The Rundown

Okay! Lots to cover here. I got a lot of exciting review books this week, starting with Kiss Me Like This from Bella Andre. Huge BA fan here, so I'm excited to read this over the weekend. Another book that has me happy is Losing Control from Jen Frederick. This book is being released in serial form, which I enjoy, but am also excited to read it in one swoop. Rusty Nailed! Simon and Caroline are back! Isn't the cover for Long, Hot Texas Summer pretty? For the record, that phrase takes me back to the time I thought it would be okay to wear black jeans in South Texas in July. It was 110 degrees. Desired is the third book in the Club Sin series. I recommend this series for readers who like the BDSM on the light side. It's so good! White Collared is a serial that's coming out over the summer. I got all four installments from the publicist. It looks good, yeah? I like Jennifer Faye's books, and look forward to The Return of the Rebel.

As for purchases, I think I did good again this week. I think I had True in ebook, but since I have a print of Sweet (which I loved! review to come), I wanted a print copy. It's so good. The rest of the books were all $0.99. Hootie's review (and the cover!) convinced me to buy Playing for Love at Deep Haven. Fans of James's FBI/US Attorney series say A Lot Like Love is one of the best. I'm excited to read Wild Child, but it's set in Arkansas and being from AR, that makes me nervous. Who here's read it?

I got quite a few freebies this time. I'm really excited about Talk This Way because I adore the Plum Orchard series (it's about a phone sex business!). Also dying to read The Passion of Patrick MacNeill. I love Virginia Kantra's books!

SEXY SATURDAYS: DEVIL'S GAME by JOANNA WYLDE

Devil's Game (Reapers MC, #3)Series: Reapers MC #3
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Berkley Trade
Publication Date: 6/3/13
Format: Paperback
Pages: 352
Source: Publisher
Rating: 4 stars

Liam “Hunter” Blake hates the Reapers MC. Born and raised a Devil’s Jack, he knows his duty. He’ll defend his club from their oldest enemies—the Reapers—using whatever weapons he can find. But why use force when the Reapers’ president has a daughter who’s alone and vulnerable? Hunter has wanted her from the minute he saw her, and now he has an excuse to take her.

Em has lived her entire life in the shadow of the Reapers. Her overprotective father, Picnic, is the club’s president. The last time she had a boyfriend, Picnic shot him. Now the men in her life are far more interested in keeping her daddy happy than showing her a good time. Then she meets a handsome stranger—a man who isn't afraid to treat her like a real woman. One who isn't afraid of her father. His name is Liam, and he’s The One.

Or so she thinks.

Sometimes I have a hard time shutting down my brain. I'm one of those people who might look like I'm staring vacantly at the wall, but I assure you, my brain rarely shuts down. Given that, I can find myself having a difficult time settling into a story, particularly when the characters are kind of insane and their lives are even more so. For instance, when I started watching Sons of Anarchy, I was all about Jax Teller and that sweet ass of his. But then...I realized, Oh no. Jax Teller is a dealer, a killer, and even worse, a cheater! I found myself focusing on this, ranting that Tara should get her and the boys away from that insanity. (lord was I right about that) It got so bad that my husband wanted me to take back up with staring at Charlie Hunnam's ass (and that back of his!) rather than going on and on about what was wrong with these morally corrupt characters. So I did.

