WAITING ON WEDNESDAY

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's WoW selection is...

Something Like Normal

When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero. ~From GoodReads

Why I'm Waiting ~ I think it's interesting that these books, of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are starting to come out. It reminds me of the stories from my parents' generation of returning Vietnam veterans. Also...it's a love story.

Expected publication: June 19th 2012 by Bloomsbury USA Childrens

  6. As an Iraq and Afghanistan vet, still serving out my current tour in Kabul, this seems like a natural fit – thanks much for your selection and brining this important topic to light.

  9. This sounds like a really good book. I had almost requested it on NetGalley,(I think it was on NetGalley anyways) but with so many books to read already I didn't. I don't read a whole lot of contemporaries, but I have been trying to get more into them lately. It's been a bit touch and go with them. Great pick hon!!

  10. I just added this one to my TBR yesterday after reading another GR user's review. A little off the beaten path for me, but it's definitely caught my interest now. Great pick!

  11. I've been avoiding books about soldiers/returning soldiers just because I was afraid they'd get political. Maybe I'm just being oversensitive, ha. I can't wait to see what you think of this one, if you like it maybe I'll give it a read.

  12. I like soldier story but why does every single one have to have PTSD. I know PTSD happens but literally every book like this I've seen has them wounded from war. Would be nice to just see a guy come back happily after serving his country to find out that his girlfriend is a ho and life has changed. Then of course his struggle with it. Sorry I ranted but the whole every soldier has PTSD thing pisses me off.

  15. I'm starting to see more books about soldiers returning from Iraq/Afghanistan too. I guess this generation is experiencing what our parents saw during the Vietnam era. I have a brother who's served the US Army in Iraq and Afghanistan and I'm nervous/anxious to see how he'll deal with things once he returns. He's had to go to both countries back and forth for the last 5 years that I'm sure it'll be hard for him to get back to "normal".

  16. Kristin - Happily? I think, no matter your feelings on war, that no one can "happily" serve a tour in a war. I think every war veteran experiences trauma to some extent. This guy in the book saw his best friend die. My cousin, a veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, had to kill a young teen who pulled a gun on him and a fellow soldier and was about to shoot them. It doesn't matter if it was the enemy. It was a child.
You're entitled to your opinion, obviously. And I'm always happy for comments. But I had to respond to something I feel so strongly about.

  17. I just added this book to my TBR a few days ago. This might be a really hard book to read (intense) given the subject matter, but I still want to read it. Great pick Andrea :-)

  25. So can not wait for this one! I usually am not a fan of books that have anything to do with the war because it is not something I believe we should be a part of but this one might just change my mind. I do agree with you that there are several books coming out soon that have elements of a person returning or not returning home from war and what that implies for the friends, family, and girlfriends/boyfriends of these people.

Thanks for showcasing this one, I hope you enjoy it once you get a chance to read it. :)
