From the USA Today bestselling author of True, Sweet, and Believe comes a tantalizing New Adult novel about finding love in the most unexpected ways…

Kylie Warner prides herself on being optimistic, but after finding her best friend in bed with her boyfriend and flunking chemistry, her upbeat attitude has taken a dive. Even an impromptu hook-up with her sexy new chemistry tutor only brightens her mood slightly. After all, it’s not like she’ll ever see the tattooed scholar again…

While he’s a whiz at complex equations, Jonathon Kadisch has trouble when it comes to figuring out women. So when Kylie tells him that she’s pregnant after their night of passion, he’s at a complete loss. He’s prepared to be a good father—unlike his own deadbeat dad—but he’s less prepared to fall for the genuine and alluring blonde bearing his child.

With emotions running high, Kylie wonders if Jonathon’s devotion is out of growing love or looming obligation. And when heartbreak threatens to tear them apart, Jonathon will have to fight for the only girl who’s ever made him feel whole…

Why I'm Waiting ~  The True Believers series is by far one of my favorite NA series, or any series for that matter. I love the realness of the characters and their situations, and the thoughtfulness McCarthy infuses into every story. I actually have a copy of Shatter and am counting down the minutes until I open it!

Max Crawford has reached the point in life where he's starting to think about settling down. Unfortunately, he's always been a little awkward when it comes to social interactions, and working from home doesn't help. He spends so much time alone, painting beautiful, historically accurate model trains that half of Whitford has begun to joke that he may be a serial killer. Not exactly prime husband material.Tori Burns has found happiness in Maine, thanks in large part to her shifts at the Trailside Diner. She likes the work, and she loves the local gossip. When shy, geeky Max Crawford becomes a regular, she's intrigued. When she finds out he's in the market for a wife, she's fascinated…and determined to help.Molding Max into every woman's dream turns out to be much easier than expected. But has Tori's plan worked a little too well? As she turns his comfortable life all sorts of upside down, she'll have to find a way to show just how she's fallen for him…the real him.

My Review

Falling For Max is my first step into the Kowalski Family series. I have to admit that at nine books deep, it's a bit daunting! I know a lot of readers who adore this series, set in small town Maine. I enjoy big small-town series as well, even more when there is a center like the Kowalskis.

I'm going to admit straightaway that I did find the large cast of supporting characters in Falling For Max to be a bit overwhelming. The author did a very good job of briefly conveying which couples were paired together and how they all interconnected. I still struggled to keep everyone straight, but that's on me. Since I had to connect the dots so often, I did have a harder time connecting to the characters. Looking back, if you're a reader who needs to know those connections, I would probably suggest not jumping in at book nine.

That aside, I found Falling For Max to be a very sweet, very straightforward romance. Max Crawford was an interesting romantic lead, not one I encounter often. Whereas a lot of leading men are self-assured and not looking for love, Max was shy, a bit of a loner, and ready to settle down. I found his organization, over-analytical thoughts, and always logical answers to be cute, at least on paper. It's no exaggeration to say that Max was awkward, but he was also really endearing. And apparently hot.

So Max is in search of a lady, but doesn't know how to land one. That's where Tori Burns comes into the story. Tori is a graphic designer (mostly book covers, yay!) who fills in at the local diner in an effort to socialize. Okay, I don't know that I bought that. If I'm going to socialize it's going to be over food and drinks that I'm not serving. But hey, I'm notoriously lazy. Tori and Max form a sweet, honest friendship and she agrees to help him find a date. But it's not going to be her since she has parent issues and professes she will never settle down.

Of course, we all know this means that Tori and Max will probably fall in love while she's helping him find all the right moves. And that's where my straightforward romance assessment comes in. Falling For Max has a fairly linear plot, with no surprises jumping out to change the course. It was sweet and very slightly spicy in the romance department. If you're okay with that, seek the comfort of a sweet, easy romance, then this will likely fit the bill.

Is love in the cards?

