I think.

If you're looking for a deep, intense, sexy and fun New Adult series, True Believers is, without a doubt, one of my favorites.

Favorite Quotes

I smiled. I couldn't help it. There was something really charming about him, I had to admit. It was like he knew exactly who he was, and he wasn't afraid to show himself to anyone. And while, yes, he was the bad boy who smoked and was tatted up and wouldn't hesitate to punch someone in the face, he also liked to read. I admired that.

I kissed him. I closed my eyes and guided my mouth up to his, pouring all of my emotions into the touch. I wanted him to understand that I understood, that I thought he was amazing for the way he dealt with his life. That the fact that he still found reasons to grin and laugh were testament to his true nature, that his desire to take care of his brothers spoke volumes about his character.

...I wasn't sure what to say, but for the first time, I realized that words don't always tell everything. That my fingers brushing across his hip, my lips caressing his jaw, could speak for me.
"I don't ever want to be with anyone but you," he murmured into my hair, kissing my temple.
I could feel my smile in the dark. "Are we Facebook official then?"
"We're more than that. We're the real deal."
  "True. We are."

Tyler had been right. I hadn't understood then that love and passion weren't logical, that you could stand outside and observe and say that someone was behaving ridiculously, but that when you were the one in the room, nothing made sense but the volcano of emotion that erupted when you were with your lover.

When post-grad Rachael Hamilton accidentally gatecrashes a pro-athlete party, she ends up face-to-face with Ryan Carter, the NFL’s most beloved quarterback.

While most girls would be thrilled to meet the attractive young millionaire, Rachael would rather spend time with books than at sporting events, and she has more important things to worry about than romance. Like her parents pressuring her to leave her unpaid publishing internship for law school. Or her brother, who’s obliviously dating Rachael’s high school bully. Or that same high school’s upcoming reunion.

Still, when Ryan’s rookie teammate attaches himself to Rachael, she ends up cohosting Friday night dinners for half a dozen football players.

Over pancake brunches, charity galas, and Alexander the Great Rachael realizes all the judgments she’d made about Ryan are wrong. But how can a Midwestern Irish-Catholic jock with commitment problems and an artsy, gun-shy Jewish New Englander ever forge a partnership? Rachael must let down her barriers if she wants real love–even if that opens her up to pain that could send her back into her emotional shell forever.

My Review

After reading Imaginary Lines and falling completely in love with The New York Leopards series, I was so pumped to start Rush Me. Despite reading the last book first (as I'm prone to doing) and knowing how the characters end up, I wanted to know how they earn their happy ending. Given how loving and sweet Abe from Imaginary Lines was, I kind of expected the same thing out of Ryan Carter. Boy, was I wrong, but that's okay.

Ryan Carter is a veteran quarterback for the New York Leopards. Because he's a famous athlete in the one of the world's largest cities, Ryan is a bit jaded when it comes to women and relationships. When he accidentally meets Rachael Hamilton (nothing says awkward like stumbling into a bj session), who's most undecidedly not impressed by his celebrity status, Ryan is at first disbelieving, but then becomes intrigued. Rachael grew up with her face in a book, she doesn't notice athletes and assumes their all dumb jocks. After repeatedly insulting Ryan, who isn't quite sure she's not being coy and trying to manipulate him, writes him off as someone she could never take seriously.

A series of coincidences, along with some really adorable teammates (especially Abe) keep Ryan and Rachael in each other's orbits. As they get to know one another, the two begin to see the real person behind that façade. Ryan is defensive and a bit insecure. Rachael can be really patronizing when it comes to athletics, not impressed by his money and refuses to let him treat her. All of this has him convinced that she believes he's not good enough for her. As for Rachael, she just doesn't see how the famous Ryan Carter, who's dated supermodels, could ever be seriously interested in her. These two had a hard road, and I won't lie, they frustrated me to the max. BUT. I love that Parr made these two into complicated, layered characters who had to learn to trust each other, and know that the other was for real. That frustration, the build-up, made the happy ending all the more worth it.

Loving this series!

