Here's mine
That's right. I chose Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer. Before you start throwing things and calling me an idiot, hear me out. When I read Twilight, I had just moved, became a stay at home mom to a two year old and had a new baby. I was exhausted, isolated, and apathetic. So, when my Mom of all people begged me to read this book about vampires, I was more than a little skeptical. I was not a fan of YA or paranormal books at all. Boy, was I wrong. I actually enjoyed eating my words over this one.
Once I had read the series twice, I decided to venture a little further into the YA/paranormal genre. I was so scared to try anything else. But then I saw a book that was blurbed by Stephanie Meyer. I thought, If Stephanie Meyer blurbed it, it must be good. I tried the book, and loved it. I devoured the entire series. That book was City of Bones, the series was The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.
That one book, Twilight, sent me on a whole new trajectory. I went from Cassandra Clare to Andrea Cremer, to Julie Kagawa... the list is endless. All because of that one book.

I'm going to have to agree with you on twilight.. I had read the Harry potter books, which i loved, but went right back to reading adult novels.
ReplyDeleteWhen I had Aubrey.. funny we read twilight about the same time.. She was a baby at the time. I was home on maternity leave, and figured why not, I have nothing else to do.. the news was all hyping up about breaking dawn hitting shelves.. so I started reading them.. I had Aubrey in one arm and my book in the other.. Blew through them, and from there, I continued to venture into the YA world of books. :0)
I think a lot of people got started with Twilight. :)
I made my grandmother read them.. she loved them. and I continue to mail her other Ya books to read. lol

You know what? I loved Twilight. I think a lot of people did. I think the negative talk about is largely because of overexposure. Kinda Twilight Fatigue!
ReplyDeleteI know there are people out there who hated it, and that's SO OK. At this point, I'm a little fatigued with it myself, but i enjoyed it so much at the time.
When I read it, I'd not really read anything in a while, and it was what really triggered my reading obsession. I'm exactly like you--it 'sent me on a whole new trajectory', too, and completely opened my eyes to a WHOLE lot of other amazing stuff available.
I also think that anything that gets people reading, or talking about books is a Very Good Thing.
I loved the Twilight series too. There is nothing wrong with a book that helps you escape, especially with two little ones at home. You just can't read War and Peace when you have a new baby!