This is where I found myself at the beginning of Devil's Game. If you've read Reaper's Legacy, then you know Em and Liam have a shaky start. Well, shaky is an understatement when you consider Liam sneakily connects with her Em in an effort to work the Reapers. You see, there's a whole lot of politics in MCs, and even though they're all about living and riding free, they're all totally tangled up in egos and territory. But anyway, the timeline of Devil's Game coincides with Reaper's Legacy, and we get Liam's and Em's points-of-view on hers and Sophie's kidnapping, along with the before and the aftermath, and how despite all this, Em and Liam really fall for each other. Nothing says romance like a stalker kidnapper, yes? Well, in this case...um...yeah. (just go with it)

The Reaper's MC series is filled with strong-willed, hilarious, ass-kicking women. In the first two books, I was happily surprised by how uncompromising Marie and Sophie were with their men, and how neither settled for anything less than honesty and faithfulness. I appreciate that Wylde has continued to give us this world in which the men run the club, but the women take no shit from them at the same time. It says a lot that out of these women, Em Hayes is my favorite. Not only is she a Reaper woman, her dad is the President, and that makes for a lonely life on the guy-front. Em is a total badass, ass-kicker. She doesn't go around with an attitude, but she will take care of herself and the people she loves with no hesitation and through any means necessary. She's hilarious and brave. Through her kidnapping and realizing how very little she knows about the issues that do, in fact, affect her, Em begins to realize that she deserves more. She deserves to be kept in the loop regarding details that affect her life and safety. She deserves a life in which she makes choices for herself. And she deserves a man who will fight for her.

That man willing to fight for her? Liam "Hunter" Blake. A Devil's Jack. If you're familiar with the series, then you know Devil's Jack is the rival of the Reapers. They've had a sort of truce, but it's about to get torn all to hell. Liam eyes Em with the intention of using her to help make peace, but of course, falls for her too. I hate the dishonesty that started their relationship, and I won't pretend it's okay to kidnap the girl you want to be with, and do lots of sexy stuffs with her, but hey, this is a story. And believe me, Em makes sure he pays. Painfully. I liked that Liam's point-of-view made it clear that he would never really hurt her physically, and that hurting her emotionally is painful for him. I won't say that he didn't kind of disgust me at times, because you know what, he really did. But it's par for the course apparently when you live the life he and Em do. As Liam falls harder and harder for Em, he doesn't magically become a sweet, sensitive man. He's still pretty vulgar and can sometimes say stupid crap that gets him into trouble. But it was also really sweet to see this big, dangerous man brought to his knees by the only woman for him.

Despite how uncomfortable I felt at times while reading, Devil's Game is probably my favorite book in the series. The story was well-developed and from what I imagine, very honest and true to the MC life. There's a nice blend of action and love story, with a lot of humor thrown in. I'm so very ready for Picnic's story, Reaper's Stand.

So, here comes a big dose of honesty. I don't try to convince people to read books they won't like. That's not my job. What I do strive for is to explain why I like/dislike a book, and let you make that decision for yourself. If you're looking for a story with sweet romance, with characters who you will always like and understand, you're probably not going to be happy reading Devil's Game. And that's fine! But if you go into this book looking for an escape, knowing that the characters can be absolutely batshit crazy, say and do things that are can be unpalatable at times, but at the end of the day, love each other in their own way, hard and rough...then reading Devil's Game is an excellent time to be had.

To sum it up: if you have a hard time telling your Real World Self to pipe down, you might have a hard time with Devil's Game. But if -like I did - you tell that bitch to take a hike for a few hours, you just might find yourself in the middle of a really excellent slice of sexy fun.

I'd just had incredible, indescribable sex with the hottest guy I'd ever met - and I was still a fucking virgin.
  Jesus. Just like high school.
I couldn't give this shit away.

I'd given almost a decade of my life to the club. Never complained, never held back. I'd done terrible things for the Devil's Jacks. I'd keep doing them too.
All I wanted in return was one thing. One girl. Of course it had to be the girl who could start a fucking war with a phone call...
I still wouldn't give her up.

MY THOUGHTS ON: LOVER MINE, LOVER UNLEASHED, LOVER REBORN, LOVER AT LAST

Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #8)Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood #8
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Signet Eclipse
Publication Date: 11/30/14
Format: Paperback
Pages: 636

Rating: 5 stars

JOHN MATTHEW HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE HE WAS found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was -- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war between vampires and their enemies, he will need to call upon both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate -- and rescue his one true love.