As though he could read my thoughts, he smiled in satisfaction. Or maybe my face held no originality compared to all the others he had read. I thought, why not? We were alone. He didn't know that I didn't do one-night stands, that I didn't care for frat-boy jock types, that I wasn't that girl. And he was beautiful, and I was lonely, and maybe, just briefly, I could let down my walls and be carefree and reckless and young.

He met my gaze, his bright and unflinching, a lake in August, sky at dawn, and my heart pitter-pattered. "Is this a game?"
Shocked, I shook my head. "No. No, not at all."
He let out a breath. Behind him, the guests moved slowly, a blurred sea of wool and sold, black and jewel tones. Ryan stood out, the one note of reality in the wash of strangers. "Because I don't think I could deal with that."

Ryan smiled a little tightly. "Hey."
Andi, never known for tact, spoke loudly, as though she was double-checking. "Ryan Carter. The football player."
"Yeah." He kept the syllable short, and his eyes sought mine.
I leaned into him. "He's also a very talented crayon cartographer, punster, and he makes mean French toast."

Natalie Sullivan is on the verge of a breakthrough most archaeology grad students only dream of: discovering a lost city. Her research points to a farm in Ireland, but to excavate she needs permission from the new owner: the Michael O'Connor, popular NFL running back.
On TV Mike seems so charming and good-natured that Natalie figures getting his cooperation will be a breeze. So she's not prepared to deal with the arrogant—and adamantly opposed—man she meets in person. Or the way one look from him sends shivers down her spine…
Determined to kick-start her career, Natalie travels across the Atlantic and finds herself sharing an inn with Mike, who has come to Ireland in search of his roots. She tells herself her interest is strictly professional, but the more she gets to know him, the harder it is to deny her personal attraction to the sexy sports star. And when Mike confides why he refuses to allow the dig, Natalie must decide if she can follow her heart without losing sight of her dreams.

My Review

After enjoying the glimpses of charming Mike O'Connor in both Rush Me and Imaginary Lines, I was pretty excited to read his book. I just knew I would continue to love the red-headed, Irish-American running back. I did, but Mike also surprised me with the man behind the smile and easy-going nature. Running Back turned out to be quite different than the other books in the series, but I enjoyed it.

What really surprised me was how little the story revolves around Mike's team. This makes sense since it's the off-season and a huge part of the story involves the land Mike and his sisters inherit in Ireland. Land Natalie Sullivan wants to excavate in search of a rumored lost city. After a series of awkward, tense encounters about the excavation (a given, in this series), Natalie heads to Ireland in hopes of talking Mike into letting her team move forward with their plans.

As Natalie comes to know the land and the people of the land, she begins to fall in love, not only with her dream of a lost city, but of this place, exactly as it is. She also begins to fall in love with Mike, in Ireland for his uncle's funeral and to reconnect with his family. Natalie's feelings do not go unrequited. In fact, Mike O'Connor falls even harder with the determined, brilliant Natalie. The two have (spoiler alert!) issues, to navigate while falling in love. Mike's involve his family's troubled, secret history, and how he's run away from the issues for so many years. Natalie's skeptical about love, knows two people can fall for each other, but believes it never lasts. This belief in the fleeting nature of love has lead Natalie to a life of wandering, running from true connections. Mike wants make her believe in their love, and to take the beautiful life that's within her grasp. Oh...I loved, loved the ending to Running Back, full of swoons and smiles.

It's a struggle, Natalie's journey is very inward-focusing and what I love to see for women of her age in novels. Once again, we have a New York Leopard who knows who he want, what he wants. We have a young woman working her way through the world, looking for happiness and learning to see it, accept it.

I'm so happy I finally gave this series a try. If you're looking for a sports romance series with players who are even bigger heroes off the field than on, New York Leopards will fill that spot.

If I pulled up just the smallest bit, if I pushed up on my toes... I kissed him. His mouth moved against mine with the ease of long familiarity, as though we’d been kissing for years, as though this was a kiss that had been and would always be part of who we were.
I could have stayed there forever, with the wind, the waves, the sun, Mike’s lips moving against mine.