Since birth, Lexie Berry has had nothing but bad luck. Orphaned at an early age, she had a rough childhood and a boyfriend who was murdered. Now the beautiful, stylish Lexie is determined to change her luck and her life. But first she's got to make good on a promise: to pick up Ty Walker from prison. One look at the gorgeous ex-convict and Lexie knows she's in trouble-and already thinking about taking a walk on the wild side . . .

For five years, Ty was imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. Now he wants revenge on the people who framed him. Yet when the high-stakes poker player sees the leggy Lexie, he suddenly has other desires on his mind. Realizing that Ty is innocent, Lexie tries to stop his plan for vengeance and help him become a better man. But as Ty battles his inner demons, dirty cops and criminals plot to take him out. Can he and Lexie find a way to escape the past?

I’d woken up to my bouquet in a vase precisely where it now stood. Upon waking, after seeing Ty’s side of the bed was mussed but empty, processing the fact that I slept on top of the covers in my wedding dress, those flowers in that vase were the second thing I saw after I rolled.
And the minute I saw them, I’d frozen, blinking the sleep out of my eyes, convinced I was seeing things.
Unless Vegas had bouquet fairies as well as one-hour tailors, there was no one but Ty who could have located a vase and put my bouquet in it while I slept the sleep of the dead. And, when I realized I wasn’t seeing things, I didn’t know what to think about Ty locating a vase and putting my bouquet in it. I didn’t know him all that well but from what I did know, this seemed a very un‑Ty‑like thing to do. Therefore, I lay in bed and stared at those roses for what had to be five minutes trying to figure out what I thought.
I got out of bed not knowing.
But I also got out of bed with a warm feeling deep in my gut that felt really, really  good as well as thinking that this fake marriage business wasn’t going to be that bad.
Sure, he didn’t talk much.
Sure, when he did, most of it was crude, but it wasn’t like I wasn’t used to that from Ronnie, Shift and their crew. In fact, Ronnie, Shift and their crew were worse.
Sure, there were important ways he was closed off. Then again, we barely knew each other. Sharing our deepest, darkest secrets within forty-eight hours of meeting was not something to be expected. I had no idea why I poured my heart out to him last night. What I knew was, when I did, although he didn’t exactly handle me with care, he was honest. He shared his opinion and I just happened to like his opinion no matter that the realization it made me come to didn’t feel all that great. Not to mention, he’d shown himself to be wise.
Sure, he seemed to have no sense of humor but he also didn’t get ticked when I laughed when he didn’t find anything funny. And he didn’t have no sense of humor. His lips curled up last night. I saw them.
He also didn’t like smarmy men with gold chains staring at my breasts and since I didn’t like that either, I thought it was very cool that he barked at the gross guy who was checking me out making that gross guy stop checking me out.
And he had a way with a compliment.
And last, he was a really fucking good kisser.

I reviewed Lady Luck in 2013. Here's what I thought...

Lady Luck is the book my KA expert friends have been waiting for me to read....pretty much since the day we became friends. To say that Erin and Cindy love Ty Walker is a massive understatement. He is the standard they hold all other book men to, and though he's not an obvious choice, I can totally see why.

So, I went into Lady Luck super excited, ready for another epic story of love and lust, suspense and redemption. This a story of a wrongfully convicted man who leaves prison dead set on revenge, but walks out to a miracle. A story of a woman who sets out to fulfill an obligation, but finds a forever love with an unlikely hero. Ty and Lexie were ridiculous. I loved them so hard. These two became a team, impenetrable, unbreakable. I am totally Team Walker.

Besides the amazing that is Ty and Lexie, Lady Luck has all the fabulous pieces that make the Colorado Mountain series a favorite. We get the hot, strong and (really) silent dude in Ty. We have another spirited, strong, and funny heroine in Lexie. Their relationship is intense and heartwarming. The residents of Carnal play a huge part in the story, particularly my lover Tate. We even get treat of Max and Nina! What's also cool is certain seemingly small bits from Sweet Dreams wind up playing heavily into this story, proving that Kristen Ashley is always going to surprise her readers in the best ways possible.

