JESSICA REVIEWS: HEARTSTRINGS by HEATHER GUNTER

Heartstrings (Love Notes, #2)Series: Love Notes #2
Category/Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Self-Published
Publication Date: 7/31/13
Source: Purchase

Everyone thinks of me as this happy and upbeat person. What they don't know is that I carry a deep, dark secret. Something horrible happened to me a year ago, and I have kept it quiet all this time. I was fine for a while, but somehow it’s chosen this time to come back, and it's eating at me--like a cancer.

I need to tell someone about it, I just don't know how. I'm pushing everyone I love away, including my mom and my best friend Charlie.

Then there is Will. Handsome, sweet Will. We went out on a date a while back, but then the incident happened leaving me crushed and him confused.

How do you tell someone you care about all of your secrets, and will they still want you when the truth comes out?

I realize, in this exact moment, I can’t do this anymore; I’m sick of crying and feeling scared. I’m tired of feeling broken, and accept there are things that have to happen if I’m going to get any better and put this behind me. I have to move on. Not for anyone else; for me.

***Heads up guys: this will be a bit spoilery. I don’t mean to make it that way but I really, REALLY want to talk about how wonderful this book is and the only way I can do it is by going full force with my gushing which will most likely give away some parts of the story. You know I don’t do play-by-play of books only gut reactions. With all that said, let’s proceed***

Physically and emotionally in pain, I realize how ostracizing this experience was: you can only understand if it’s happened to you. And it’s a feeling I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Things were done to me that night that had never been done before and I will never, ever forget, and I’ve never told a soul.

There are strong women and then there are STRONG women, women that have dealt with some of the worst circumstances in life. You see them walk down street, attend school, go into work, shop at the nearest mall or just pick up their mail from their mailbox. But what you don’t see is that some of these women have some of the deepest and darkest of secrets, secrets that take up their minds, their hearts and sometimes even their souls. Some of these women have been able to deal with these secrets but then there are those that have no idea where to even start with dealing with their inner demons. And Tori, our lead female character, is one of these women. (I say woman for two reasons: one is because technically at eighteen, you are considered an adult and two because with what we are about to talk about, and the circumstances, there was no choice in the growing up process)

“Mom, I don’t want to be a victim, and I certainly don’t want to be his. I am nobody’s victim!”
“You, my girl, are a survivor, and you will get through this because you are mine and you are strong as hell. You have a fire in you that nobody can ever put out, unless you let them, and don’t ever let anyone put out that fire.”

As you can tell from some of my quotes, Tori was a victim of sexual abuse, rape to be exact. It’s a hard word to say but its truth and sometimes truth is hard to say. It was hard for Tori to say even though she knew what had happened to her but just couldn’t come to terms with saying it out loud. You get a glimpse of her in Charlie and Maverick’s book (LOVE NOTES) and get that there is something not right. That as feisty and as ‘mouthy’ as Tori is, something horrific must have happened to her to distant herself. She especially distances herself from her other best friend, Will, who wonders what she is hiding behind those green eyes of hers.

“Please tell her I’ll always be here for her, in any capacity, and, and, I’ve never stopped caring for her, even from a distance.”

Let me take a moment to praise the glories that is Will Montgomery. After reading this book, I could not stop thinking about Will. Yes what happened to Tori was horrific and unthinkable and no woman should go through that, but there is sometimes little said about the male support system behind the victim. “I think sometimes we can’t always heal by ourselves, and sometimes the person who we are most scared to tell is the one person who can actually help us heal.” You see, Will has been one of Tori’s best friends and has loved her unconditionally from a distance. He sees HER and only her and no one else measures up to her feistiness or her fire or her beauty. Even when she tells him what had happened to her a year ago, nothing changes for him. On the contrary, he loves her more. He sees what a fighter she is. “You are the bravest girl I know.” He loves her and nothing else will change that. He is there for Tori when she most needs him and feels safe and comforted knowing that not only does she have her mother and best friend/sister support but she also has the support of Will.

Will is the kind of man that should I ever have a daughter or when my goddaughter grows up and finds herself a boyfriend/husband, that he be like Will. Will by no means is perfect but he is what every mother looks for her daughter, what a sister looks for her sister, what a grandmother is looking for her granddaughter and so on. He makes mistakes like every person on this earth but owns up to it and learns from those mistakes. But what makes him so wonderful is the deep LOVE that he gives to that one significant person. When he loves, he loves unconditionally and with full force. He is your support system, the shoulder to cry on, the arms that you fall asleep in and know that you feel safe in them. He is all in with his heart and soul, and that is sometimes rare to find.

