Review ~ Shadowlander (Shadow Sisters, #1), by Theresa Meyers

sisters, three rules to live by, one big problem.

O'Connell Family Rule #1: Don't let the Fae know you see them.
O'Connell Family Rule #2: Don't talk to the Fae.
O'Connell Family Rule #3: Never, ever follow them.

Most people only believe what they can see. Gifted with the ability to see the deep, dark fae of Shadowland, Catherine Rowan Mary O'Connell would prefer not to. When the fae abduct her friend Maya, Cate breaks the sacred O'Connell Family Rules and sets a trap for the handsome fae who haunts her every step.

Rook, High Court Advisor to the Shadow King, has been following Cate since she was sixteen. When Cate reveals herself as one of the fabled "Seers", Rook is stunned—she is one of the few that can permanently open the gates between their worlds. If he turns her over to the Shadow King, his court will rule the human realm.

Cate knows she has precious little time to find Maya. By midnight, the glamour of Mid-Summer's Eve will fade, leaving her trapped forever in the Shadowland, but Maya's abductor won't give up the woman he's mesmerized easily.

The midnight hour is almost at hand. Cate must choose: her freedom or her destiny.(From GoodReads)

In One Word ~ Steamy

Shadowlander is a delicious little novella packed full of action, intrigue and romance. Author Theresa Meyer wasted no time delving into the heart of the story of Cate and Rook.

The fae world created in Shadowlander is dark, edgy and unique. Meyer managed to make her own mark on a world that is heavily represented in paranormal writing. The setting of this fae world was by turns vibrant and ominous, with it's own set of rules and danger.

The story is told in alternating viewpoints of Cate and Rook. Sometimes, I find that technique a little disorienting, but Meyers did such a great job of switching narrator, it felt seamless. I think the alternation actually made me like the story more because I got a sense of the motivations and thoughts of both characters, keeping me on board with both of them.

I'll admit, though I am a huge fan of Young Adult books, sometimes I like something a little more, ahem, grown up. Shadowlander is most definitely a book for adults. Talk about a steamy, sexy story. Cate and Rook had instant chemistry that kept me reading anxiously, wondering if, and when, they would combust!

My only complaint about Shadowlander is that it was too short. I would have loved for this story to go on and on, with a little more background thrown in, also. But, I think that actually speaks well for the author. Always leave the reader wanting more, right?

Shadowlander is a sexy, romantic morsel of escapism that makes for a great, quick read. I can't wait for another slice.

Favorite Quote~

"For an instant, time stretched and slowed as he waited for her response. Even the glittering trails of
the smallest fae, who looked like bits of dandelion fluff on the wind, appeared to hang suspended in
midair. Once she slipped her hand into his, there'd be no going back."

  1. Excellent review! I love fae stories. Fairies can be just as dark as other supernatural baddies, and it sounds like Theresa Meyers played it right. And steamy always helps! ;-)

  3. Okay, so when I clicked to read your review, I immediately noticed the cover. Is it just me? Or does she look like she's getting ready for that shadow to spank her.

"Hey there, shadow figure.." as she steals a glance over her shoulder.. "My rear is ready for some smacking!"

Then I scroll down to see your In One Word is Steamy.... My suspicions are confirmed. lol

I know exactly what you mean with the YA books, sometimes I like to read something with a little action.

  4. I would want to read something like this because the premise sounds really good, but I am one to shy away from adult PNR, usually. Not into the steamy, heated stuff. I love when reviewers of it will reveal just how much heat there is because that makes it easier for me to decide whether I want to land or pass on it. Thanks for that, Andrea!