Lady Luck is another wickedly awesome book in the Colorado Mountain series. This book and series delivers everything I've come to know, expect, and love from a Kristen Ashley novel. These books make me laugh, cry (in both sadness and joy) and clutch my heart at every breathtaking moment.

A Favorite Moment....

"Your nightmare, mama, was my dream.
  My heart clenched.
"Never had a home until you gave me one."
  My breath started sticking.
"Never had anyone give to me the way you gave to me."
My breath stopped sticking and clogged.
"Never thought of findin' a woman who I wanted to have my baby."
  Oh God.
"Never had light in my life, never, not once, I lived wild but I didn't burn bright until you shined your light on me."
  Oh God.
"Whacked, fuckin' insane, but, at night, you curled in front of me, didn't mind I did that time that wasn't mine 'cause it meant I walked out to you."
He had to stop. He had to.
  He didn't.
"Your nightmare," he whispered, turned his head and against my neck he finished, "my dream."

About Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.  And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

He's in for the fight of his life . . .

Army captain Trent Davila loved his wife, Laura, and their two beautiful children. But when he almost lost his life in combat, something inside him died. He couldn't explain the emptiness he felt or bridge the growing distance between him and his family—so he deployed again. And again. And again . . . until his marriage reached its breaking point. Now, with everything on the line, Trent has one last chance to prove to his wife that he can be the man she needs . . . if she'll have him

. . . to win back his only love.

Laura is blindsided when Trent returns home. Time and again, he chose his men over his family, and she's just beginning to put the pieces of her shattered heart back together. But when Trent faces a court martial on false charges, only Laura can save him. What begins as an act of kindness to protect his career inflames a desire she thought long buried—and a love that won't be denied. But can she trust that this time he's back to stay?

My Review

I read both Because of You and Until There Was You in 2012, and really enjoyed both. I like author Jessica Scott's voice and her stories of life amid and after war. Given that she has first-hand knowledge of life in the Armed Services, she brings an authenticity to her books that is very, very rare. And though I have strong feelings about the wars in the Middle East, and have lost a family member there, I admire that the books are focused on the people, and not so much a political commentary.

Marriage-in-crisis books are my catnip. I don't know exactly when this happened, but I find myself constantly gravitating to them. I get kind of shaky and light-headed when I know I'm getting ready to dig into a really messed-up relationship. It's weird, I know. But Back to You isn't so much a marriage-in-crisis as it is a marriage-in-dying embers story. If you've read BoY or UTWY, then you know that Laura and Trent Davila's marriage is in big, big trouble. I adored Family Liaison Laura and was desperate to get her story. In fact, I was a little upset that I didn't get it in UTWY (irrational, but true) which is no detriment to the author or story, but just speaks of the pull of that story and my impatience.

Back to You was A-MA-ZING. Trent and Laura's story was more difficult, more soul-squeezing, and more beautiful than I ever anticipated. Scott took her time with Trent and Laura, thoroughly laid out how they got to such a bad place, their emotions, what they would need to overcome and actually speak about to make it back from the brink. She created a remarkable story of the loss and sacrifice and emotional withdrawal two people experience in life at war. Neither was one hundred percent to blame, though Trent's emotional withdrawal plays a pivotal role. I loved that the story was truly about Trent and Laura trying to find a way back to each other. The love never left. If after ten years, six deployments, two kids, and countless empty hours...if there was anything left. If Trent's sacrifices for his country were worth the fact he was MIA in his own life, that he didn't know how to be a husband or a father.

Needless to say, it was an extremely powerful story.

I'm sure it helped that I had a previous attachment to the couple and the series. I need to mention Shane and Jen and Carponti and Nicole. The friends all play a significant role in the story, which I absolutely loved. Be on the lookout for surprises! And some big laughs, via Carponti.

Back to You had me from the first page. Jessica Scott allowed her characters to be raw and real they gripped my heart. I admit that I cried almost the entire time. So much so that my eyes and cheeks were a little raw by the end. There were a lot of sad tears, and a lot of happy tears, especially during pivotal breakthrough moments. It was bittersweet, and so worth it.

It was sexy too!

