We’d both gone missing at one point, but Claire had one thing I didn’t. Someone to notice. So why was I the one still here and she the one still gone?
Nineteen year old Megan Smith has spent the past year working in a small town diner in the middle of nowhere. Life is quiet, simple, safe. Then comes the news that her look-a-like has gone missing.

Claire.

Still damaged both physically and mentally, Megan's not looking to be noticed. Wherever she goes from here, it's a road she needs to take alone. But when Nickolas Ellis takes the job as the new nightshift cook, it scares her how easily her defenses crumble down, down, down for him. But there are secrets she can't bear to share with just anyone, unspeakable acts that continue to haunt, and when the similarities of Claire’s abduction couples with the fear of an unwanted visitor in town, the urge to run before it all happens again intensifies, threatening the only happiness Megan's ever found.
New Adult Romantic Suspense / Realistic Fiction
Recommended for 17+ for mature and disturbing situations, language and sexual content.

The synopsis for Nearly Broken is vague, and I love that. As long as I know what sort of book to expect, I am okay with going into it blind. This works particularly well when the books is a Romantic Suspense. Having said that, I am terrified of spoiling Nearly Broken, because the unveiling of the clues about the main character Megan's life, and that of Claire's, is what made this book so intriguing for me. To keep from dealing spoilers, this review will be vague.

Nearly Broken was a well-written, mysterious and surprising story about a young woman who's life is not what it seems. From the moment I met Megan, I could tell that something was off about her life. It's clear right away that she is in hiding, but from who and why is not clear. Soon enough, new people come into Megan's life, the mystery of her past and identity begins to unfold, a new life opens up, and devastation follows.

As a character, Megan wasn't an open book. She doesn't lay all of her life story out in the narrative, it's more guarded. Having the past she does, it's very easy to understand why she's a mystery. I loved how the author slowly let Megan's past come to light. Once it did, I was shocked. I expected a heartbreaking past, but nothing like what I got. I know a lot of reviewers (myself included sometimes) mention our love for strong for strong heroines, those who kick butt and just keep moving forward no matter what. But that's not exactly realistic, in my opinion, and it doesn't make the character human with the wide range of emotions we feel in terrible situations. Megan is a character who had every right to feel devastated, to scream, cry, and break down. And she did that sometimes. Then she would pull herself up and move on as best she could. But even though she went forward bravely, that doesn't mean she (and any other character) does not reserve the right to become overwhelmed at times. My point is, healing is a process, sometimes one that never ends, and in my opinion the author did a responsible job of writing this character who'd gone through such horror, and did the best she could every day.

Nick, the man who comes into Megan's life, is a little bit harder to talk about without spoiling. Let me just say that this man was a beautiful example of love, understanding, devotion, and I adored his every moment in Nearly Broken.

Nearly Broken is a book that I found enlightening and to be a very worthwhile story in today's society. And I will also say that it became difficult to read at times. There is a warning in the synopsis that mentions disturbing situations, and they are.  I do feel that the author handled these situations very realistically and responsibly and not in an explicit manner, but just want to point out this out for those who need to avoid.

Nearly Broken is a story filled with mystery and suspense, but also a beautiful love story. I recommend it to anyone looking for an intriguing story that will leave you hanging on until the end.

  10. I really enjoyed this story, too, Andrea. The last 25% shattered me though. I don't know if you've read The Dark Duet series (Captive in the Dark) but I think the last 25% was comparable in terms of darkness. My head and emotions are still reeling! The twist took me by surprise, too! And I adore Nick, just like you! He was beyond amazing. I hope things get better for them in the next book. Wonderful review! I'm not going to enter the giveaway because I was part of this tour on the adult blog I'm on. :)

  17. Excellent Review Friend! You totally have my interest piqued! This book sounds awesome! I love suspense where nothing is as it seems, and you have to put the pieces together to figure out what's going on! I agree about not needing kick but characters all the time. My main need is for a character to be fully developed, and seem "real," and as real people we have our vulnerability, and various issues, and I love when character's reflect that! Thanks for sharing!!!!