Sidenote: thank you Ms. Gunter for not making Will Montgomery a man whoring, alcohol guzzling, reformed delinquent. He could have easily have slept himself around the school and screwed anything that two legs and a skirt while waiting for Tori, but he didn’t. He stayed true to his character. Even the simplicity of a kiss was a big deal and I am so glad that he was man enough to give her space and time for when that big moment came. (I was listening to Lady Antebellum’s “Just a Kiss” when I was writing this review and it me made think about Tori and Will. You will see why a simple kiss is such a huge step for both of them) “I’ve never stopped caring about you, not even from a distance.” (I loved the quote so much I wanted to put it in twice in my review) For once I am okay with the male lead not being a tattooed bad boy. Sometimes you really just need a sweet, kind hearted boy to make you swoon and daydream. And thank you for those funny moments of “guy talk” between Will and Maverick:

“Dude, you really should listen to me more, I’m usually right.”
"Yeah, whatever. Actually, isn’t it usually me instilling the words of wisdom? Somehow the roles have been reversed. I don’t know how that happened!”
“It’s the girls. They screw with our brain so we can’t think straight, and when you find the right one, all rational thoughts gets flushed down the toilet.”
“Isn’t that the truth.”

I had mentioned before that there are strong women and that there are STRONG women. One of these women is the author herself. You will know by the end of the book JUST how strong she is and how very brave she is to come forth with this story. It is said that the authors put themselves into their characters and THIS is the epitome of that. You see, this is Ms. Gunter’s story told in Tori’s (and Will’s) POV. It’s not a 100% true but the premise of her story told in HEARTSTRINGS. I may have given a lot away in this review, hell in this paragraph alone, but I could not NOT mention just how wonderful the author is to tell this story, her story. I applaud her for writing this and letting the world know. Her story impacted me: I laughed, I cried, I got mad, I had to stop reading. I don’t cry. I mean, I almost NEVER cry, heart of stone over here, but reading this book made me just cry huge alligator tears and made me love each and every character. I would recommend this book to everyone, female or male, young or old. It’s a wonderful read. Just have wine, tissues, ice cream or whatever makes me feel better after a few tears.

I leave you with my all-time favorite quote moment in the book:

Tears pour down, and I can’t stop them. My legs turn to jelly, unable to hold my body up any longer, and I crumble as the warm water cascades over me. As several thoughts run through my mind, I lean my head back and just let the water fall, washing all my tears down the drain. Symbolically, the tears wash away all the ugly, damaged feelings I allowed him to hold over me. Negative words tumble through my head and I send them down the drain with my tears. Nothingness. Victim. Powerless. Scared. Used. And many, many more. I let it all go and watch them flow down the drain. I thought I was doing so much better, and in a way I was, but I hadn’t let go. I need to let it all go, and refuse to give someone the power to make me feel like I’m nothing ever again. I am so much more. I say it in my head, again and again, until I finally begin to believe it then I say once more, out loud: “My name is Tori. I am no one’s victim. And by God, I am a survivor! I’ve been to hell and back and I. Will. Heal. I may never forget; but I will never again think about you like I have. I will never give you the power I’ve been giving you for the last year, and I will never let you hurt anyone else again.”

My name is Tori, and I’m a survivor.

EXCERPT

“Are you sure this is the right house? Looks empty.”

I say breaking the silence between us. He lets go of my hand and peeks through the window on the door. There’s obviously nobody here. It’s dark as hell in there.

“Shit. They told me to come a long time ago; I guess I took too long. I’m sorry; I thought for sure I would be able to turn your early night into a long one.”

He says turning around to face me.

I can see his eyes now because of the light on the back porch and they look like sapphire blue…just deep blue eyes that are intense and intimidating. It seems as though he can see right through me with those piercing eyes of his so I get fidgety again. He obviously knows I’m staring at him. God, I have to get away from this guy, I am a blabbering and fidgety idiot in front of him. I don’t know how much more I can embarrass myself.

“No biggie. This is actually the most fun I’ve had all night, so I should be thanking you, Jason…uh....Jason..?” I ask because I want to know his last name to make sure I stalk him on the internet. Wow I’m a tool.

“Roberts. Jason Roberts” He responds with a smirk.

“Well Jason Roberts. Would you like to walk me to my dorm room so that I can start my early night?”

I say with a voice that’s supposed to be flirty but I think sounds more like I’m a nervous wreck, which I am, but he doesn’t have to know that. I look down at my feet because that was the worst attempt at flirting.

I feel the intensity of his eyes on me “of course, Alexandra….Alexandra….uh…?”

I look up at his smiling face “Angel…Alex Angel”

I return his smile.

“Nice. Interesting name. I like it, Alexandra Angel…shall we?”

About the author:
I was born in Honduras but raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin from a very early age. I went to St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI before joining the U.S. Navy in 2006. After my short career in the military, I got married and started having kids. I have two munchkins now J I’ve been a stay at home mom for a couple of years.

This past Christmas, my husband got a Nook Color as a gift and he never got to use it because it was always glued to my hands. I never liked reading but once I picked up that Nook—I was addicted. So I’ve read a TON of books and it’s become my getaway. I started writing as a hobby but after I finished Stay, my husband encouraged me to get out there…so here I am. I love listening to music and find it inspirational and I think that it goes hand in hand with writing.

