"Kids and cupcakes are the perfect recipe!"-Sophie and Katerine, stars of TLC's DC Cupcakes

Meet Sadie.

When she's not mixing it up on the basketball court, she's mixing the perfect batter with her friends in the cupcake club. Sadie's definitely no stranger to competition, but the oven mitts are off when the club is chosen to appear on Battle of the Bakers, the ultimate cupcake competition on TV.

But the real battle happens off camera when the club's baking business starts losing money.

With the clock ticking and the cameras rolling, will the club and their cupcakes rise to the occasion?

Sheryl Berk, New York Times bestselling author of Soul Surfer, and her nine-year-old daughter, Carrie, a cupcake connoisseur who has reviewed confections from the world in her Carrie's Cupcakes Critiques newsletter, have cooked up a delightful new series sure to be a treat.

Winner Bakes All was a really sweet, fun book with positive messages. I intended to read this with my seven year old son, but he's decided girls are gross. *sigh* I have an almost five-year old daughter who actually said she wants to be a "cupcake baker" when she grows up, but she's not quite ready for a book of this size. So I ended up reading Winner Bakes All on my own, but that was fine because I found it to be a great story for kids.

The story follows Sadie, one of the founders of Peace, Love, Cupcakes. Sadie's family is having a tough time financially, and it's causing a strain on her parents' relationship. Sadie wants to help, so she and her friends enter a baking competition to win the much needed prize money. The girls run into many obstacles throughout the story, but their spirit and determination never stops. As a parent, I found it very interesting, and important, that the story touched on the topic of the stresses that hit parents, often affect their children. I remember this as a kid, and I often don't even realize that my own kids pick up on even the slightest nonverbal cues. This was a great reminder to me that, even if I don't want my kids to feel my stress, they will, and it's a natural part of life. What is important is how you let it effect you. So that, in combination with the spirit of the story, being never give up, made this book really shine for me.

I won't lie, I was in this for the cupcakes. Just reading the descriptions made my mouth water! I loved that the book also includes recipes for some of the cupcakes mentioned in the story.

Winner Bakes All is a very positive, but also fun, story for kids.

  3. This sounds like a really great book. I love when books have a great message in them. My daughter is starting to enjoy reading books a few chapters at a time with me now so she might be able to handle this. Hmmm I'm weird so my favorite cupcake is a maple bacon cupcake. They are so good. Second choice would be red velvet. :)

  4. Are there other flavors besides chocolate?!? ;) This sounds like such a fun book and I love that it offers a positive message as well. I have a 12 year old daughter that would LOVE this book. She's taking home ec (although it's now called family & consumer sciences! ;) and she's really into baking. Thanks for sharing this one, Andrea!

  5. Not entering the giveaway since reading to my male cats isn't the same as kids...so I'm told. ;P But I love me some cupcakes!!

I think my current favorite is red velvet with cream cheese frosting.

  8. Nothing makes me happier than a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting! I do have a lady at work that makes the best Brownie cupcakes. It is a brownie base and the frosting tastes just like vanilla ice cream that is just starting to melt. She drizzles them with hot fudge - oh so unbelievably good.

Thanks for the great giveaway - my daughters would love this one too!

  15. Aw, the cover and premise of this book are so cute! Love that, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. You also really can't go wrong with cupcakes, hee hee.

Someday you'll have to remind your son of this "girls are gross" conversation. ;) Or tell it to his wife, hah.

  16. Aww, this sounds very sweet, Andrea. You are so right about kids picking up on our stresses in life and picking up on non-verbal clues as well. It's so hard because you want to be the safe place and give your kids the sense of security they need. But they have to learn to deal with life's stresses as well.

The cupcakes you mention make me think of Bittersweet a story that had me drooling for cupcakes throughout. Wonderful review. :)
