GUEST POST AND EXCERPT: UNRESTRAINED by JOEY W. HILL

I would like to welcome author Joey W. Hill to the blog today, to talk about her new release, Unrestrained. I've had the pleasure of reading Unrestrained, and found it to be very thoughtful and very sexy. My review will be posting soon.

UnrestrainedGenre: Erotic Romance
Publisher: Berkley Trade
Publication Date: 12/3/13

From Joey W. Hill—author of the Knights of the Boardroom series—comes a novel of erotic games and power plays, in which an adventurous woman attempts to break down her own barriers
…Athena is an accomplished businesswoman in control of every aspect of her life. But since the death of her husband, she’s had the desire to explore submissive cravings she’s had for some time. Unfortunately, Athena is known as a Mistress, because that’s the role she’s always played.

Her type A personality was strong enough to serve her husband as a Domme because that’s what he needed. It’s not until she meets Dale, a retired Navy SEAL, that she attempts to discover what her own submissive desires are. But letting go of her control is not so easy.

Fortunately, Dale is an accomplished Master who can help Athena live out her fantasies. And as she slowly surrenders to his touch, both of them will learn more about the nature of love between Dominant and submissive, and how it defies all expectations.

I’m not into bondage, but…

“I love your books, but I’m not into bondage or anything like that.”

When I first started writing BDSM erotic romance, I received many reader emails that started that way. And my response was always “that’s totally okay.” I’m a submissive myself, but there are a lot of things my characters do that would get a “Hell no” out of me in a heartbeat. Authors like to write about fantasies as much as readers like to read about them. That’s the really nice thing about fantasies - they’re a safe way to explore our desires and imaginations. I like using the example of a pirate ship to illustrate this. I loved reading historical pirate romances in the 80s. Who wouldn’t want to be ravished by a handsome and commanding pirate captain? In reality, did I want to be on a crowded, damp boat with maggot-infested biscuits and morally-compromised criminals? Uh, no (plus, I get horribly seasick on the ocean). But in my fantasy, pirates could be like the hero of Valerie Sherwood’s Bold, Breathless Love – that’s where my pirate fantasy started – wink).

But there’s a catch. To write really good erotic romance, you have to integrate emotional reality with sexual fantasy, because for women physical desire and emotional need go hand in hand. We want to be swept away by the pirate captain, but in the process, he has to cherish who we are, respect our needs and connect to us in a way that makes us fall in love with him. (Yeah, that would be a really tall order for Blackbeard.)

So here’s a little snippet from my December 3 release, Unrestrained, that integrates a little physical fantasy and emotional reality. Dale, my hero, is a retired Navy SEAL (and very hot Dom), and Athena, my heroine, is a Southern steel magnolia and widow seeking to embrace her submissive cravings. In this scene, he’s just rescued her from an attempted mugging across the street from their BDSM club. See what you think…
* * * * *

There was no shame in a Southern lady leaning on a handsome male rescuer, but even if there had been, Athena would have had little choice. Despite the odd calmness of her mind, her legs couldn’t support her weight. However, he did more than let her lean. When she expected him to open her driver’s side door, instead he bent, slid his arms beneath her and lifted her off her feet. He walked around to the passenger side, letting her down there before he opened the door.

Roy hadn’t been a weakling, but she could count on one hand the times he’d carried her. Worried he might throw out his back, she’d insist he put her down, even though she’d hold on to his neck as she fussed. When he did put her down, she’d compliment his show of manly strength, laughing at the mischief in his brown eyes. Lord, she missed that man’s sense of humor.

She leaned against the frame of the door, swamped by the feeling. A near mugging could do that, remind a woman of the practicalities she faced when her husband was dead and no close family lived in the area. No one was directly involved in her day-to-day well-being. Had she even updated her emergency contact numbers in her purse or at the house? If she’d been seriously hurt, would the emergency room have tried to find Roy?