The Coming Home series is truly special. After reading Back to You, I craved a reread of the others, and did read the two novellas. I'm kind of dying now for Iacopelli's story now. If you're familiar with the series, you know why. He's a riot and I can't wait to see Emily (Trent's therapist) dig into his heart and mind.

So yeah. This is my long-ass winded way of saying that I loved and highly recommend Back to You.

Favorite Quotes

He sobered, his hands trembling at the thought of his children and the tiny family that had grown while he'd been away. The tiny family that overwhelmed him and terrified him and dropped him to his knees with a need so strong,it crushed his lungs until he could not breathe. He didn't know how to feel good, but he knew he'd never figure it out without them.

His mouth crooked at the corner. His eyes were dark and hungry, his gaze locked on her, devouring her. Looking at her like she was the most precious thing in the world to him. The man who cherished her, who made her feel loved. Who reminded her of the aching desire she felt for him. For just an instant, the damaged warrior in front of her had slipped away, revealing the man she'd loved. Whole. Determined.
  Hers.

He cradled her hips, framing them in the mirror, loving the gentle swell of her belly and the curves that she'd always hated. But she was a woman, a woman who'd given him two beautiful children. Her body was no longer flawless but watching her skin flush beneath his touch, he knew he would never find greater perfection. Even if he went to the ends of the earth, his wife would still be the only woman who did it for him.

There were two chapters of his existence: before the war and after. But there was one constant, one person who had always helped him. One person who kept the light in his soul from snuffing out beneath the darkness of war and pain and death.
As long as his wife was in the world, waiting for him, loving him, he had the strength, the will to go on. To come home, back to her.

His uniform scraped the edge of her cheek. His body was a solid wall beneath her skin and for a brief moment, she simply let him hold her. His strength wrapped around her, his scent pulled her close, reminding her that somewhere inside this man was the man she’d married. The man she’d loved.

She hadn’t meant to cry in front of him. Not again. But the truth had simply slipped free of the chains she’d attempted to bind it with, breaking her resolve until it emptied out of her, tearing free and leaving her drained.

It was a long time until the tears stopped. Her eyes felt swollen.

Now, she rested against Trent and closed her eyes. She simply stopped. Stopped fighting. Stopped arguing. Stopped resisting her stubborn heart that still loved this man no matter how many times he hurt her or lashed out.

His leaving, his anger: He wasn’t in control of those things. Not like she’d convinced herself he was in those dark days when the rumors and innuendos had been breeding like a live thing in the silence between them. But there was more at work here than her husband simply walking out on her.

He’d made a huge step by talking to the counselor. And he hadn’t needed to tell her about their conversation, but he had. Laura leaned back, refusing to believe the insidious voice in her head that said he was just telling her this out of sheer selfishness.

She lifted her gaze, looking deep into his eyes. She started to shift and pull away but Trent moved first, cradling her face with his palms. Gently, his thumbs caressed her cheeks, wiping away the tears.

“I’m so tired of screwing everything up, Laura,” he whispered. “I want to fix this. Not for the trial. For us.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“Yes, it is.” His voice was urgent and harsh. “I can’t fix what I’ve done. And I damn sure don’t deserve your forgiveness.” He lowered his forehead to hers, his palms warm and solid against her skin. “But I’m asking you to help me. Help me reset my normal. Help me learn how to be a dad again. A husband.” He blinked rapidly.

She pressed her lips together, biting back fresh tears. “And what happens when you leave again?” she whispered. “What do I do then?” She sniffed quietly. “You keep breaking my heart.” Her voice cracked.

His fingers crooked around her jaw. “I want to stop.”

They were tucked away in a quiet corner of the coffee shop. The couch was blocked by a high booth. No one could see them. Laura kept her eyes locked on his. Finally he’d laid his fears, his hopes, his dreams in her lap.

She could crush him so easily. A stronger woman might have walked away, doing to him what he’d done so many times to her. But she was not that woman. She wanted to end the pain between them, not prolong it.

