Trevor Shay has it all—a successful football and baseball career, and any woman he wants. But when he finds out his college mentor’s daughter is in trouble, he drops everything to come to her aid.

Haven Briscoe has finally landed a dream job as a sportscaster for a major network. But she hasn’t been able to move past the recent death of her beloved father, and it’s affecting her career. A plum assignment following the daily life of sports superstar Trevor Shay might be just the inspiration she needs…

Trevor will do anything to spark life back into Haven, including letting her into every aspect of his world. The chemistry between them flames higher than one of Trevor’s home runs and faster than his dashes to the end zone. But as they grow closer, Haven stumbles onto Trevor’s closely guarded secret, one he’s hidden his entire life. And despite his protests, now it’s Haven’s turn to put everything on hold to help Trevor. Will he let her in and trust her with a secret that could blow his professional and personal world apart?

My Review

Dammit. I love the Play by Play series, and I loved Straddling the Line. This is only the second book in this series I've read, in addition to Burton's Hope series, and I have to say, this was one hot, really heartfelt story.

Once I began reading, the reason Straddling the Line initially won me over was not the obvious. I mean, yeah, the sexy was A-Okay with me, obviously. But what got me truly invested was Haven Briscoe's love for her recently deceased father. After nearly a year, Haven is still mourning the loss of her dad. Haven's dad taught her the love of sports, that love is what bonded them in a lot of ways. Though I still have my dad, he's recently coming through a severe health crisis, and his mortality is often on my mind. Like Haven and her dad, my dad and I always shared a deep love of sports, especially baseball. So many of my childhood memories involved us watching sports together (Go SF Giants!) while he explained the rules and how much he loved to play, and could have done well if he'd lived in a larger town. No matter how strained things were between us at various points, we always had sports. To this day, I randomly find myself spouting off trivial facts about players or games because I absorbed everything we talked about. So this, Haven's memories of her father and that bond they shared, that is what drew me into Straddling the Line.

Besides my personal feelings about the book, this was a damn good story! We have sexy Trevor Shay, a dual threat in that he's a great baseball player and football player (tight end, FTW). Because he also shared a strong bond with Haven's dad that began in college, he wants to help her through her rough time. She comes to stay with Trevor for a story, but this is when they begin to really get to know each other. Trevor didn't have time for Haven in college, but he's certainly making the time now. I like that the relationship begins with an emotional connection, with the two really doing the work to get to know each other.

But oh, that physical connection between Trevor and Haven will not. be. denied, yall! And wow, Trevor Shay can bring on the dirty, filthy, yet somehow sweet talk like a boss. I think I likely speak for a lot of women when I say that the one time in which a bossy, mouthy man is welcome is when getting naked is involved. And let me tell you, in that respect Trevor Shay is a champ. I repeat: dirty, dirty, filthy talk that made me shiver. Nice.

Straddling the Line wasn't all sex and fun, though. There are some serious issues in regards to Trevor, his past and his career. I didn't pick up on the clues throughout, but once the situation was laid out, I was really invested and thought Burton did a great job with this plot point. It was very meaningful and well-detailed.

Straddling the Line has solidified my love for the Play by Play series. Not only am I excited about the books I've read and the future installments, but I really want to make the time to read those I've missed. If you're looking for sexy, fun Sports Romance, give this series a try.

He dropped down beside her, cupping her face in his hands to kiss her.
They rolled over on their backs and stared up at the ceiling.
"Okay, now I might be a little out of breath. But I think my brains also might be leaking out of my ears."
  She laughed. "That good, huh?"
  "Yeah. That good."
She flipped over on her side and rested her head in her hand, content to just look at him. He really was an amazingly beautiful man. If she could go back in time and tell her younger self that she'd be here in bed naked with Trevor Shay, her younger self would laugh at her and tell her there was no way in hell that was ever going to happen, because Trevor was way out of her league.
Yet, here she was. and Trevor seemed...content. Happy.

Logan McCormack likes his isolated life on the ranch, until a movie crew starts filming there. When actress Desiree Jenkins blows into his life, she wrecks it harder than the Oklahoma winds with her brutal honesty and soft touch. Des knows this is a temporary stay, but she loves the open freedom of the land, and for the first time in her life, Des feels like she might have found a place she can call home, with a man she might be falling in love with. But Logan’s heart is tougher than the soil beneath them—can she convince him that they belong together?