Lover Mine is by far my favorite book in the series since Lover Awakened (Zsadist's book). That and Lover Eternal are the only two I might like more. Might.

I have a lot of reasons to love this book. First of all, I finally know for sure I was right about the Darius/John Matthew connection, though I wish it had been confirmed outright. I never imagined when I met John that I would ever have this strong affection for him. I assumed  he would always be a peripheral character. But the longer the series went on, and the more I got to know him, I needed this poor boy to have his happy ending. When he set his lustful thoughts, and then his heart, on Xhex, I knew exactly how that happy ending would work out. I knew it wouldn't be easy, it was rough, but I hoped we could get there. I didn't even like Xhex for a while, she was too rough and mean. But I got to know her better. Honestly, every woman, no matter how tough, wants and deserves to be loved.

This book also had one of the most heart-wrenching, slow-building love stories: yes, Qhuinn and Blay. These two are making me so, so sad right now! I want Qhuinn and Blay to be together, but I'm happy Blay is trying to move forward with Saxon. He gave Qhuinn every chance to claim him, and a man can only take so much. I'm dying to get to their book.

Lover Mine had some huge bombshells! First you get the look at the past, with Darius and Tohr meeting and forming that deep bond. Then you get the search for a lost female, and how that story basically forms the basis for John and Xhex's future. That was deep. And then the huge reveal at the end. I started screaming, first alone and then at my friends. I love that Ward totally drops those out of nowhere.

Lover Mine totally renewed my enthusiasm for the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

And this tattoo? It was a stake shoved into the territory he was in. His declaration that even if Xhex hadn't wanted him, she was his mate and he would honor her, alive or dead. Here was the thing: People felt the way they did and it wasn't their fault or yours if the connection was one-sided. It just...was.

You are so beautiful, he mouthed. But of course she couldn't see his lips. Guess he was going to have to show her.
John took a step forward and another and another. And it wasn't just him going toward her. She met him in the middle, her form encased in the shadow thrown by his body and yet nevertheless the only thing he saw. As they came together, his chest was pumping and so was his heart. I love you...

Payne, twin sister of the Black Dagger Brother Vishous, suffers a devastating injury, and brilliant human surgeon Manuel Manello is called in to save her. Their attraction is instant, and as powerful as it is dangerous. But as human and vampire worlds collide, a centuries- old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in jeopardy.

I was all set to give Lover Unleashed two stars. It wasn't quite as rough for me as Lover Enshrined (Phury's book) but it was really annoying. I was never a fan of Manny's, but was excited for another female badass with Payne. Welp, that didn't happen, but hey, if I ever break my spine now I know that Magic Peen will cure me so I'm calling this a win. Once again, the convenience with which the obstacles that keep our lovers apart are solved makes me cringe.

What saved Lover Unleashed was Vishous and Jane. I didn't realize that they weren't 100% okay, until they weren't. I guess I just assumed V was cool now, and that Jane was fine with some hard play. I really liked that they came through the drama stronger than before, but I feel like Ward is just teasing us with Butch and V. If she wasn't going to let them get it on and be together four or five books ago, then just go ahead and stop dangling that underlying attraction between them. I think I might have liked the Band of Bastards as a part of the series. I don't know. Well, it's not so much that I liked it as it's a lot better than reading about the lessers.

Karen at For What It's worth reviewed Lover Unleashed here. Her review says everything I was thinking, and everything I hadn't thought of yet, and said it perfectly. Warning: this review is flat-out hilarious, especially when she calls Manny out for his tendency for premature ejaculation. Hee!

All I'm saying is Tohr's book is next and I better love it or I'll.....well, I'll keep reading but I'm going to bitch about it a whole lot.

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward’s “different, creative, dark, violent, and flat-out amazing”* Black Dagger Brotherhood series continues as a vampire warrior crosses the line between life and death…into a world of dark dreams and darker desires.