{BLOG TOUR} HALE MAREE by MISTY PROVENCHER (Review, Excerpt, and Giveaway)

Welcome to The Bookish Babe's stop on the Hale Maree Blog Tour! I am so, so excited to have been asked to take part in this tour. My stop includes my review of Hale Maree, tour-wide Giveaway, along with a teaser from Misty's upcoming book, Mercy. You can find the complete tour schedule here.

Hale MareeSeries:
Publisher: Misty Provencher
Publication Date: 11/19/12
Format: eARC
Pages: 190
Source: Received from author for review.

GENRE: ADULT CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
Please be advised that this book is NOT suitable for Young Adult readers due to language and explicit sexual situations.

Hale Simmons dreams of climbing out of her impoverished life, going to college, and getting herself a titanium crash helmet, so she can eventually bust through the Plexiglas ceiling of her crappy life. But for now, she’s just a 18-year-old girl with a flimsy hope, barely getting by with her alcoholic father, Jerry.
But for Hale, ‘crappy’ suddenly takes a nosedive, when Jerry becomes the sole witness to a horrible accident. It is an event which means to effect everyone, especially Hale, who wasn’t even involved.
While the depth of the accident has just begun to unfold, Otto Maree, a prominent business man and old family friend, stands to lose everything because of it. Otto is desperate for Hale’s father to stay quiet about what occurred the night the two men met for a drink. Out of mutual moments of desperation, the two fathers forge a deal. Jerry is desperate to gain financial stability for both himself and Hale, and Otto Maree is more than willing to pay to keep his secret just that.
But deals like this need to be made of the strongest vows and bound with the most faithful of loyalties. Otto proposes a marriage between Hale and his playboy-son, Oscar, in order to assure that the secret remains ‘in the family’. The mystery surrounding the accident continues to grow and Hale struggles against her own mysterious feelings that begin to develop for Oscar, who turns out to less of a playboy, but just as fiercely loyal and dedicated as his father.
As the pressure around her continues to escalate, Hale realizes that she’s got to decide if this arranged marriage is really just a big mistake or an amazing twist of fate that has been waiting around for this particular accident to happen.

A fun, romantic, and emotional story of a couple who get pushed into the "deep end" of love.

Hale Maree is a story I'd been looking forward to reading from the moment I read the synopsis. Seriously, an arranged marriage in the US in 2012? I was so curious to meet heroine Hale Simmons (love that name!) and sexy playboy Oscar.

It's not often that you find a contemporary story with an "arranged marriage" plotline. I, for one, was very intrigued, and I wondered how in the world Provencher would make this work. But if there's one thing that you learn about her writing after reading the Keystone series, it's that Provencher always covers all her plot bases. As I read the story, I would stop to ask "Well, what about...?", and within moments, that question was being explained. The reason Hale's and Oscar's fathers need them to get married actually makes a lot of sense. I appreciate that we aren't just given this crazy, outlandish reason and are forced to swallow it.

Besides the arranged marriage, I also had reservations about Hale and Oscar. If they jumped into the situation with both feet, eager and happy, I would have found the whole thing unbelievable. If they both acted hatefully towards one another because of their unhappiness over a situation neither can control, I would have likely found them irritating. Though Oscar and Hale are thrown into this awkward/insane situation, Provencher really takes her time with the build-up between the characters. More than anything, this story is the slow, sweet creation of the relationship between Hale and Oscar.

Hale is understandably upset. She feels as if her father has basically sold her out. She doesn't know what is expected of her. She's confused, upset, and angry. I love that Hale realizes that Oscar isn't to blame, and that she doesn't place it with him. But, Hale does not make it easy for Oscar. He must work, be patient to earn her trust. You really see the fun side, and get some insight into Hale's thoughts when she talks with her best friend, Sher. And I want to just say now, I would so be down with a story about Sher.

Oscar was nearly pitch perfect as the resigned son who wants to protect his father. Oscar isn't exactly happy about the situation, but he is decidedly optimistic. It's almost as if you can sense in him that he feels instantly drawn to Hale, and will do whatever it takes to make her happy with the situation. Oscar treats Hale like a skittish colt, slowly draws her in and earns her trust. I loved that he was kind, thoughtful, and gentle with Hale. But wow, when Oscar turns up the heat, look out! That boy is smokin'. Hale Maree had loads of sensual, steamy moments, slowly building up to a hot, hot, hot scene that makes me want to knock out my ceiling and put in skylights. Nicely done.

Hale Maree was ultimately a fun story that kept me reeled in until the very end. It was so funny at moments, dangerously alluring and surprising mysterious. Hale Maree is a great choice if you're looking for a romance that's out-of-the norm, and gets it done right.

Edited to add: I have come across several comments about the cover of Hale Maree that mention how thin the cover model looks. I actually never thought anything about it, other than "Oh hey, I love how her veil is blowing to the side!" In the story, Hale is a petite young woman. There are a lot of women out there who are naturally very thin. Many, some whom I have known personally, were taunted and made to feel ugly and ashamed. Many are as hurt/offended about comments about their looks as an overweight woman does. I think most of us would agree that commenting that the cover model could stand to lose a few pounds would be cruel, and would never do that. Be kind.