He kissed me. His hands slid along my back, pressing me closer and his tongue met mine in a slow, perfect dance and I no longer cared what was right, who we were. Not tonight, with a dome of fast stars blazing far above us. Not here, on this portal into a different world, a different reality, one that was just us and warmth and beauty.  I wanted to have him, for him to have me, to belong to each other here in this wild land on the edge of the world. So I packed my reasons for coming to Ireland away in a little box at the back of my mind, and when he lay down on the cold hard stone, I followed.

"Mike. Michael O’Connor. I love you. When I hold objects from thousands of years ago, I get this feeling, this glow that spreads through my chest and warms spots I didn’t know were cold, that makes me smile without realizing it—and it is nothing compared to how I feel around you."

He lowered so his forehead rested against mine. In the shadows of our faces his eyes gleamed like amber. "You are not broken. You are not too much work. And I believe that we will be together until I die. I believe it enough for the both of us."
  "That's too heavy," I whispered.
"Then I will change your mind. I will stay with you, and love you, until you know that this is not going to change, that we will not fizzle, that we are every single chemical out there and that they are bound together so tightly that they will keep us warm."

Ella Mayhew's always appreciated the beautiful view of Seneca Lake from the spa window of her family's hotel. But the view improves dramatically when a hot stranger runs across the grounds—shirtless. He's the first man to kickstart her hormones in the three years since she lost her parents, and she doesn't even know his name.

Graydon Locke's on his umpteenth undercover assignment. The routine's always the same: assess a business, recommend it for closure, then roll out before anyone discovers his decisions impact hundreds of lives. He's always believed nothing good comes out of small towns. Why would this one be different? Then he makes two classic rookie mistakes—falling for the sweet, sexy girl who owns the very business he's on the verge of axing. And letting the town's residents get involved in both his life, and his relationship with Ella.

Ella's the best thing to ever happen to Gray, but he's lied to her from the start. If he pulls the plug on Mayhew Manor, the entire town may crumble. Ella couldn't save her parents, but it's up to her to save their hotel. Even if that means turning her back on true love.

Review

After being practically driven out of town because of his father's actions, corporate hitman Graydon Locke loathes small towns. It doesn't matter how quaint, how heartwarming the town is, he wants no part. On assignment in upstate New York, Gray is undercover in the small town of Seneca Lake. He's there to learn about Mayhew Manor, specifically whether the company he works for should take it over. His first day there, though, Gray meets Ella, "just Ella", and is instantly taken with the pretty, witty massage therapist. The two quickly become close, knowing that their romance will only last as long as Gray's in town. That attraction continues to flame, and when Gray learns that "just Ella" is actually Ella Mayhew, the owner, it's too late to control the fall-out.

Relationships formed under deception are always iffy for me. The premise is kind of great, and I love the conflict it creates. But I always have to worry if the powerful man will, in fact, help destroys his woman's business. This has actually caused many books and movies to completely lose me. I don't care how charming Tom Hanks was in You've Got Mail, he helped close Meg Ryan's business, and peeps, that ain't cool. Though this remains a question throughout Up to Me, I was still heavily invested in the story, assuming that a trusted romance author wouldn't do me that way.

I was heavily invested in Up to Me because of the characters. I just couldn't help but like Ella and Gray. Ella is a woman who's struggling to keep her family's business afloat, and working to move forward in her life. Three years prior, Ella's parents were killed -in front of her- in a tragic accident. Due to conflicts in her future, she and her parents had a bit of a temporary strain in their relationship, and Ella feels responsibility. Because she feels her bad choices caused the accident, Ella consults "the journal" when she needs to make decisions. I'm not going to go into details on the journal, but I loved this touch to the story! The people of Seneca Lake lifted her up in her time of need and sorrow, and the kinship she feels with the community was very sweet.