Ever since the death of his shellan, Tohrment has been a heartbroken shadow of the vampire leader he once was. Brought back to the Brotherhood by a self-serving fallen angel, he fights again with ruthless vengeance, unprepared for a new tragedy. Seeing his beloved in dreams—trapped in a cold, isolated netherworld—Tohr turns to the angel Lassiter to save his former mate. The only way to rescue her is for Tohr to love another. As war with the lessers rages, and a new clan of vampires vie for the Blind King’s throne, Tohr struggles between an unforgettable past and a hot, passion-filled future. But can his heart let go and set all of them free?

Oh... this book. I really liked Lover Reborn, thank goodness. I do find myself struggling with what to say here and I have no idea why, so bear with me.

I knew this was going to be heavy story, given how distraught Tohr has been since his wife's death. And then when I found out who the heroine was? That was crazy! And I liked it.

Lover Reborn was a very deep and emotional story. We have him dealing with the effects of not letting his wife and unborn child move on, what that's doing to him. I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to lose my husband and a child, and then to be told I have to move on. As far as No'One's story, if you've read Lover Mine then you know her life was horrific, and then to face the world after leaving it so tragically. Their love story was so sad and I did get teared-up several times. Grief can make people cruel; Tohr is proof of that. Even when he was harsh with No'One, I got it why he was that way.

Lassiter, the angel tasked with helping them both was hilarious. I loved every scene he was in. I also loved the secondary plot with Xhex and John Matthew. I've come to appreciate the follow-up with the mated couples, and that it explores what comes after two very strong people in a crazy life marry. I also liked being tortured by this Qhuinn/Blay/Saxton mess. Thank goodness that's about to be resolved because these boys are killing me.

What I did not like was the Band of Bastards. I can only keep up with so many names and this "son of" business. It was like reading the freaking Bible, y'all. (and yes, I have actually read the bible.) I just really don't care much about them, and didn't even try to waste my time figuring out who the hell this Assail guy was and why I should care.

Oh, I almost forgot, we get another weird-ass, explanation-free save for the heroine. *sigh*

Anyway, griping aside, Lover Reborn was a good book. My favorites are still Rhage's, John's and Zsadist's books, but this one was strong. I'm beginning to feel the wind leaving my sails for this series, but definitely plan to hold on for Lover at Last and The King.

It was a universal among males that anytime you saw a guy get it in the nuts, you experienced a shot of phantom pain in your own croquet set.

She frowned. "I care not what you look like. You breathe and your heart beats--that is all that matters to me."
"You have very low standards for males."
"I have no standards for males. For you, however, if there is health and safety, I am at peace."

Lassiter hit pause and clamped a hard hand on his shoulder. "Sit the fuck back. Watch and learn."
"What? How much I hate rom-coms? How 'bout we just stipulate that and let me go."
  "You're going to need this."
"For my second career as a pussy?"

Man, life was complicated. But the truth was simple. He was her home. He was where she belonged.

Qhuinn, son of no one, is used to being on his own. Disavowed from his bloodline, shunned by the aristocracy, he has finally found an identity as one of the most brutal fighters in the war against the Lessening Society. But his life is not complete. Even as the prospect of having a family of his own seems to be within reach, he is empty on the inside, his heart given to another....

Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: The male has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young—just as Qhuinn has always wanted for himself. It’s hard to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. As he’s learned firsthand.

Fate seems to have taken these vampire soldiers in different directions... but as the battle over the race’s throne intensifies, and new players on the scene in Caldwell create mortal danger for the Brotherhood, Qhuinn finally learns the true definition of courage, and two hearts who are meant to be together... finally become one.

My short and not-so-sweet.... I loved Qhuinn and Blay's part in this book. The love and longing between them broke my heart. The sheer torment they each experienced at not having each other made me hurt. The sex was hawt. I loved that these two finally got their happy ending. Without the promise of that, I might have DNF'd this book.