Favorite Quote:

"I would notice you, Hale," he continues, "if you walked into a room behind a 500 pound lion that was charging straight for me. I would notice you if the room were full of naked women, and I was in deep conversation about my own death. I will always come running, I'll eat the dinner and wear the shirts and I've already thought that if you put on ten more pounds, it'd be a sure bet that I would never let you out of my bed. I've been trying to soak up every word you've said since the first time we spoke, so I think it's only fair that you try just as hard to hear me now. I think you are perfect for me, Hale, and I'm just waiting for you to realize that I'm perfect for you too."  (33%)

"Oh my God, you're getting married! I'm going to be your bridesmaid! I can't believe it!" Sher's screaming. She's so excited that I was to just float along on the whole fairy tale with her.
"Nice, bestie," I mumble at her, trying to press down my smile. "Whose friend are you anyway?"
"Yours!" she squeals. "And his!" I think I love him already!"
Oscar struts across the room. "My mission here is complete," he says, as he reaches the top of the stairs. He flashes me the peace sign."Ocker, out."   (41%)

"Will you?" Oscar asks again, removing the ring. He takes my hand, and slips the ring onto my finger. "Say yes. Please, Hale. Not just because we're supposed to, but because you think you might actually love me."   (65%)

And now, an excerpt from Misty's next book, Mercy, A Gargoyle Story.
Mercy, A Gargoyle StoryMy will to survive is the first thing to drown.

I know, because I hold it under myself.

After facing severe tragedy in life, Madeline assumes her death will be easy.

But the angels do not come to take her to Heaven.

Instead, what retrieves her is something she never expected: a gargoyle.

Delivered to Truce, the King of the Gargoyles, Madeline now has choices she never wanted.  She has the ability to take over the entire Gargoyle Kingdom, if she is willing to kill the king.  However, looking to prevent takeover, Truce transforms Madeline, thereby granting her the ability to achieve the thing she wants most—death—if she can just find the human recipient for the Gargoyle Gift that she now has to give.  It should be easy.

But lives, whether they are lived or not, are seldom simple, and Madeline’s past still stands in her way. Now, only a voyeur in the life of The Boy with the Golden Rod Voice, Madeline’s must reconcile her own life and death, if she ever hopes to have free reign of her soul.

"It was a clear decline, Moaguza,” Truce says, but the gargoyle growls again.
"Let the darling steep," the gargoyle hisses.  "Have it’s chances against your tongue.  Time to choose once it knows it’s choices.  And if the choice does not want what I need, then I will labor on, my King, in your perilous fate."
"Fair enough, but of the temptation," Truce says,  "we may be able to have this temptation, without change to our path.”
“That is not a choice.  You do not want what you need," the gargoyle whines.  “You must give the choices.”
“With one concession, then.  Let's see what becomes of it in good form, shall we?”
"It can not bring wanting.  Unfair.  Unfair!”
"I continue to disagree, yet there is nothing we can do, to prove which of us is right, aside from testing the theory.  I cannot remove the desire, but we shall test the wanting.  Get to your wings, Moag."
The gargoyle groans, but it stands.  The thing spreads its emaciated bat wings against the sky, until the entire, eroding turret is eclipsed in its shadow.
"Ready?" the King asks, but his tone leaves no room for dispute.
"Yes," the gargoyle grumbles.  Truce holds both hands toward me, palms out, and the underside of his silver-ensconced fingers wink and slither.  He keeps his head down.
"Rot!" he roars, and at the same moment, the gargoyle's fierce wings give a hard downbeat, as its claws snatch me off the castle top and carry me away once more.

{MINI-REVIEWS} SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL,DITCHED

I've started making the time to read more "me" books. The books that I've purchased or received and am reading without any pressure to review. But, I'm a bit spastic when it comes to not writing up a review, so I'm going to post several mini-reviews from time to time. They're not actually "reviews", but more a summary of my thoughts/feelings.

Something Like NormalSeries: Stand alone
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Publication Date: June 19, 2012
Format: Hardcover
Pages: 214
Source: Personal Purchase

When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero.

In short, Something Like Normal is easily one of the best books I've ever read. A book that makes me want to look at most other books and say "Nice try. Better luck next time."

Something Like Normal is one of the most raw and unflinchingly honest books I've ever read. Travis Stephensen is a boy struggling to hold himself together in the aftermath of losing his best friend in the war. He's struggling with grief and guilt. Travis may have survived, but in some respects, every soldier is a casualty to war.

There's not really much I can say about this book that I feel hasn't already been said by other reviewers. The story was quietly devastating. Doller did a remarkable job at laying out Travis' emotional devastation, piece by piece. It was a privilege to watch this young man slowly unravel, then knit himself back together again (with help from the perfectly written Harper).I don't know about anyone else's feelings, but for me, Something Like Normal is a love letter to all the Travis' out there. All those boys, and women, who do the very best they can, and unfailingly search for their new normal.

Something Like Normal is just an amazing book, written by an amazing author and you should just go ahead and do yourself the favor of reading it.