Oh, for heaven’s sake. She wasn’t going to fall into this self-pitying drivel. She’d update it tomorrow, choose one of her many friends to be primary contact. None of those friends knew about this part of her life, though. They’d have no clue why she was pumping gas in the middle of the night in a part of town none of them frequented. It didn’t really matter, did it? If she needed an emergency contact, she expected discretion wouldn’t be high on her list of priorities.

She noticed her purse was on the edge of the seat, straps dangling to the floorboards, her lipstick a glittering tube of silver on the carpet. It suggested the other man had gotten no further than that in pulling her bag from the car. The one responsible for thwarting him stood at her back, close enough for her to feel his heat. His hand was just above hers on the frame as he waited her out.

She had a sudden desire to slide her hand up over his, hold on tight, feel that human contact. If he turned his hand to clasp hers, she’d experience firsthand the restrained strength he’d used when she watched him bring that cane down on Willow’s flanks, and then again when he’d slid his hand down her bare body, fingers decisively capturing her clit, pushing her over the edge. One more small step, and he’d be as close to Athena as he’d been to his bound submissive.

“I’d like to thank you properly,” she said, staring at that hand. “May I ask your name? Or do you prefer Master Craftsman?” She knew the club bartender had meant it as a joke, a teasing nickname for this man, but it was all she had.

“Hardly. Do you feel Lady Mistress is a good fit for you?”

“It was, once.” She spoke before she thought about the wisdom of saying so, but watching him had brought such thoughts to the surface, hadn’t it? Her legs were trembling again, and her grip slipped on the door frame. “Damn it.”

“Ease in there.” He moved the purse to the floor and folded her firmly into the passenger seat. She’d lost her shoes during the scuffle, but he had them. He placed them neatly by her feet. Her toes curled into the rug, the rougher fibers a contrast with the silk of her nylons.

He shut the door, then came around to the driver’s side. Reaching beneath the seat, he slid it back to accommodate his larger frame before he took the spot. Her keys were still in the ignition, so he turned the engine over, adjusting the air so a low heat began to fill the car. Though it was a warm enough night in New Orleans, she was shivering. Shock, she supposed, and watched him press the seat warmer for the passenger side. It warmed both the back and backside, and she couldn’t help a small sigh of comfort when it responded quickly. German luxury cars were a gift of the gods.

Her dashboard GPS came up, and he glanced at it, pressing the icon programmed for home. Just like that, he had her address. She wasn’t that concerned about it, because he didn’t feel like a threat. Not that way. Her gaze fastened onto his forearm, that dark sprinkle of hair. Lifting her attention to the silver hair at his temples, she reached out, touched it.

Those intent eyes locked with hers in a way that made her close her hand, lower it with only a brief impression of the soft texture. He held her gaze, unsmiling, until she put the hand back in her lap. She could almost hear the click, the connection made, a mutual understanding of their behavior. His wasn’t a surprise to her, not after having watched him in the club. But his reacting that way now told her he wasn’t simply a bedroom Dom, one demanding those terms in the boundaries of a defined session, a sexual scenario. Few men had the confidence to pull it off believably outside a structured environment.

He did.

That intel, rather than suggesting she might act with more caution around him, gave her far more unwise thoughts and desires.

If her reaction had surprised him, given that she was classified as a Domme, he didn’t show it. “I’m taking you home,” he said, “and then I’ll call a cab to get me back to my place. I came with a friend tonight, so I don’t have my truck here. Take a hot shower tonight and a couple aspirin. It’ll make you feel better tomorrow.”

“Voice of experience?” Her tongue seemed to be too thick in her mouth. “That didn’t seem like your first fis-fisticuffs.”

His lips quirked again. “Fisticuffs? Really? Are you a librarian?”

“Do I look like one?”

“Depends.” His gaze covered her, head to toe, and he took his time about it. “I’ve had some interesting fantasies about librarians. The kind where I bend them over a stack of books and discipline them with a nice flexible paperback for shushing me one too many times.”

Was he trying to steady her with the teasing? Giving him a silly smile, she leaned forward and put her finger to her lips, trying to summon a suitably stern librarian expression. “Shh.”