When I read the first book in the Hope series, Hope Flames, back over the winter, I thought it was a nice book, but it didn't really stand out for me. It's weird how mood or timing can affect a reader's experience, because looking back, I did like Hope Flames quite a lot, even more so as time's gone by. As I realized how fondly I remembered that story, I decided to read book two, Hope Ignites. I'm really glad that I wised up, because Hope Ignites was such a great story. If I hadn't jumped back into the Hope series, I would have really missed out on something special.

Logan McCormack had to have been drunk or out of his goddamned mind to have agreed to let a movie crew film on his ranch.

What made Hope Ignites so enjoyable for me was the characters. I must be a bit twisted, because grumpy heroes are really doing it for me these days. To be honest, I love it when my own husband is kind of grumpy and I can play off that, so I guess it probably does make sense. Logan McCormack was so damn cranky and gruff and grumpy and so unimpressed by anything and UNFF, it killed me so good. Logan's "I couldn't give less of a shit" attitude was so appealing to me, and I just wanted to smack him around a little bit. In the fun way. He's not interested in being chatty and likeable. Logan is not at all impressed by the movie being filmed on his ranch, or the celebrities. His mother's abandonment left Logan soured to love, sure that any woman would eventually leave. His ranch is his life, and all he needs. Logan is content being alone. Or so he thinks.

Logan is impressed, though, by Des Jenkins. Trust me, he's very begrudging about it, and resistant to Des's appeal. Not because Des is a beautiful actress, but because she is a beautiful, vibrant woman who is intent on getting under his skin. Des was a surprise, very charming and warm. She's a great match to Logan. She responds to his crankiness in the same way I do, by tweaking her man until he's about to burst. Des takes Logan completely in stride. Her warm and inquisitive nature complements his aloof, quiet one. Des loves her career, but is exhausted.

Des wants what Logan has: a beautiful, peaceful place to call home. Can they find it together? It does seem against the odds, with Logan settled on his Oklahoma ranch and Des based in Los Angeles. Love always finds away in romance, of course, and the fun is seeing how our hero and heroine find a way to come together and make it work.

Hope Ignites also has a really great secondary story about Des's best friend/co-star, Colt. Colt is the hottest young actor in Hollywood, and gay. I really sympathized with his struggle to maintain his career, and do what's in his heart.  We also get a nice bit of Hope Flames's Luke and Emma, and it was very nice to revisit them. Especially with them being such a warm and endearing couple. I actually enjoyed these two even more this time around, and was so happy seeing them move towards their happy ever after. We also get a nice feel for what's coming in book three, Hope Burns. It seems that story will center on Emma's sister Molly and Carter.

Hope Ignites was an excellent story with engaging characters and a love story I really rooted for. If you're looking for a fun and sexy story, I highly recommend the Hope series.

Favorite Quotes

She liked this man. He might be a little on the quiet side, but underneath? There was a fierce storm brewing in Logan McCormack. And she'd like to be in the middle of that when it burst.

  "So what do you need?"
She leaned her head back against his shoulder. "Right now? Just this. To be here with you here tonight with a million stars overhead and no one else around."
  "And tomorrow?"
She turned and laid her hands on his chest. "Screw tomorrow. I don't want to think about tomorrow when today was so perfect, and tonight I'm here with you."

Carolina Preston has only one goal in mind—launching her new fashion line. She needs only one last thing to make it perfect—hockey phenom Drew Hogan. But Carolina and Drew have a history that goes back to their college days, and Carolina doesn’t want the embarrassment of her past to cloud the brightness of her future.

Drew is eager for the chance to show Carolina he isn’t the boy who hurt her back then, but a man now, with the skills necessary to melt the icy exterior of her cold heart.

First Impression... Love that cover. Hot guy holding a hockey stick? Yes. I've heard good things about this series.

The Story... Melting the Ice has a favorite trope of mine, the playboy who falls for his best friend's little sister. That almost always makes for a good time, for me, with the fun all the fun of a new romance, along with the addition of the guilt of getting it on with little sister.

Carolina is working furiously to launch a new fashion line, and she wants the help of her inspiration, Drew. Drew, a pro hockey player, is her older brother's best friend, and the subject of her long-ago fantasies. A fantasy that came to life in a one night stand during college. Drew walked away without looking back, and Carolina never forgave him. When they reconnect, Drew is all about hooking up again, but Carolina isn't so willing to set herself up for another heartbreak. The continued close encounters put the two on the edge, and it's not long before they begin an affair hot enough to melt.