Favorite Quote:

"No matter how rough my dad was on me, or how hard things got in boot camp, or how scared I was in Afghanistan, I never cried. Ever. And I know I should be embarrassed, but this is Harper, who doesn't try to tell me everything is going to be okay. She stands there and keeps me from drowning." (pg 187)

Ditched: A Love Story
Series: N/A
Genre: Contemporary YA
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Publication Date: 1/10/
Format: Hardcover
Pages:  277

THERE'S A GIRL.
Justina Griffith was never the girl who dreamed of going to prom. Designer dresses and strappy heels? Not her thing. That said, she never expected her best friend, Ian Clark, to ask her.

AND THERE'S A BOY.
Ian, who always passed her the baseball bat, handle first.

Ian, who knew exactly when she needed red licorice.

Ian, who promised her the most amazing night at prom.

THEN THERE'S A DITCH.
But when Justina is ditched, figuratively and literally, she must piece together--stain-by-stain on her thrift store dress--exactly how she ended up dateless...with only the help of some opinionated ladies at the 7-Eleven.

To get the whole store, Justina will have to face the boy who ditched her. Can losing out at her prom ultimately lead to finding true love?
My reading Ditched was fate. Never in my life have I found a heroine who I could identify with as much as Justina Griffith.  Ditched is told in pieces as Justina works out how things went from so potentially epic to so epically awful to the ladies at the 7-Eleven. Some might say that the craziness  Justina stumbles through is a stretch of reality. I say it is possible, and I lived it.

Here's the dealio: Teenage Andrea was just like Justina in every way imaginable. Justina has a low-blood sugar, and becomes cranky and irrational when she goes too long without food. Let's just say that my hubby compares me to the Incredible Hulk when I get hungry. I cry and make weird frantic gestures. Justina and her best friend Hailey are kissing addicts. They love kissing boys for fun and keeping count. My high school bestie and I were also kissing addicts. I think we finally stopped tallying kisses at around boy number fifty, when we became slightly ashamed. Another way I was like Justina: Horrific Prom Night from HELL, complete with a ripped zipper? Yep, and I even told my boyfriend I'd meet him after, but ended up hanging out with my friends and other boys, NO kissing involved. I had not one but TWO horrible Prom Nights, one that I included a boy shoving shortcake in my friend's face during the meal. I hate Prom.

Like Justina, I was clueless when it came to guys liking me. There are several boys who years later told me I was blind to every signal they threw my way. I'm convinced that the only reason I ever ended up dating my husband was the fact that he locked me in a car and asked me, point blank, to be his girlfriend. Seriously, he had to get drunk to find the courage to propose! So yeah, I can say from first-hand experience that girls like Justina exist, and if we're lucky, we find boys like Ian. Patient, thoughtful and immune to the insanity, boys like Ian Clarke make girls like Justina Stop...Take a Breath...and Fall in Love.

There is a paragraph in Ditched that I wish every person who's never found The One to read:

"It's true. I'm not that girl anymore. And there will be a time when I'll be The Girl. It is all about timing--and one day when I'm not planning it, and organizing it and strangling it, love will become possible. There won't be any more leapfrogging. We'll land in the exact spot at the same precise moment. And I will wait." (pg.268)

Sidenote: Any book/author that includes John Hughes in their Acknowledgements is a book/author that must be read.

Ditched is hysterically funny, surprisingly thoughtful, and infinitely delightful.

Favorite Quotes:

"My chest heaved and my heart jumped out of my chest, cannonball-style. All I could think about was throwing something at her---something made of glass. Or spikes. Or a viral disease. They really should invent Herpes In A Jar for moments like these."   (pg.112)

"But what I loved most about our friendship was the way he said my name...always dripping with adoration. And annoyance. I had always figured that's what had drawn Ian to me. My adorably low tolerance for PMS mixed with my all-black wardrobe. It was sexy to him.
  Probably."   (pg. 196)

{REVIEW} JUST FOR NOW (SEA BREEZE #4) by ABBI GLINES

Just for Now (Sea Breeze #4)
Series: Sea Breeze #4
Genre: New Adult
Publisher: Abbi Glines
Publication Date: 10/30/12
Format: eARC
Source: Received from author for review.

The day Preston Drake figured out that wealthy women paid well for a set of tight abs and a pretty face his life turned around.

The run down rat-infested trailer he had shared with his alcoholic mother and three younger siblings was now only a place he visited to pay the bills and stock the pantry with food.

He no longer worried about his family starving or living without electricity. The money he made entertaining rich older women more than covered his family’s needs and his own. He had it all figured out. Except…

There was this girl.

She was as innocent as he was tainted.

Amanda Hardy wished her knees didn’t get weak when Preston walked into a room. She hated the fact her heart raced when he flashed his smile in her direction. He had a different girl in his bed every night. He was the kind of boy a smart girl ran from. So, why was she coming up with ways to get close to him? Even when it was obvious he wanted to keep her at a distance.

Maybe her heart knew something the world didn’t. Maybe Preston Drake was more than just a pretty face.