He closed his hand over hers and brought the one finger to his lips, brushing a kiss over the pad. They knew what type of animal they each were, and they’d met through a sexually focused club, so this type of flirtation was meaningless. Two Doms teasing one another with no intent to engage. Except as he continued to hold her wrist, his eyes became more serious, while her fingers loosened, becoming more pliant.

About the author:
I’ve been given more blessings in my life than any one person has a right to have. Despite that, I’m a Type A, borderline obsessive-compulsive paranoiac who worries I will never live up to expectations. I’ve got more phobias than anyone (including myself) has patience to read about. I can’t stand talking on the phone, I dread social commitments, and the idea of living in monastic solitude with my husband and animals, books and writing is as close an idea to paradise as I can imagine. I love chocolate, but with that deeply ingrained, irrational female belief that weight equals worth, I manage to keep it down to a minor addiction. I adore good movies. I’m told I work too much. Every day is spent trying to get through the never ending “to do” list to snatch a few minutes to write.

Despite all these mediocre and typical qualities, for some miraculous reason, these wonderful characters well up out of my soul with stories to tell. When I manage to find enough time to write, sufficient enough that the precious “stillness” required rises up and calms all the competing voices in my head, I can step into their lives, hear what they are saying, what they’re feeling, and put it down on paper. It’s a magic beyond description, akin to truly believing my husband loves me, winning the trust of an animal who has known only fear or apathy, making a true connection with someone, or knowing for certain I’ve given a reader a moment of magic through those written words. It’s a magic that reassures me there is Someone, far wiser than myself, who knows the permanent path to that garden of stillness, where there is only love, acceptance and a pen waiting for hours and hours of uninterrupted, blissful use.

If only I could finish that darned “to do” list. (from GoodReads)

COURTNEY REVIEWS: PARALLEL by LAUREN MILLER

ParallelGenre: YA Sci Fi
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publication Date:
Format: Hardback
Pages: 432
Source: Publisher
Rating: 4.5 stars

Abby Barnes had a plan. The Plan. She'd go to Northwestern, major in journalism, and land a job at a national newspaper, all before she turned twenty-two. But one tiny choice—taking a drama class her senior year of high school—changed all that. Now, on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Abby is stuck on a Hollywood movie set, miles from where she wants to be, wishing she could rewind her life. The next morning, she's in a dorm room at Yale, with no memory of how she got there. Overnight, it's as if her past has been rewritten.

With the help of Caitlin, her science-savvy BFF, Abby discovers that this new reality is the result of a cosmic collision of parallel universes that has Abby living an alternate version of her life. And not only that: Abby's life changes every time her parallel self makes a new choice. Meanwhile, her parallel is living out Abby's senior year of high school and falling for someone Abby's never even met.

As she struggles to navigate her ever-shifting existence, forced to live out the consequences of a path she didn't choose, Abby must let go of the Plan and learn to focus on the present, without losing sight of who she is, the boy who might just be her soul mate, and the destiny that's finally within reach.

When Andrea sent me Parallel I really didn't have any idea what to expect. The blurb sounded super interesting, but still....how was this going to work out? This girl has a parallel self that is changing her every life decision? What? Sooo...when I started it and was confused by the second chapter, my misgivings were creeping in at a quick rate.

Then, I stopped. Read something else. Took a deep breath and said to myself "Self, you need to read this book. Quit being a whiney bitch, and get to it." And so I started again. I went back through the dates at the beginning of the chapters and while I still wasn't getting the time frames being a year apart I just went with it.

Moral of this story: Do Not Quit This Book. After that little bitty bump in the road, the story really picked up. We have Abby in the Here = Present Day for her, and she is an actress and really hating being in California for this movie and missed out on all this stuff. She fell into this life, and can't help wonder what it would be like to be doing something else. Ergo, her dream of college. THEN: the day of her 18th birthday she wakes up across the country in a dorm room she's never seen....cue suspenseful background music.