The Characters... Carolina was a very likable heroine. She's driven and very focused on her career. I like that she didn't crumble when Drew came back into her life and started laying the charm on her. She's never forgotten how he hurt her, but did also recognize that it was his way, then. It's no spoiler to say that Drew does manage to work his way back into her life and bed, but Carolina never lost focus of her goals. I found that admirable. I love a strong heroine, but there is nothing wrong with being soft in some areas as well.

On the surface, Drew seems like an arrogant playboy athlete. It quickly becomes clear that Drew is a very nice guy who has a fun sense of humor. Sure, he's arrogant to an extent, but it was pretty charming. And it seem that Drew has changed his ways for the most part, and isn't looking for another one night stand with Carolina. He wants more, and he's willing to do what it takes to get it. I love that in a hero.

Fans of One Sweet Ride will be happy to see Gray and Evelyn have quite a bit of time in Melting the Ice.

The Writing... This is the second book of Burton's I've read, and while I like the writing in both, I enjoyed this one a lot more. The characters were fun and engaging, the story wasn't particularly surprising or new, but it had a good hook that kept me reading.

Melting the Ice is the seventh book in the Play by Play series, one I haven't picked up before. I will say you can definitely pick this up and jump right in, though having read it, I definitely want to read the previous book, One Sweet Ride. The couple from that book seems really great. There's also a nice lead-in to the next book in the series, Straddling the Line.

The Heat... was pretty darn steamy. Caroline and Drew had a really good chemistry, and you could tell it was just a matter of time before they were going to combust. Each intimate scene was used to progress the story or relationship, and I liked that each time really meant something to them. Drew had a pretty filthy mouth and a good imagination. That's always a check in the "win" category for me. Good stuff.

In the End... Melting the Ice was a fun and sexy love story. I had a good time reading it, now want to pick up the rest of the series. I love a good sports romance and this one completely fit the bill.

Favorite Quotes:

"I suppose the first thing I need to do is measure you."
His eyes gleamed and she could read the dirty thoughts in his head as if he were telegraphing them from his brain directly to hers.
"No, not that. Already seen it."
"Yeah, but one, you haven't seen it in a very long time. And two, have you ever measured it?"

Just like now, as he pulled off his shirt, revealing a body she had spent hours exploring, and years remembering.
Except now that he'd stripped down to his boxers, she realized how much he'd changed since the last time. He'd been gorgeous then, a young man just waiting to fulfill his destiny.
Now he was the man she'd always known he'd become. His body had filled out, become leaner in spots, more muscled in others. And as she forced herself down the stairs and came closer, she realized he bore scars he hadn't before, because she still remembered mapping that body all those years ago, touching every part of him, committing every inch of his skin to memory.

Hope Flames was a good story. It was fine. It had sweet moments, sexy moments, and it had a lot of fun moments. I liked it, had absolutely no issues with it....

Hope Flames just didn't stand out for me. I'm not sure why, other than the fact that I've read so many books with a similar feel in recent months. We have a good girl heroine who's afraid to love again. A good guy hero who's a commitment phobe but totally up for hassle-free sex. The two connect, are intensely attracted to one another, but because of commitment issues, fight it. There's a big moment that wakes them up to the opportunity for love, they take it.

Looking back at what I've just said, I know I must sound terribly trite with this review, and I don't mean to. I'm just being perfectly honest and that's it. Hope Flames was enjoyable. I liked Burton's writing. And I will say that I did enjoy the humor. I just wasn't sucked into the story. I may look back on this book in the future and feel differently. I hope I feel more enthusiasm because honestly, there wasn't a thing "wrong" with it. I do know that the sneak peek of book two has me interested. Many readers will love it. I was looking for a story to completely pull me in and that just didn't happen. I still say, give it a try.

"Oh, for heaven's sake. Haven't they seen two people kiss before?"
"Not like that, apparently," Jane said, stifling a laugh.
"This is ridiculous. I wasn't mauling him. I even left his clothes on.:
"So what you're saying is, you wanted to strip him down, straddle him, and have your way with him in his police cruiser, but you used restraint. Or was it that you used restraints on him? Do tell."
Emma glared at Chelsea. "You are not funny."
"To the contrary. I crack myself up all the time."