"Ohhhh, Preston. Come here you sexy bitch." <----- Those may or may not have been the words that passed my lips when I began reading Just For Now. You see, I've known Preston Drake for quite some time now, but I was oh so ready to know him better. Since we first met him, in Breathe, Preston has been known as a guy who knows his way around the ladies, to put it mildly. He has a fondness for all the beautiful girls, but especially when they have a nice pair of legs attached. That's not usually too big of a problem for Preston, until those legs belong to his best friend's little sister, Amanda Hardy.

Amanda Hardy is sweet girl that I've been looking forward to knowing better. She's always been in the background of the series, Marcus' little sister, Sadie's best friend. But now Manda is all grown up, and she is hopelessly infatuated with Preston Drake. Manda's no fool, though, because she knows how Preston operates, and she's willing to take the risk. She can see through Preston's sleazy ways, to the good guy beneath the swagger. But Preston has bigger issues than she can even imagine, and when the horrible truth comes out, Manda will have to decide if she can look past his tragic life and the decision it forced upon him. Can she accept, forgive, and find love with this beautiful boy?

Preston and Amanda made a gorgeous, super steamy, and fun couple. The attraction between them is fierce, and hot. I loved that Amanda is actually the aggressor in the relationship. I love that she made the moves, refused to give up on what she wanted. And heaven help me, I was happy that the steam is delivered quickly. I have to say, Abbi knows how to write some hot Southern boys. The way they talk and behave is so realistic, intense, and hot. Believe me when I say that I spent a fair amount of the time fanning myself while reading Just For Now.

Just For Now...Tore. Me. Up. If you are a fan of the series, and you read the blurb, you know that Preston and Amanda spell Big Trouble. Preston is the guy who has always been around for a good time. The guy who is always commenting on how hot the chicks are, is referred to by his friends as a man whore. And there's Amanda, the sweet little sister who has had a crush on Preston for years, and is finally ready to act on it. Then you have Marcus, the ultimate big brother who will kill anyone who tries to use or hurt his baby sister. So obviously I was anticipating a ton of drama revolving around the forbidden love. The drama was delivered, and it was gooood.

I love Abbi Glines. I love Abbi Glines' books. I love the characters, the stories, the drama, the tears and the steam. I love that she can take these characters, write these simple yet heartfelt stories for them, and cause me to feel SO MUCH. I can't tell you how many times I have stayed up until the 3am reading her books. Oh wait, yes I can! That would be every single book. Everything about Abbi's books appeals to my heart and makes her one of my very favorite authors and I will forever be hopelessly devoted.

Just For Now is a perfect addition to the Sea Breeze series. Each time Abbi releases a new Sea Breeze book, I think "This is her best yet. She can't possibly top this one." But she does, every time. Just For Now is Just Perfect.

Favorite Quote:

" 'I'll be good. I promise. I'll be the best damn friend you'v ever had.' His voice had lowered to a husky whisper. I shivered from the sexy sound.
'Mmmm, I'm gonna have to work on that. Feeling you shiver. I like it. I'm gonna want to feel it more.'
I swallowed hard and tried to control the emotion in my voice. 'Friends don't get this close, Preston,' I said and started to take a step back when he pulled me tightly against him.
'No, Manda, they don't. But I can't stop from wanting you close. Can we be close friends?' "      (eARC, pg 47)

"She was tired of this. I couldn't blame her. I wasn't worth the hassle. I could never be what she wanted. She thought I was like Cage and the right girl could tame me. It wasn't about that. I didn't need to be tamed. I needed to be f*cking saved."  (eARC, pg 59)

"I wouldn't cry over her. I wouldn't. I never had her, not really. She didn't know me. She'd never accept the truth about me. It was better this way. Pretending like I could have her in any way was just a form of torture I didn't need. I had my family and my baseball careet to focus on. Amanda Hardy was a distraction that could make me lose it all."  (eARC, pg 60)

Okay maybe she needs to keep her imagination focused on her writing only. In the real world, Abbi can be found hauling kids (several who seem to show up that don’t belong to her) to all their social events, hiding under the covers with her MacBook in hopes her husband won’t catch her watching Buffy on Netflix again, and sneaking off to Barnes and Noble to spend hours lost in the yummy goodness of books. {BLOG TOUR} LOSING IT by CORA CARMACK

Welcome to The Bookish Babe's stop on the Losing It Blog Tour! The tour is being hosted by the lovely girls over at YA Sisterhood. You can find the complete tour schedule here. My stop includes my review and the tour giveaway!

Virginity.

Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible-- a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if if that weren't embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She'd left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.

Why I Chose to Read Losing It: I admit, the cover totally caught my eye. Also, when I saw the girls over at YA Sisterhood talking about Losing It, I was intrigued. Add in the fantastic blurb and there ya go. I was hooked!

Charming. I found Losing It to be such a charming, light-hearted, yet thoughtful story that left me smiling from beginning to end.