Despite his duplicity, I really liked Gray as well. Gray is a man with a complicated background, not one of his doing but one he's paid for regardless. He's in an awful position with Ella and his job, one he never intended to start. I actually felt sorry for Gray, knowing that he wants to help Ella, keep his job and support the one person he feels obligated to. He keeps his head and his integrity in this crazy situation, even though he feels enormous pressure from all sides. And oh, he does know how to make a woman melt.

Of course, you know the big reveal is always around the corner, and when it did, I felt like my heart was in my stomach. The author did a nice job of making me feel equal sympathy for both parties. The fall-out was ugly, and I had no idea how the issues would be resolved in a way that felt believable to me. A good hero needs to grovel when he's done wrong, needs to earn his way back into good graces. I will say that I came out of Up to Me with a smile and iPad intact.

Up to Me is a good start to the Shore Secrets series. Given that there are several interesting characters, we have great potential for the future stories. I'm crossing my fingers that Ward and Piper are up next!

There it was--the matching hunger, the naked lust. Ella wrapped her legs tight around his waist and entangled her fingers in his hair. Wished with all her might that there weren't two layers of clothes between all their body parts, which were currently touching.
Ripping his mouth away, Gray growled against her neck. "You brought a match to a bonfire. You ready to burn up?
  "Too late. I already am."

[...] Then he cradled her face, broad thumbs tracing the line of her cheekbones.
"You're the one who's smooth. Ella, you smooth over all the cracks in my heart. Filling in spaces I didn't even know I still cared about. Thank you."

Tamar Rosenfeld has been in love with New York Leopards linebacker Abraham Krasner since they were twelve years old. She'd always considered it destiny that they'd end up together…until Abe was drafted and she professed her feelings in a moment of blind excitement. The sting of his rejection was like nothing she'd ever felt before, and it's nothing she'll ever forget.Older and wiser, Tamar has landed a dream job as a reporter for one of New York's premier athletic websites. Determined to stop being the safe, boring girl she's felt like for most of her life, Tamar makes a list of all the things she wants to do and see in her new city, and Getting Over Abraham is priority number one.But destiny has finally chosen to interfere. Just as Tamar's decided to move on, Abe's realized she's the only woman for him. When he confides the truth, Tamar has to decide if she can put her crush behind her, or take a chance on the very man who's been holding her back all these years.

The New York Leopards series has been on my radar for awhile now, thanks to a recommendation by my very picky cousin/librarian, and the endorsement of our book group. All the ladies are in agreement that this is a great series. I haven't read the first two books, yet, but I can safely say that based on Imaginary Lines, I completely agree.

Tamar Rosenfeld has been in love with Abraham Krasner for nearly half her life. A friend when she needed one, a crush that seemingly went unrequited, Tamar saved herself for years, hoping Abe would see that she was in love with him, and realize he felt the same way. One reckless confession four years ago crossed an imaginary line in their friendship, and Tamar vowed to move on, to finally put Abe behind her and move on. BUT, four years have passed and now Tamar is moving to New York to work as a sports writer. Her assigned team is the New York Leopards (fictional, which kinda threw me, but okay!) and guess who's the team's star linebacker...yep, Abe!

Tamar wants to be close with Abe again. At the heart of it, they were dear friends and she misses him. And yet, she must be careful with her heart. At nineteen and twenty, Abe didn't want her love. He was moving cross-country and joining the NFL. He didn't know who he was yet, knew Tamar needed time to find herself, and the timing was just so wrong. Now though, Abe wants Tamar in his life. He's solid, and happy with his friends and his team, but it's clear he's missed her, that Tamar represents a comfort he craves. And what's so neat about this whole relationship is, Tamar believes Abe holds all the power, he will break her heart eventually. Throughout the story, though, Abe gives these small cues, a lot of which Tamar misses or misunderstands (oh, but I did not!) that let us know that he's really in this. And when he finally begins to tell Tamar want he wants, how he feels, and how he has hoped and planned over the years? Guys, my heart started thumping so hard. I love a strong hero, an honorable one, but when that strong man lets the heroine see how vulnerable she makes him, how she could bring him to his knees and tear his world apart with one word? THAT is what makes me go weak for a romantic lead. Nothing shows strength like exposing what could destroy you. And that is what had me reeling over a Imaginary Lines.