In the There = A Year Before = Repeating Abby's Senior year. Things aren't going quite the same way they did the first time around...which is in turn affecting Abby's present day life. She ends up in Astronomy class instead of Drama. She ends up injured instead of running....event after event after event goes entirely differently and Here Abby doesn't know each morning which event from There is going to change her life and rip her into somewhere else into the universe.

She has a cast of friends that make up her Here and There (romantic interests in both places, but I wouldn't call this a romance...no smut here, folks...and they say you can't write about college kids without a sex scene...ppssh) and one BFF that is in the know and helps her figure out each day. Events unfold, the suspense gets cray and I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I did have a couple of Aha! moments of guessing (Okay, ONE moment) what might be ahead of me...and I got really excited and started manic tweeting Andrea how good this book is! (Sorry!)

Sorry this is so long, but its kind of a long book. Whew, catch my breath. THEN just when I think I've gotten everything figured out. The effing end. OMG. The end. I have been sitting on this for a few days to decide how I could write a review about it. Parallel is intricate, and developed and really blew my mind. I especially liked that one of the love interests was a geeky guy that wore pleated pants and everything wasn't always the best and the most beautiful with these kids...which has really been lacking in some books (A, I know you tweeted this displeasure recently...not everyone can be beautiful and messed up and virginal, right?). I really enjoyed it, and hope that you might give it a chance if it crosses your radar at some point!!

GUEST POST AND REVIEW: WHEN IT'S RIGHT by JEANETTE GREY

Today I have a review and guest post from Jeanette Grey, author of When It's Right.

When It's Right
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Samhain Publishing
Publication Date: 12/3/13
Format: eARC
Pages: 79
Source: Author
Rating: 4 stars

"He's the last resolution she intends to break. "

Still licking his wounds after a messy breakup, Nate is at loose ends for New Year's Eve and itching for a wild and crazy adventure to jolt him out of his rut. Now if he could only convince his best friend, Cassie, to break away for an impromptu road trip to Times Square.

Fun as it sounds, Cassie is reluctant to accept Nate's invitation. Little does he know, she's made resolutions of her own-resolutions about finally getting over her long-standing crush on him. Telling herself this trip will be the perfect "last hurrah," she packs her bag.

The trip is a fiasco from the outset. A car that won't start, a freak storm that strands them on the side of the road, and a long drive with too much time for true confessions. Cassie's rocks Nate to the core, leaving him wondering if the best thing that ever happened to him has been right in front of him all along.

Warning: Contains two best friends, a secret crush, and a road trip that leads to tow trucks, unexpected hotel-room sharing, epiphanies, sex, and more.

The Story Behind When It's Right

While I'm often a little gun-shy about writing tropes, this book features my very favorite one: friends to lovers. It's a trope that never feels tired to me, simply because that's how the greatest love story of my own life went. My husband and I were best friends for four years before we finally got our act together, and I don't think I'll ever get sick of writing that moment of awakening when two people who are already close come to realize they can be so much more.

I worked as a teacher for three years, but Cassie is the first character I've ever written who is one. She's also the first blonde, and the first heroine with remotely athletic inclinations.

Nate's also something of a first, but only in the way that he isn't motivated by a tragic backstory. Rather, he's a fairly well-adjusted guy who just happens to have made a series of fairly terrible decisions when it comes to love.

I started writing this story shortly after learning that my husband had gotten an amazing new job—and that we'd have to move from North Carolina to upstate New York. I didn't even really realize what I was doing until much later, but the plot arc of the book evolved into the main characters taking a road trip from North Carolina to New York City. Sometimes the mind works in mysterious (and not-so-mysterious) ways.

One of the major turning points of the book centers around a car accident, where a sudden storm sends our intrepid hero and heroine careening off the road. This time I knew exactly what my subconscious was doing—I had walked away basically unharmed from a similar wreck just a few weeks before. My arms were actually shaking as I wrote the scene.