Bliss is a college senior who's decided that it's time to give up her V-Card. It's not that she's saving herself for marriage, it's just something that hasn't happened. When her friend drags her to a bar to find a one-night hook-up, Bliss is resigned to go along with the plan. When she meets Garrick, though, it seems that Bliss just might accomplish her mission, with someone she could easily fall for. With the end in sight, Bliss panics and leaves the poor guy all alone, in her apartment. And try as she may, Garrick can't be avoided because he's her new professor. In an awkward, sweet dance of attraction and friendship, Bliss must determine whether she wants to pursue a relationship with Garrick despite the rules; and whether she's up for losing her virginity at all.

So, Bliss and Garrick. I don't even know where to start with these two impossibly sweet, endearing characters. Bliss is someone most of us can relate to. She enjoys college life, her friends, learning. She is awkward when she's nervous, and it always leads to hilarious situations. I love that she wasn't a simplistic, one-dimensional girl and I will admit, I was a little worried that she would be written as a young woman who is swept along by a guy, convinced by him that she needs to give it up. Yes, she is innocent in a way, but she's not some naive girl who is clueless and needs a "big experienced hottie" to show her what she's been missing. Bliss knows herself and is fully aware of what she wants and needs. She is passionate, reckless when it comes to Garrick. And best of all, she isn't satisfied with anything less than what she needs emotionally. And good gosh, this girl truly knows how to "awkward up" any situation. Loved. Her.

As for Garrick....*deep breath* Whoa. Not only is he a truly handsome guy, describe much as he's portrayed on the cover, but...HE'S BRITISH. I know, right? Give me a truly nice, handsome guy and I'm hooked; throw in a sexy accent and I'm a Goner. Now I know that some may be worried about Garrick because he is technically Bliss' professor, but believe me, there's nothing sketchy about him. Remember the very first episode of Grey's Anatomy, when Meredith finds out she slept with her new boss, Derek? This is kind of the same situation we're dealing with, and look who well that worked out for Meredith and McDreamy. Losing It is not the story of Bliss running away from Garrick and him spending the entire time chasing her, trying to convince her to give it up. Garrick is a supportive friend, advisor, he cares about what she wants and needs. He is a boy, willing to wait for a girl, and I loved him for it.

I would like to take a moment to talk about the cover of Losing It. As I said above, I like it. A lot. To me, it looks like two beautiful people, lost in a moment. But I have come across a remarks, one here at my own blog, in which people talk about the "male domination". I don't see that, at all. In fact, the cover doesn't even look like one whole picture, but actually two separate ones. I guess my point is, don't look for something that's not there, folks.

In terms of Contemporary New Adult Romance, Losing It is about as good as it gets. It delivers smart, funny, and engaging characters, a story that will make you laugh and cry and swoon, and provides for some very thoughtful moments. I couldn't put it down until I reached the happy ending (gah, no pun intended). Losing It is Bliss' story of a girl Finding Herself.

Favorite Quote:

"I was acutely aware of the fact that he was kissing me in the middle of a bar, until he nipped at my bottom lip. Then I forgot about everything but him. My whole body shuddered, and my heart dropped toward my stomach like the force of gravity had doubled. My head was swimming, but I didn't care. I opened my mouth, and immediately his tongue swept in, taking control. My hands clutched at his back, and in response, he pulled me closer. His hand slid up the back of my shirt- hot fingers pressed into my already heated flesh." (eARC, pg 17)

{COVER REVEAL} JUST FOR NOW by ABBI GLINES

Happy Day, Y'all! I'm here to help you start the week off right. I have an awesome cover reveal to share with you today.  Abbi Glines, much to my delighted surprise, is writing a new Sea Breeze book. This story centers around Preston, Marcus' buddy, and Amanda, his sister! Cue the indignation! I can't wait to see how ol' Marcus handles this doozy of a story.

So here it is, the cover reveal of Just For Now...

Expected Release Date: October 23, 2012.

Isn't that the sweetest cover?! I would be lying if I said my first thought wasn't about how gorgeous that model's body is. And dang, Preston has good hair.

The cover was designed by Stephanie Mooney of Mooney Designs and the reveal was organized and hosted by AToMR Book Tours.

But wait! I know you want to watch the book trailer, right? It was created by Hellion Works and it rocks!

Okay, folks, there you have it. I don't know about you, but I am DYING for this book! Be sure to add Just For Now to your to-read list.

GUEST POST and GIVEAWAY ~ JAYE FRANCES, AUTHOR OF 'THE POSSIBILITIES OF AMY'

Today I have a guest at the blog that I'm pretty excited about. Author Jaye Frances recently contacted me about reviewing her book, The Possibilites of Amy, and the premise instantly hooked me. I knew that my schedule would keep me from reviewing the book right away,  but didn't want the readers to miss out on the book. So today I have a very insightful guest post from Jaye, an excerpt from The Possiblities of Amy and a giveaway! So let's get to it!

The Possibilities of AmySeries: Stand-alone
Publisher: Self-Published
Publication Date: March 17, 2012
Amy is the ultimate trophy girl—gorgeous face, killer body, and a vivacious personality. But there’s something else about her, something that makes her even more special. Amy is new. A transfer student from out of state, she’s starting her senior year without knowing a soul. And that means she’s up for grabs, available.

