Winner Bakes All was a really sweet, fun book with positive messages. I intended to read this with my seven year old son, but he's decided girls are gross. *sigh* I have an almost five-year old daughter who actually said she wants to be a "cupcake baker" when she grows up, but she's not quite ready for a book of this size. So I ended up reading Winner Bakes All on my own, but that was fine because I found it to be a great story for kids.
The story follows Sadie, one of the founders of Peace, Love, Cupcakes. Sadie's family is having a tough time financially, and it's causing a strain on her parents' relationship. Sadie wants to help, so she and her friends enter a baking competition to win the much needed prize money. The girls run into many obstacles throughout the story, but their spirit and determination never stops. As a parent, I found it very interesting, and important, that the story touched on the topic of the stresses that hit parents, often affect their children. I remember this as a kid, and I often don't even realize that my own kids pick up on even the slightest nonverbal cues. This was a great reminder to me that, even if I don't want my kids to feel my stress, they will, and it's a natural part of life. What is important is how you let it effect you. So that, in combination with the spirit of the story, being never give up, made this book really shine for me.
I won't lie, I was in this for the cupcakes. Just reading the descriptions made my mouth water! I loved that the book also includes recipes for some of the cupcakes mentioned in the story.
Winner Bakes All is a very positive, but also fun, story for kids.