The only person more shocked than I was that I decided to write a New Year's Eve book was my husband. While we've had our fair share of wild and crazy New Year's Eves, recently we've come to find that we prefer spending them quietly, at home, with just the two of us. Then again, maybe that just made it all the more fun to throw my characters into a New Year's Eve that they spend anything but quietly. J

My Review
I adore holiday novellas, particularly those that surround Christmas and New Years. But I especially love the novellas that have so much emotion in such a small space. The novellas filled with beautiful writing and a heartfelt story that has me wishing for more, yet fulfilled. When It's Right is one such novella, and Jeanette Grey has once again won me with her gorgeous, emotion-fueled writing.

When It's Right is the story of two friends, Nate and Cassie, who've never tried to be more. Cassie has always seen Nate as more, even had a crush on him. But she is resigned to the knowledge that he will never feel that way about her. Nate has stumbled from relationship to relationship, but after the last disastrous end, he finally recognizes that something is missing.

A last-minute road trip to Time's Square for New Year's Eve sets Cassie and Nate in motion. But the trip isn't smooth sailing, it is filled with one bad turn after another. The close proximity and the heightened emotions lead Cassie and Nate to the realization that what they've both always wanted is right there in their hand. Will they have the courage to grab the opportunity for love?

When It's Right was by turns funny and sad. It was also reflective. It was sensual and romantic. This was a fulfilling novella, and Jeanette Grey is an extremely gifted writer. If you're looking for a gorgeous holiday novella, please give When It's Right a try.

Favorite Quotes:

This was right. He held Cassie closer. Because that wasn't all it was like. It was like every other moment he'd had with her over the past five years--all those moments of friendship and companionship and happiness so profound he hadn't even realized their source. All the smiles and laughter. The casual touches and the embrace of one friend wrapping around another. And it was more. So much more.   ~eARC, 43%

His mouth opened, and there was nothing but this kiss. His kiss. The press of tongue and a glance of teeth. It was wet and sloppy, careless and yet firm. It tasted like letting go and giving in. Like something so wrong and so right.   ~eARC 50%

From acclaimed author Katie McGarry comes an explosive new tale of a good girl with a reckless streak, a street-smart guy with nothing to lose, and a romance forged in the fast lane

The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.

Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.

But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

Like so many readers, I loved Pushing the Limits and Dare You To. Noah, Beth, and Isaiah are three of the most heart-wrenching characters I've read, and I want them to have happy, safe endings. We got there with Noah Hutchins (always my favorite), and Beth. But after the way he was left at the end of Dare You To, I really needed this for Isaiah; for him to be better than surviving. Happy.

To that point, before I go further in my review, with what I may have liked, loved, or felt "meh" about, I have to say one thing. Katie McGarry can write. She owns her words and uses each one to create stories that make readers fall in love with her characters. From my own experience, I can say that I have hurt -badly- for Noah, Beth and Isaiah. I become fully invested in their lives, and want their happy ending. So for that, I cannot say enough good things about McGarry's writing.

Overall, I liked Crash Into You - quite a lot - but that's not to say I didn't have a couple issues. In the first two books in the series, Isaiah was portrayed as a darker character. He smokes pot and drinks, is a very tough guy who's pretty much closed off to everyone but Isaiah and Beth. In Crash Into You, I didn't really see that darkness. It seems that Isaiah isn't quite who he's portrayed himself to be, it's a cover for protection. I guess I can see that, but still, I felt a bit thrown. It's not that I don't think it's possible for Isaiah to have put up that façade for Noah, but since they are brothers by bond, I don't see why. Other than that, I liked the characterization of Isaiah, and was very invested in his story, particularly his bonds with Noah and Beth. But I also enjoyed seeing this tough and closed-off boy fall in love.