She’d thought divorce was the right answer. Ending the sham their marriage had become, protecting their children from more pain. The kids were her life now and she would not apologize for that. For all intents and purposes, she’d been a single parent for years and that was okay because she knew how to do that. Now fear latched on to her heart. Fear that he would leave her again. That he would once again shatter her into a thousand pieces.

But he was here. At this moment, it was all she had. Without giving herself time to think about the consequences, she leaned closer and brushed her lips gently against his.

She pulled away before he could deepen the kiss. Fear and awareness and arousal skittered through her veins, making her off balance, like a needful, sensual thing. She’d grown accustomed to the hugs of her children, their wet kisses and enthusiastic embraces.

What she craved now was something darker. The faintest brush of lips against lips had sparked something primitive inside her. Something deeper and richer. A long-forgotten need to be touched by a man. But not just any man—by this man. His hands, roughened by combat, sliding up her thighs. The coarse pads of his fingertips caressing her skin.

Memories bombarded her as she attempted to lean away and salvage the remnants of her pride.

But Trent was not operating under the get-some-space battle plan. He reached for her, his eyes rich with dark emotion. His palms scraped against her cheeks, his fingers strong as his lips claimed hers.

His breath was a gasp against her tongue and for a moment, Laura was stunned into stillness, unable to move beneath the assault on her senses. But then her body remembered his taste, her tongue remembered his touch, and a warmth awakened inside her. She opened for him, stroking his tongue with hers, her body folding into his like it was meant for him.

Her every nerve came alive. A cascade of long-denied arousal mixed with bittersweet memories of other homecomings, other farewells. It crashed into them both, driving them under a torrent of emotion.

This was the man she had married. A man who could make her body purr just thinking about him inside her. A man who knew exactly how to kiss her to drive her wild.

This was the man she’d been waiting for. She wanted nothing more than to crawl into his lap and have that urgent, passion-filled sex of first homecoming.

It was a long moment before the arousal faded and she became aware of the tender, sucking kisses he placed on her lips.

Another moment before he rested his forehead against hers.

An eternity passed before the words she’d never thought she’d ever say again slid past her lips. “I miss you,” she whispered.

And for once, he did not pull away.

The Weekly Rewind, #109: Book Haul and Giveaway

THE WEEKLY REWIND is a weekly post in which I recap books received in the past week, what I'm looking forward to, and giveaways.

Book Haul
(click on covers to visit GoodReads page)

Hi! So, after a lot of thinking, some talking and a few tears of frustration, I'm going to be making some changes. Over the next few months, I'm going to be working hard to get all my review books knocked out, and will be taking a big step back beginning in October. I'm still going to be reviewing, but am going to be taking only the books I really, really want. I'm going to restructure, with fewer posts, and no Sundays! My kids were gone to their BiBi's (grandma) for a month this summer, and when I went to get them, I realized that I'm spending too much time worrying about getting books read. I love to read, but don't want the constant pressure. So, wish me luck on keeping my resolve, and if you have any tips on blogging more casually, let me know in the comments!

For Review
Ruining Mr. Perfect (The McCauley Brothers, #3)

As you can see, I took one book. Hooray! I accepted this last week, and was excited to get it in the mail. I do love this series!

For Review Consideration

When We Met  Only Enchanting (The Survivors' Club, #4)  The House of the Four Winds (One Dozen Daughters, #1)

When We Met has a really cool concept: four authors writing novellas about four girls who live in one house. I've put this on my to-read-at-my-earliest-convenience list. Same with House of the Four Winds. It looks cool. I don't know anything about Only Enchanting; have any of you read the series?

Purchases

Here Without You (Between the Lines #4)  Crazy Little Thing  The Return of Rafe MacKade (The MacKade Brothers, #1)  Rocky Mountain Heat (Six Pack Ranch, #1) Consumed (Devoured, #2)  Ford: Slack / Taut (Rook & Ronin Spin-off)

I love the Kindle Match program! It allows you to buy audios of previously purchased ebooks, at a reduced price. I got Here Without You and Crazy Little Thing for $1.99 and The Return of Rafe McKade for $3.47. If you've seen audio prices, you know that's a steal. The rest of the books I got for only $0.99 each, and am excited about all.
