Librarian Elizabeth Williams is drinking her cares away at Perdition, a notorious biker bar in her hometown of Hell, TX. She meets Ryker, a member of the Four Horsemen MC and they start a fun, sexual fling. Ryker finds himself falling for Elizabeth, but an outlaw has no business with a “good girl”. Hell, he’s not even sure he’d be worthy of one. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is being stalked by her ex and Carl’s behavior is becoming more and more erratic. Can Ryker protect Elizabeth without losing his heart?

My Review

Ah...Okay. Sweet Perdition. It was crude, rude and raunchy. And I liked it. It was rough and rowdy and wild. And I liked it. It was funny and filthy and oh so dirty. And that was my favorite part.

Sweet Perdition opens in a MC bar, Perdition, located in Hell, Texas. (that's a redundant name if you've ever been to South Texas in July/August) Ryker spies Elizabeth across a crowded bar, drowning her sorrows while wearing a pink bridesmaid dress. Ryker notices fair Elizabeth is a knockout and determines he's gonna tap that before the night is over. So, Ryker joins her, they begin chatting, and he's to be wowed by how much he likes her. As an actual person and not only a penis receptacle! A bet over a game of pool later, Ryker and Elizabeth have really hit it off. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is deciding she's ready for a one-night stand with a hot, aggressive biker. She doesn't care if he wants to pump and dump because she's all about that too, for tonight. So it's game on for Ryker and Elizabeth!

Okay, I know my tone has been a little snarky, but I actually enjoyed Sweet Perdition a lot. I haven't read a lot of erotic romance lately (gasp!) and I love that it was so dirty hot. I think I even blushed a few times, which is a good indication of the dirty. Ryker's all about blowing and going all over the place and Elizabeth is more than happy to be along for the ride, no matter what he had planned. It's a win-win, really. Yeah, I think that was my favorite part of the book. lol

To be honest, I wasn't wild about how Ryker treated the relationship between him and Elizabeth. He was all "I'll do whatever and whomever I want, but no one will ever touch you." which soooo doesn't work for me. I was afraid Elizabeth was going to let that stand, and she is slow to really push him back. I loved that Ryker's mom acted as a sounding board/advisor for Elizabeth on the ways of the club. When Elizabeth finally lays down the law with Ryker, I was half shaking my head and half giving her a fist pump in female solidarity. The fact that characters actually have to put down ultimatums about the expectation of not cheating is sort of hilarious, but again, this is not my world.

On a side note, I loved that the history of the Four Horsemen included a time when the women, led by Ryker's mom, ruled and completely took care of business. I thought that was an excellent touch by the author.

I wish, wish, wish that I could turn my brain off. But I'm a reader who has to believe in the story I'm given. If it's a fantasy, I have to be able to find logic within the world-building. If it's historical, I need to know that the setting, language and actions are true to the time. If it's a contemporary romance, I need to believe in the couple's viability. I hate that this happens, but true MC books almost always test that line with me. I need to believe that the couple has a true connection, and that they can withstand the temptations and strains the MC (namely, the women hanging around) places on them. I do believe Ryker and Elizabeth had a really strong physical connection. I don't necessarily believe they are truly in love by the end of the story - I don't think they even knew each other well enough to establish that, but I do believe they had potential. I'm not sure they would stand the test of time and easy women, but hey, this is Romanceland, and in Romanceland, it's all good.

Sweet Perdition obviously left me conflicted in some ways. I have to just suck that up because I knew exactly what I was getting into by picking up an MC book. Ultimately, I found the story to be funny and wickedly sexy. I would say that fans of the sub-genre will likely enjoy this story. There's good potential for this series, with several interesting characters in line (especially Shepherd!) As for myself, I will definitely continue with book two, Hot as Hades.

Favorite Quotes

She should know better. Librarians and bikers really don't mix! But she'd been out of her mind when she left the wedding, speeding down the road like a maniac, crying.
She should have bypassed Perdition and found a nice, safe Applebee's and ordered a margarita the size of her head, maybe a plate of spinach dip. She could have drowned her sorrows in tequila, carbs, and cheese and gone home with a full belly and a buzz.

"Holy shit. I forgot to ask you what you do. You are seriously a librarian? You aren't fucking with me?"
She made a face. "Yes, I'm really a librarian, MLS degree and all."
"Hot damn." He pictured her behind a desk, dressed all prim and proper; her hair bound up in a little bun, black-framed glasses perched on her nose. "Remind me later to have you dress up and ask me about my overdue books."

Frankly, he'd rather spend the night fucking her seven ways from Sunday, but he bet a girl like her expected a proper date, with a meal and shit. Well, he could play along with that if it kept her in his bed.
She agreed, gave him her address and phone number, and they both finished their food.
Jesus. He'd just planned an honest to God date. Break out the maxi pads. He'd officially become a chick.

"Yes, that's the Horsemen for you. They like liquor, fighting and easy women. Usually in that order."
Elizabeth made a face. "I take it this happens often?"
She shrugged. "Not as much as you'd think. Duke, one of the members just got paroled toady and they wanted to welcome him home in style." She sighed. "Personally, I would bake a cake, but they prefer to express their love with lots of skanky vag."

  2. Penis receptacle…tehehehe

Yeah - this one isn't for me. I get too angry about that I can go f*ck whoever I want but you can't bullshit & I have to be really sure he isn't going to stray in the end.

  3. I love that touch about the club being led by women, these bikers are notorious for being chauvinists which is why I don't read much of them. Too bad you didn't have suspended disbelief, I guess that happens. Love might be questionable but obviously they're in-lust and very infatuated? Happy weekend, hottie!

  4. Meh, I passed this up because it didn't sound believable and I has just read another pseudo biker book that irked me. Glad you enjoyed something about it though!

  8. I need to feel the couples long term viability believable for me to really enjoy the overall story, too, Andrea. It's nice that overall you had fun with this even if you didn't quite buy Ryker and Elizabeth being in love. Great review! :)