Rachel, she was a bit of a challenge for me. I did like that she was a car freak. I had a friend who was so into cars in school, she even drove an old Mustang (until we wrecked it).  I know my friend would have been thrilled to find a girl like Rachel in books as a teen. I also liked that Rachel was non-judgmental about Isaiah's background and tough looks. That she accepted Isaiah just as he was. What kept me from being completely Team Rachel was mostly her family. What a self-absorbed, enabling group of people they were. I'm still a bit boggled at one family that wrapped up in the past like that. And this is not to say that I don't understand why they may have been so self-absorbed and way too protective of Rachel. I do get it. I just don't get it, and that's where I struggled, because it was a bit much for me to take. I don't want to judge the story based on the dysfunctional Young family, but maybe if I didn't have to understand their motivations, Rachel's motivation to please them to the point of illness, and her constant panic attacks, it would have been a bit easier. The bright side to this dilemma? Character growth. Rachel grew immensely as a character, and I do truly appreciate that.

Crash Into You may not have been quite the story I expected, but I did enjoy it quite a lot. I loved the racing, the bond between Noah, Beth, and Isaiah, and the joy of seeing Isaiah experience true happiness. I didn't love everything about it, but I did feel so much, and at the end, that counts for a lot.

"This is who I am, Rachel. Accept it or not. The tattoos won't wash off. The earrings will never change. I am who I am and nothing more. I'm loyal to a chosen few, I always keep my word and I'll protect you with my life. I scare the hell out of most people, but you will never have anything to fear from me. Choose. Love me or don't. All I ever wanted was to make a name for myself as Candice Salinas, creative writing grad student at the University of Miami. Of course, secretly I already have made a name for myself: as Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance writer. Though thrilled that my books are selling and I have actual fans, if anyone at UM found out, I could lose my scholarship…and the respect of my faculty advisor, grade-A-asshole Professor Dylan.

Enter James Walker, super-hot local barista and—surprise!—my student. Even though I know a relationship is totally off-limits, I can’t stop myself from sneaking around with James, taking a few cues from my own erotic writing…if you catch my drift. Candy’s showing her stripes for the first time in my real life, and I’ve never had so much fun. But when the sugar high fades, can my secrets stay under wraps?

James swam closer to me. “I would ordinarily try to kiss you right now, but we’re on campus,” he said, continuing the fantasy of the two of us just being together without the complications of being the two of us.
Here it was—the kiss conversation. I guess it was impossible to deny there was something happening between us. Whether he finally said it or not, I could feel it. My whole body was begging for him, pleading on its knees.
“What about any of this is ordinary?” I asked. We were floating side by side. Toe-to-toe, shoulder to shoulder, cheek to cheek. I could have ducked underwater. I could have run out of the pool, or away. There was a whole world I could have put between us if I wanted to, but instead I hovered there waiting to see what he would do next. Waiting to see what I would do next.
“The part where we are supposed to stay away from each other,” he said, turning to me. His lips were so close, waiting for mine to connect, to make a choice, to show him I could make a choice.
“I’ve been thinking about revising that rule,” I said, the words out before I could stop them.
“Ooh, revision. We going to take a red pen to this relationship?” he asked his breath as warm as the water on my face.
I shrugged. I couldn’t respond. I’d already said too much. It was easier to write the words, easier to hide behind silence. Confessing my real feelings for James would only do one thing—get me hurt. Sure, he wanted to kiss me now, to be with me now, but that would change. I would never let myself be in a situation like that again.
“I think I’m going to get out.” I swam to the wall, climbed up the stairs, and sat on the edge with my legs dangling in the water.
James swam over to me. “It’s too bad we can’t be together,” he said, his face parallel to my wet knees, “because this gives me some ideas.”
Droplets from his hair pinged against the surface. He exhaled so close to my thighs it felt like each freckle on my skin was the result of a lightning strike.
Maybe I could leave Candice behind and just be like one of Candy’s characters. Why couldn’t James and I have a purely physical relationship? It was clear my Miami life was sorely, or not so “sorely,” lacking in that department, and after drinks with Professor Dylan, it appeared James could be trusted to keep his mouth shut.
“What kind of ideas?” I wanted to know what they were, badly, but could I go through with them?
“Not the kind a student should be thinking about his teacher.”