Most of the rest of this book was a waste of my time. Now, I say a waste of my time, because I don't care about the BoB, Assail, Elon, etc. I started to care a teeny bit about Xcor and Layla at the very end, but not enough to even think about.

I know. I'm not nice, but that's my honest take on this book and the latter half of the series. Maybe I read everything too close together, but I just wanted to catch up. Now, I don't care.

Another thing? I was SO into the ending. It was great. But...Qhuinn and Blay deserved more than a Journey "Don't Stop Believing" ending. That was LAME.

On a side note, I have some general observations on this series:

  • Why write a story in 300 hundred pages when you can stretch it out, fill it out with a lot of crap I don't care about and have over 600 pages of skimming material? I can seriously read these books fast when the main couple is featured in one-fourth of the story.
  • If I ever see the word "shitkicker" for the rest of my life, I'm going to kick the shit out of someone.
  • What's with the phrase, "And wasn't that the truth." or "Now wasn't that a kick in the balls." or some stupid variation of those. And what's with the non-question questions?
  • Deus ex machina: "is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object. Depending on how it is done, it can be intended to move the story forward when the writer has "painted themself into a corner" and sees no other way out, to surprise the audience, to bring the tale to a happy ending, or as a comedic device." (according to Wikipedia) This series has the most ridiculous endings that come out of left field. How many times have our heroines been saved with no explanation? Quit pulling these lame-ass endings out of your ass, Ward.
  • I don't care about the BoB any more than I cared about the lesser.
  • Rhage is my favorite brother, his book is also my favorite. Even if you don't agree with me, Jennifer Armentout told me she does, SO I WIN.
  • My second favorite is Lover Mine and John Matthew. I also loved Lover Awakened and Z.
  • I really, really liked: Dark Lover and Wrath, Lover Unbound and Vishous (except for that ending!).
  • I liked: Lover Revealed and Butch, Lover Avenged and Rhev, Lover Reborn and Tohr.
  • I strongly disliked: Lover Enshrined (Phury's book) and Lover Unleashed (Manny and Payne)

I could go on and on and on, but I'll spare you. And myself. I may read The King someday, but I'm going to need enough time to forget how much I was annoyed by the time I finished Lover at Last.

And, sorry to all you hardcore fans. I'll take the next insult on a book I love with a smile, okay?

REVIEW: JANE'S MELODY by RYAN WINFIELD

What boundaries would you cross for true love?

That's the question a grieving mother must answer when she takes in a young street musician she believes can shed light on her daughter's death—only to find herself falling for him. A sexy but touching love story that will leave you both tantalized and in tears, Jane's Melody follows a forty-year-old woman on a romantic journey of rediscovery after years of struggling alone.

Sometimes our greatest gifts come from our greatest pain. And now Jane must decide if it's too late for her to start over, or if true love really knows no limits.

As a mother, I can comprehend the absolute horror of losing a child. What I cannot comprehend is surviving it. In Jane's Melody, we have a mother, Jane, at her daughter's grave site the day after her funeral. As Jane sits in her car and mourns her daughter, she sees a man at Melody's grave, standing in the rain. The man leaves a coin there, then disappears.  Her daughter Melody (hence the title) had a history of addiction and substance abuse, and the two had grown distant. Jane is desperate to understand her daughter's last day, and sensing this man may have answers, she seeks him out.

The man, Caleb Cummings, refuses to answer Jane's questions about Melody. Caleb's sad eyes and troubling situation-he's a homeless musician-has Jane wanting to help him. She offers him a job, in exchange for renovating her overgrown property, she will help him make it to Austin, where he hopes to get his music career going. She also hopes that Caleb will eventually open up about Melody.