Okay. So I did not mean to go on and on, recapping the story and what I thought, but I just really want to talk about why I loved Imaginary Lines. And to be general and vague was not going to cut it for me. I needed to thoroughly explain why I found T and A's (Hee! Nailed it.) relationship to be special among the millions of romances out there.

I also need to point out that I genuinely enjoy Allison Parr's voice. She gave the story a lot of passion and emotion but avoided being too flowery. Librarian Cousin (as she will forevermore be known) assures me that Parr is a completely solid writer and she does not hesitate to buy her books. Also, you might pick up that Tamar and Abe are Jewish. I loved seeing the tidbits about the food they ate, their family histories and customs. This is another reason I am happy with the series. I love to find more diverse backgrounds/religion/ethnicities in my books. The book world sadly tends to reflect the small town I grew up in in the rural south, almost all white Protestants. I mean, until I started reading heavy duty WWII romances set in Europe, everything I knew about Jewish people, I learned from Adam Sandler and The Hannukah Song. And yeah, that funny but also a bit sad.

Imaginary Lines was an excellent story, even better than I'd hoped for. I'm excited to find a new-to-me author and series I can whole-heartedly recommend. And I look forward to reading the rest of the New York Leopards series.

Favorite Quotes

He didn't look away from me, and desire and determination in his gaze was overwhelming. "Just try to fall in love with someone else while I'm around."

He smiled with absolute tenderness and shook his. "You don't get it, do you?"
  I was lost. "Get what?"
He hooked one arm around my waist and drew me toward him.
"Tamar." He leaned his forehead against mine and smiled. His other hand cupped the back of my neck. "Tamar, you were always the girl I wanted to marry."

  "And what about me?"
I blinked at him. "Excuse me?"
"You think you're the only one that would get your heart broken?" His hand slid around the back of my neck. "So I have the power to break your heart. Good. Because you could smash mine to smithereens if you wanted to."
Something soft and happy unfolded in my chest even as my lips parted slightly in surprise. "Abraham..."
He pressed me against the car and kissed me.
"I'm not going to break your heart," I whispered. "I promise."
"Good. Because I don't think I could survive it."

My Teaser

I'd forgotten how good he was at always looking me in the eyes when he spoke. "I'm glad you moved to New York."
  "And why's that?"
  "You feel like home."
Warmth bloomed in my chest, born of nostalgia and truth and familiarity. "You feel like home, too."

Aww...you guys, I really loved this book! My review posts on Friday, so be sure to come back and check it out.

Ryan Lucas would rather be anywhere but Ransom Creek, Connecticut. After losing his high-adrenaline career as a Hollywood stunt driver, he's had to tuck his tail between his legs and take up employment as a chauffeur for the Montgomerys, a wealthy hotelier family.

Amy Sanders has returned home to Ransom Creek to take over her mother's former position as nanny to the Montgomerys—bringing her close to dashing Jake Montgomery once again. She grew up with a major crush on Jake, and it's not easy to leave those feelings behind, even though her friendship with the hard-edged family chauffeur, Ryan, has a sizzling undercurrent of undeniable attraction.

Amy's determined to prove to Ryan that life at Montgomery Manor isn't all bad, but each time they draw closer Jake swoops in. Amy is torn between two men—and two worlds. And Ryan is rapidly coming to learn that if he wants to make Amy his, he'll have to prove to her that life downstairs can be everything they both want

From the moment I saw If I Stay, I've been anxious to read it. Tamara Morgan is an author whose work has come highly recommended to me. As much as I anticipated this book, though, I had a hard time connecting with it. To be honest, I can't even pinpoint why that is. I don't think it was a mood issue, because I was anxious to dig in. I liked the cover, the premise. It could be that the story felt as if it were opening mid-scene. I didn't know these characters, but felt as though I were meant to. I did get my bearings on the "who's" and "what's" after just a bit, but never felt that I settled into the story.

