When shy Midwestern transplant Gina gets dragged out to Fleet Week, NYC's hookup central, she expects to spend the night avoiding eye contact with annoying drunks. Instead she meets Tom, a Southern gentleman turned Navy sailor, who talks literature with her while their friends get schwasted. But he's only in town for one week, then he'll be sailing out of her life forever.

Gina's not normally the type to start something she can't finish. And Tom keeps insisting he doesn't want to drag her into his "mess," whatever that means. But when they strike on the perfect solution ― one week of total abandon before they part ways forever ― even practical, tight-laced Gina finds it hard to resist...

I first heard about the event, Fleet Week, from watching Sex and the City. An entire week of seamen (lol) docked and looking for action in NYC sounds like a lot of fun, and a great center to a story. And it was, particularly for a novella. The limited amount of time for the men and women provides a great motive for a fast-paced story.

Fleet Week was a fun, and obviously quick read. I liked the two main characters, Gina and Tom. They are both more reserved than their friends and weren't necessarily looking for a quick hook-up. That's not to say that they didn't embrace the opportunity, though. The story is told entirely through Gina's perspective, and with his closed off demeanor, Tom was a bit hard to read. Once he comes clean with Gina, Tom was a good romantic lead, both sweet and sexy. And when these two went for it, they really let it fly. Sex, hot and rough sex, in public places was what these two had in mind. I loved these scenes, the author did a great job. It's clear that with their situation, these two are trying not to make a strong emotional connection. It's also clear that they are failing at that.

Fleet Week does not get wrapped up with a neat bow. Tom and Gina's story was open-ended, and while that's frustrating, it is also realistic and I can appreciate that. I'm definitely curious to see what the author does with these two. I'm obviously hoping for a happy ending for Tom and Ginny.

"So what are you doing here?" she couldn't help but ask.

  1. Open endings can be the more realistic approach sometimes, but it can still frustrate me. I guess I just like everything to be wrapped up well. But this does sounds fun otherwise. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Andrea! Lovely review as always. :)

  2. I like open endings that are realistic. I mean, life it one big open ending never knowing what comes next. This sounds fun, and it's short so it's quick and easy to read. Great review!!

  6. Wonderful review, Andrea. I like the idea behind this, but I don't care for open endings. Sounds like their story continues though? I never knew anything about Fleet Week. Wow!

Have fun with Faye and Chace, Andrea. I'm still reading Breath, because I had to set aside for some review books. I'm a little over half way through and loving it still. :)

  7. This sounds like my kind of book! There's something about a hot sailor! Whew! This book sounds all kinds of steamy. Great Review, and I love the quotes you chose. I'm glad that the story was realistic. Maybe the next book will have Tom's Point of view.

  8. Seamen and flooding the docks!?!?!?!?!

Hahaha! I'm the only one who probably thinks that's funny.

I have friends and a few cousins who are seafarers so I'm sure I can relate to this to an extent. I'm thinking the open ended ending has something to do with the fate of their relationship, like a long distance thing or see you when I see you? yeah that would suck but it looks like they had some good times together.

    Happy weekend!