Now, you might be thinking, a grieving mother goes after her daughter's guy only days after her death? I'll admit, that thought crossed my path as well. Jane's Melody is not that story; it's not designed to have a morally questionable feel, to have you tied in knots over whether Jane should become involved with Caleb. Assumptions regarding Melody and Caleb aren't as clear-cut as they seem. Jane's Melody is very much a love story, a thoughtful, beautiful story at that, and I never questioned whether these two belonged together, despite the difference in age and lifestyle, their tragic start.

To be honest, though, I was in tears within the first few pages. Given the story, I'm sure that's no surprise. Jane's pain was given such an acute description to the instances of unbearable pain that a mother carries after a child's death. Her thoughts ones that I would imagine in my mind in the same circumstances. But, Jane's Melody is also a joyful story. The joy in life's sweet moments, in fond memories of a daughter before the demons took over, the joy in finding a love in the most unlikely arms. As Caleb renovates the land, Jane's heart undergoes a similar transformation. It was a gorgeous story that had a heavy impact on me. The ending left me smiling and satisfied. I'm so anxious (and a little nervous!) for Jane's Harmony.

Favorite Quote

"Everything I liked about her, I love in you." Jane felt a funny kind of confused, an excitement wrestling with disappointment and grief. "What are you saying?" "I'm saying ever since I saw you I've been attracted to you, Jane. I think about you all the time. Every night. I lay here in this bed at night and wonder if you're awake down the hall. I can't get you out of my head, and I don't even want to."

Losing Control (Kerr Chronicles, #1)Series: Kerr Chronicles #1
Genre: Contemp Romance

Publication Date: Begins 5/27/14

I’d do anything to keep my mother alive.

Anything, including ask Ian Kerr for help. I don’t know much about him, except that he has more money than some small countries. And he’s willing to spend it on me. Just one catch: there’s a string attached, and not just the one I feel pulling me into his arms and his bed. There’s also the plan for revenge he wants my help with.
Every time he says my name, it makes my body shiver and my heart stutter. I know he’s going to wreck me, know there won’t be anything left of me but lust and sensation by the time he’s done with me, but even though I can see the heartbreak coming towards me like a train, ready to crash into me, I can’t get out of the way. I want what he makes me feel. Want what he’s offering.

This may have started out as something to save my mother, but now…now it’s about what he makes me feel. I’m in danger of losing everything that’s important. Worse? Ian's whispered words and hot caresses are making me believe that's okay.

“Bad morning?”

The question comes from a rich deep voice to my right. Some stupid actor, probably. The notes of his voice are perfectly modulated as if he spent years perfecting the tone and depth to reach the biggest audience.

“Yeah, what’s it to you?” I challenge because I’m not in the mood to be chatted up by some wannabe in an off, off Broadway production who wants to try out some new lines on a messenger girl.

My sneering gaze melts right off my face when it lands on the owner of the voice. Dark haired and dark eyed, the stranger gives me a slow smile as I take him in. He’s tall, much taller than my five foot four inch frame. I have to trek upward to see the entire package.

And there’s so much to appreciate from his trim waist to the wide shoulders encased in a gray wool suit coat that fits him so well I wonder if he was sewn into it. Tiny stitches on the lapel mark it’s expensive provenance. A dark tanned neck gives way to a firm chin and lush lips.

Bee stung is the description that I’ve heard used to describe the same look on super models. Those lips are about the only soft thing on his face. Those lips and a hollow on the side of his face that appears when those plush lips curve upward. The divot is too shallow and wide to be termed a dimple, but it’s just as devastating.

One hand is stuck in a pocket and his jacket is pushed behind the hand to reveal a flat stomach. No desk paunch on this guy. There’s an intense sexual aura about him. The nonchalant stance, the dark gaze, the lush lips are all an invitation to rip the buttons of his snowy white shirt apart and see exactly what lies underneath all of those fabrics.

I stick a thumb under my jaw under the guise of giving my chin a scratch just to make sure my mouth is closed. This guy? He can practice lines with me all he wants.
