I honestly have felt as if I am one of the few unenthusiastic readers of the Bloodlines series. Yes, it is well-written. Yes, I have given the books good (4-star) ratings. But, I never truly felt strongly about Bloodlines or The Golden Lily. The fact that I am a huge fan of Vampire Academy is what kept me reading.
So maybe my review doesn't mean much, to solid fans of the series. But it might for those who, like me, need a reason to keep going. The Indigo Spell was going to be my last chance for this series. I may be in the minority, but I am not a big fan of Sydney Sage. I get that she is who she is, but she also happens to be a character I found frustrating and boring. In fact, I found all of the characters, save Adrian, to be pretty forgettable. I'm not going to elaborate on how Sydney changes, but I will say that she didn't leave me needing to headbutt the nearest wall. I may never be totally in love with Sydney, but I like her a lot and now have mucho respect for her and her brave decisions.
Adrian is why I kept going. We all know that he is unbelievably witty and charming. I never wanted him with Rose, but I wanted him to be happy. But what Adrian also is, now, is solid. Solid doesn't mean boring, or that he is now a follower. Solid means that Adrian can be counted on, that when you need him, he will be there. (Sometimes with a drink in hand.) So yay (!) for Adrian's character growth.
Overall I found The Indigo Spell to be a much more enjoyable story than Bloodlines and The Golden Lily. I felt like the issues in the vampire and alchemist world were finally moving along and really rocking. I felt as though Sydney and Adrian were finally progressing. There is a whole witchy side story that I felt was unnecessary, but otherwise, I'm much happier with The Indigo Spell.
I totally loved the ending (!) and will happily continue the Bloodlines series.

In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next. Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, the Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive—this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.
**No spoilers for Bloodlines, The Golden Lily, or The Indigo Spell**
