Poppy Johnson is a girl under intense pressure. Pressure from her family. Pressure from herself. But Poppy has had enough. And in a moment of epiphany, in front of a crowded auditorium, Poppy decides she's had enough. She doesn't want to delay her happiness. She doesn't want to hold out for the red jelly beans (read the book and this makes sense!) And so Poppy sets out on a month-long journey to find her happiness.
I found The Jelly Bean Crisis to be a very cute story. Author Jolene Stockman has a very whimsical, endearing flair to her writing. I spent a lot of my time smiling while reading this book. I just know the the book must be peppered with a bit of her own personality. The message of the story is a worthy one. Though I was a chronically mellow teen, I knew many others who could have learned a lesson from this book. Honestly, how many of us are fully formed at sixteen years old? Shouldn't young adults take a breath, a step back, and truly learn who they are before they make decisions that will impact the rest of their lives?
And while I did enjoy the value of The Jelly Bean Crisis, I must say that I didn't quite understand Poppy. She was jealous of another girl at school who achieved minor success with, what Poppy perceived as, very little work. The girl was an artist. And though Poppy found that trivial, this girl apparently did have some talent.Also, once she set off on her journey, she virtually ignored her friends. It was like she felt as though she needed to change all aspects of her life and I just wasn't feeling it.
Overall, though, I found The Jelly Bean Crisis to be a fun story with a meaningful message. I felt as if the story were almost a motivational story. And that's great. I think it would do well with a teen at a crossroads in their life,
