Seventeen-year-old Lacey Kind doesn’t have the guts to talk to cute boys, isn’t a size two, and would rather stay home and listen to music than go to a party. But in the summer before her first year of college, she ends up thousands of miles away from home, in the back of a tour bus, underneath the half-naked body of the hottest teen rock star in the country.

When Lacey and her best friend Trina sneak into a Boston nightclub to see their favorite band, they not only get to watch their rock gods perform for the first time, but score a chance to meet the band too. Lacey’s heart races as she comes face-to-face with her idol, nineteen-year-old lead singer, Logan Shire.

The girls charm their way into being hired to sell merchandise on Lansdowne’s first summer tour. As “merch girls” Lacey and Trina quickly find themselves transported from their ordinary, suburban life to an exhilarating few months on the road. But they soon realize that life on the road isn’t always a smooth ride...

Merch Girl was a quick, sweet(-ish) story. What comes to mind, for me, is Teenage Dream. By that I mean, this was a story that was pure teenage wish-fulfillment. The same story I would be written featuring myself and Jordan Knight back in the early 1990s. It's the story many of us would have written in our teen years. Fans of an up-and-coming band meet the guys, hit it off, guys invite girls to go on tour, love ensues.

I liked Merch Girl, I did. I don't feel that it dug particularly deep into the realities of falling in love with a young rock star, and all that entails, the good and the bad.. There were moments in which the pitfalls did impact the characters, but it really seemed to only skim the surface and was easily resolved.

The writing in Merch Girl was good and the story wrapped up nicely. I feel like I wasn't a perfect fit for this, because it did feel a bit on the "young" side for my reading preferences right now. I'm sure as a teen I would have loved it.

About the author
Rebecca Lewis is the author of the Young Adult novel, Merch Girl, and a lover of all things music! She's been writing stories since middle school and penned her first fanfic about a semi-popular boyband in 1997 (if you search hard enough you can still find it stuck in the Interwebs!)

Her passion for music and writing brought her to Boston University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Communication. During her college career, she interned for various record labels in Boston and New York City, sold merch for some local bands, worked at record stores, and did a whole lot of grassroots marketing.

She currently resides in Florida with her husband and puppy.

  2. So maybe it's a great book for teens. Not sure it's a me book, though. Great review.

  6. Lol, Andrea! A Jordan Knight fan? Hee hee! Gosh I guess we all have our teenage fan girl crushes, and dreams of how things would play out if they saw us and fell madly in love. Too bad this one didn't smack with the realism to make it feel believable. Wonderful review, Andrea. :)

  7. I was a Jeremy Jordan fan! Although I don't think I'll be a great groupie.

  8. Jordan was hot, but I felt I had a better chance with Joe. LOL I haven't been big on YA lately either. Sounds like a good read for an early teen.

  9. Hmm, Jordan Knight, huh?? ;) Interesting how YA doesn't always work for those of us who aren't YA. I'm glad you liked it but also glad to know it's something I might recommend to my daughters and their friends.

  11. Oh, I hate it when a YA book feels a bit too youngish, if that makes any sense. I guess that's where we have to draw the line. I'm glad you were able to breeze through it though. Great review!

  12. Great Mini-Review! You made me think of who my celebrity crushes were when I was a kid. LOL My niece and Best Friend's daughter are always asking me for YA recommendations, and this sounds like a book that they might both like :)