I did like Ryan and Amy, and sympathized with what brought them to Montgomery Manor. They were both kind and yearning towards one another. Amy was a sweetheart, very plucky (never thought I'd say that word). Ryan was a bit aloof and gruff, but melted a but for Amy's charms. They both had interesting backgrounds, and I liked that the story explored where they came from, why they landed at Montgomery Manor, and what they wanted from life beyond there.

If I Stay seems to set up for a love triangle in the beginning, but didn't push it heavily. For those who're triangle averse, there's no contest between Ryan and Jake.  Jake is never a serious, or even minor contender for Amy's heart. He was such a sleeze, but eventually became sort of endearing. The plot focused more on Amy's connection to the Montgomerys and Ryan's longing to return to his former career. Their story had a very nice resolution.

Despite my lack of overwhelming enthusiasm for If I Stay, it was a nice story. I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving it a try.

He was lucky to be around people who cared enough to change their plans to suit his weaknesses. Luckier to have a job. Even luckier still to be alive. That had to count for something.
One of these days, he'd figure out what.

After a night-shift shooting of a drug dealer in The Coffee Cave, twelve strangers each walk out with more than $100,000 in dirty money, a pact never to meet again, and the chance to start over…

Until that night, Sasha "Sugar" Kovac spent her days selling coffee to the co-eds at ASU Rio Verde and her nights trying not to run back to her ex… or join the throngs of girls lusting after her friend, Adam.

But why should Sugar give in to the Harley-riding tattoo artist when his longest relationships haven't lasted more than a weekend?

Sugar's life takes a turn for the dangerous when someone comes looking for the people connected to the Cave shooting and the cash they split. To protect herself and those she cares about, Sugar has to get out of town–and fast. When Adam insists on coming with her, Sugar finds herself holed up in a tiny house with a hot man, a stash of cash, and a lot of secrets.

Can Sugar protect both her life and her heart when temptation is so close? Or is the past she's fled going to catch up with her?

Unfiltered and Unlawful has one of the greatest opening lines I've read:

First there was sex, and then came death. I just had no idea that the two were so tangled together until everything fell apart so spectacularly.

Reminds me of a recurring nightmare I used to have, about accidentally killing someone, then covering it up despite logic. Then I just waited for the boom. To be caught and punished.

So when an obviously bad dude is killed while assaulting Sasha, all those present agree to cover it up. I could understand why Sasha wanted to, and even Jess, but why I really didn't understand why everyone else went along with this insane plan. The cover-up was rushed (one of the involved happened to have access to a family-owned crematorium. Convenient.) But. Each subsequent installment apparently follows another character. Given that each played a different role in the cover-up. I assume the details will gradually be filled in.

Unfiltered and Unlawful had an almost-cinematic feel to it. With it's unique concept and very morally-compromised characters, I could absolutely see it being a gritty indie film.

I do have the next installment, and plan to read it eventually. While I can't say it inspires urgency, I am curious about what happens next.

Favorite Quotes

"I like that you look." His eyes swept me from top to bottom slowly. "I look at you, too. I have for a long time."

When Adam walked out of the bathroom, he looked like an invitation to all the sins I wanted to commit.

About the authors
Tamara MorganTamara Morgan is a contemporary romance author of humorous, heartfelt stories with flawed heroes and heroines designed to get your hackles up and make your heart melt. Her long-lived affinity for romance novels survived a B.A. degree in English Literature, after which time she discovered it was much more fun to create stories than analyze the life out of them.

Whether building Victorian dollhouses, consuming mass quantities of coffee and wine, or crying over cheesy 1950s musicals, Tamara commits to her flaws like every good heroine should. She lives in the Inland Northwest with her husband, daughter, and variety of household pets and only occasionally complains about the weather.

Payge GalvinPayge Galvin has always wanted to be a writer. She also loves spending time with her friends, so after a few cosmos at the pool with her besties, the idea for her new series UNFILTERED was born. Together the group wrote twelve books about twelve strangers who share a dark secret. . . and who all want to find love—because, really, who doesn't?
