One night . . . one violent supernatural battle . . . and five stories of the men whose lives will be changed by it.

Kane, Brethren Guardian and one of the few, Natural Shape-Shifters left in existence, survived the bloody battle of Brahm Hill but lost two of his closest friends. For all of his good-natured sarcasm and eye-popping good looks, Kane finds himself unable to completely forget about that night, so he seeks comfort in the one thing he is truly good at . . . sex!

This shape-shifting bad boy believes in having a good time—a very good time, usually involving some mingled heavy breathing with a sexy Dhampir in a tiny closet somewhere. But when he is sent into the freezing tundra of the Northwest Territories to investigate a troublesome supernatural being on the loose, he ends up crossing paths with a woman who almost instantly drives him insane with want . . . because she doesn’t seem to be falling for the shifter’s charms.

It’s completely inexplicable.

Skye Matthews has a job to do, and she needs to be focused on that, not spending all her time rebuffing the advances of this way-too-cocky and handsome stranger. Yet, there is something irresistible about this self-involved playboy that Skye can’t seem to stay away from. And when the unidentified Kane is sent to investigate takes an unnatural interest in Skye, protecting her becomes the Guardian’s top priority.

But . . . can he save Skye from a supernatural being no one has ever encountered before?

I know my blog doesn't reflect it these days, but I actually am a fan of Paranormal Romance, particularly Adult. Last year, I began reading The Charmed Trilogy by Christine Wenrick. It was a romantic and exciting take on vampires, dhampirs, and more, but it was an especially good romance. I was sad to see the series end early this year, but very excited when I learned there would be a spin-off, The Men of Brahm Hill.

The first book in the spin-off, Someone Else's Skye picks up fairly quickly after the events at Brahm Hill that ended The Charmed Trilogy. It centers around Skye, a mysterious woman who showed up on the battlefield, seemingly immune to the danger, and Kane, a Guardian Shifter. And a sexy one, at that. In the aftermath of the Battle at Brahm Hill, the Guardians are regrouping, and recovering. A new type of supernatural being draws Kane to the North, where he once again crosses paths with Skye. This sets them both on a new and unexpected path.

Kane, a serial ladies man, is confused by the overwhelming feelings he quickly develops for Skye. He's never felt the urge to pursue a relationship, and never planned to. He sets out to seduce Skye and learn her secrets along the way. Skye is a complete mystery, and she is definitely hiding some big secrets. I absolutely loved this part of the story, because I never expected the direction in which it turned. Besides uncovering what is truly going on, this book was also an intense and funny love story. Funny because Kane is a riot. It's not that he was cracking jokes or being silly, he was just the best kind of smartass. That's my favorite kind of humor and one most of the Men of this series employ.

I love when an author can surprise me, and Wenrick did multiple times in Someone Else's Skye. I really didn't expect the paranormal aspects to take such in-depth and unique turns. I should expect it, though, because Wenrick did the same thing in her Charmed books, and that's one of the reasons I enjoyed them so much. The end of the story was pretty fabulous. Shocking revelations were made, on multiple fronts. Someone Else's Skye came to a very satisfying conclusion, and set up well for the next book in the series.

Favorite Quote:

Skye's heart was racing at a rate that would launch it right out of her chest. Her lips felt her way along his freshly shaved but rougher skin until she made contact with his mouth. He had been waiting for her. And once her lips skimmed over his, at first petal-soft, then deeper, he groaned and took the kiss further until they were fused together and she felt sure the world would spin out of control beneath her.   ~eARC, 35%

  4. I wouldn't have thought that this book was a paranormal romance from the cover. I thought it would be of a contemporary novel.
I haven't read a paranormal romance in a long time. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this one, Andrea. I also love it when an author can surprise me with twists I didn't see coming. I'll keep this one in mind for when I want a paranormal romance book.
    Great review, Andrea!

  10. You have no idea how glad I am to see this here and that you do enjoy the occasional PNR like how I read the occasional contemporary romance. I feel like a fraud sometimes stopping by here because I don't read "real" romance novels on a regular basis lately.

I will take note of that trilogy you mentioned, it sounds right up my alley.