Infatuated from the moment he sees her, David is determined to meet Amy, and if the fates are willing, to spend the rest of his life with her. But his shyness prevents him from approaching her—until his friends devise a contest to determine who will be the first to prove their manhood by seducing her. This coming-of-age story about high school romance is best suited for an older YA/New-Adult or Adult reader, and contains some mature language.

Thank you, Andrea, for hosting me today on The Bookish Babe with my New-Adult romance novella, The Possibilities of Amy.

Even as a mature, sexually-active woman, I’ll be the first one to admit that I miss the old days, when a car date provided the ultimate playground for my burgeoning high school libido, and the suggestion of a drive-in movie sent tingles down my spine—and sometimes further. Even before entering the hallowed ground of the bumpy parking lot—presided over by a five-story outdoor screen—I would fantasize about cuddling next to a dreamy guy with nothing but a layer or two of flimsy fabric between us.

I always envisioned a big tub of buttered popcorn and a large Coke as part of the dating ritual. And after feeding each other the greasy kernels, and tasting each other’s tongue on a shared straw, I would wonder how long it would take for the windows to fog, secretly hoping that the natural veil of privacy would induce a mutual lack of interest with the events taking place on the screen.

When I was writing The Possibilities of Amy, all of those memories came flooding back, and I realized the story would be much more interesting if I put myself into the male mind of one of those guys who was hoping for more than holding hands and a good night kiss.
I hope you enjoy the following excerpt as the main character, Dave, and the girl he’s infatuated with, Amy, get to know each other at a drive-in movie.

Here’s an excerpt:

The lines at the snack bar were short, and as always, it was apparent who had dates and who didn’t. There was a certain stance, a look of confidence when ordering for two. Those with dates patiently waited in line, nodding to each other, silently acknowledging others of their own kind, their behavior separating them from the conspicuous stags that shuffled back and forth, desperately searching for someone they knew.

In minutes, I was stuffing a tub of popcorn and two sodas into a pop-out cardboard tray, the paper cups giving off little blackboard squeaks as I twisted them in tight.

As I walked back through the incandescent twilight, the rise and fall of the aisle humps forced me to slow down to keep the drinks in balance. I hesitated as I approached each new row of cars, ready to steer away from those that were familiar. I didn’t want any friendly interruptions or unexpected visitors.

I remembered how a few hours earlier—just before leaving to pick up Amy—I had practiced holding her, wrapping my arms around empty space, imagining how her body would feel next to mine.

I spotted the Falcon, and inside, Amy’s shadowy form still hovering on the passenger side of the car. She recognized me, gave a little wave and scooted over to open my door.

  “Was it crowded?”

  “Not really.”

She reached out with both hands, taking the popcorn and one of the drinks. Tossing the cardboard tray to the ground, I balanced the other soda in one hand and turned sideways, wedging myself back into the seat.

What happened next was so unexpected, yet so welcome, I instinctively knew I would hold the memory of that moment for the rest of my life.

There, on my glorious, factory-installed, green vinyl bench seat, Amy had left just enough room for me to squeeze in and shut the door. I slid in beside her like the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle, feeling the razor sharp exhilaration that comes from the first touch of a woman’s body.

"Am I crowding you?” she asked.

    "No, you’re fine. Perfect.”

She was more than perfect, better than fine. With her body pressed against me, I was acutely aware of the shapely contours of her breasts, her narrow waist, the seductive curve of her hips and the muscles in her thighs. I could feel a stray wisp of her hair teasing the back of my neck, and with each breath, I could smell the clean, unmistakable scent of lilac soap.

I looked toward heaven and offered a quick prayer of thanks. Maybe I would give up cursing, or jack-off only every other day. Surely I could give up cursing.

    “Open up,” she commanded.

    "What?”

    "Open your legs a little.”

  I did it without thinking.

"We need a place for this.” She wedged the tub of popcorn between my thighs. Shoving a straw through the plastic lid of her drink, she jousted with the ice cubes, then held it up to my mouth.

Without hesitation, I took it between my lips and sucked until I tasted the sweet liquid. She waited for me to release, then brought it to her own lips. The translucent paper tube darkened as she filled her mouth. We were sharing fluids, from the common end of a straw.

She reached down, digging into the popcorn. I could feel the movement of her fingers through the side of the container.

She brought several kernels to my mouth. As I parted my lips, she gently placed them inside, her fingertips lingering on my tongue. I sucked on the oily corn, believing I could discern the taste of her skin from the slick greasy coating.

Had something happened while I was at the snack bar? Had someone recognized my car and stopped to chat, assuring her that I would never take advantage of the unwilling?

It didn’t matter. I wasn’t going to question my good fortune, and I pretended there was nothing unusual about a beautiful girl feeding me with bare fingers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Holy cow! I loved that excerpt. I have a feeling I will be reading The Possiblities of Amy even sooner than I'd hoped. But you don't have to wait. Jaye is giving one lucky reader the chance to win an ebook (Kindle) of The Possibilities of Amy.
