How far will you go when you have nothing left to lose?
When she lost her soul mate, Caleb, Eve felt like her world had ended. Trapped in the palace, forced to play the part of the happy, patriotic princess of The New America—and the blushing bride of her father's top adviser—Eve's whole life is a lie. The only thing that keeps her going is Caleb's memory, and the revolution he started.
Now, Eve is taking over where Caleb left off. With the help of Moss, an undercover subversive in the King's court, she plots to take down The New America, beginning with the capital, the City of Sand. Will Eve be able to bring about a new, free world when she's called upon to perform the ultimate act of rebellion—killing her father?
In Rise, Eve must choose who to leave behind, who to save, and who to fight as Anna Carey's epic tale of romance and sacrifice in the chilling dystopia of The New America comes to a stunning conclusion.
I fell in love with this series from the moment I began reading Eve. Everything about the story appealed to me: the characters, led by the incredibly endearing Eve; the history that created this world; the danger, action and adventure; and most of all Anna Carey's incredible writing. And I have to say that throughout the series, Carey has never been afraid to take risks with the story. No one was safe, and I found myself heartbroken more than once.
So having read Eve and Once, I was extremely anxious for Rise. I mean, the ending of Once was so brutal, and I had to know what happened next. Now that I have read Rise, I can say that I did like the story, and Carey's writing is still gorgeous.
In an effort to keep this spoiler free, I'm not going to go into the plot. At all. I can say, though, that the story is surprising, intense, and brutal. And I do applaud Carey for not making the story easy, and for not holding any punches. And though I felt it was authentic to someone of her age and circumstance, I know that some readers have felt Eve was impulsive and reckless. I think they would appreciate her character growth in Rise.
At the conclusion of the series, I can say that I am satisfied. I thought the story was extremely well-paced and well-written. Did everything I want to happen come to pass? I won't say, because if you've read the series, you'll know what I'm talking about. I did feel the ending was extremely abrupt. In fact, I was about to tear my ARC apart looking for missing pages. I didn't like that it just stopped, though I can maybe see why that happened. I will say that I would love if an epilogue had been added. Having said that, I still think Rise was a very satisfactory ending to the Eve Series.

He'd left so much space in my life. The expansive, hollow feeling seemed impossible to fill with anything else. In the past weeks I felt it in everything I did. It was in the shifting current of my thoughts, the nights now spent alone, the sheets beside me cold. This is where he used to be, I'd think. How can I possibly live with all this empty space?

Ah! I started Eve so long ago on ebook, but it expired before I got a chance to finish it, and then I ended up never getting back to it! I definitely want to, especially after seeing how much you enjoyed it! Glad to hear this series had a satisfying end!
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by the character growth you mentioned because I've ALWAYS taken issue with how impulsive Eve was. She never seems to think anything through! I'll probably get this one on audio soon just so I can finish it off, even though I didn't particularly like either of the previous two books. *sigh* I'm just a glutton for punishment, I guess. I do like the covers, though. :P
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like this series is pretty intense. I have read a few reviews of the other books and am definitely curious about the series. The trouble is, dystopians always make me so nervous now. I have read so many really good ones that it is so easy for it to feel really cliche and bad. But I like that you mention that in this series no one is safe, that is really cool and I don't often get that feeling from books. Great review Andrea!
ReplyDeleteI still want to start this series, but glad that it stays good and characters are still awesome by the end.

I haven't read any of this series yet, but it sounds really great! I love it when an author doesn't hold back and really just goes with it and makes it believable and not easy. I do plan on reading this series at some point. Awesome review and thanks for keeping it spoiler free.
ReplyDeleteMan, I really need to start this series some time--or at least try it! I saw mixed reactions to the first book, but if you're still enjoying it after the third one, that's a good sign. Thanks for the review, Andrea. :)

I love these reviews! I think I end up putting more books on my TBR by your recommendations. :)
ReplyDeleteI am always so behind in popular series like this one! Those stunning front covers alone are enough to make me want to read these books. After reading your review for Rise, I'm even more determined to start these Anna Carey books.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you found Rise to be a satisfactory ending to this series. It's a shame about the abrupt ending though - I just hate it when the author decides to end the book so suddenly, and like you, I start searching for the missing pages ;)
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review (and very intriguing quote) with us, Andrea. And thank you so much for keeping it spoiler free! :)
This review is perfect timing! This series was just recommended to me, but I wasn't sure if it was really one I would enjoy. Your awesome review has me deciding that it is! Adding it to the list today! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts <3
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit worried about reading Rise because even though I did not love Eve, I did really enjoy Once and so far I have only heard one other opinion of Rise and it was a negative one, espesh in regards to the ending.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear that you enjoyed this and was satisfied, even without an epilogue, I don't feel so hesitant to read it now :)
You're not the first person to mention wanting an epilogue... That worries me a little (if en ending isn't exactly the way I want it, it will bother me for days!), but I'm glad you enjoyed this one overall. I haven't read the second book yet, though I enjoyed the first quite a bit. Great review, Andrea!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this series but have always wanted to. Your description makes me want to read it all the more. Thanks for getting me more excited to read it, Andrea! :)
ReplyDeleteI still need to grab a copy of Once, this is a series I really want to get back into.
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased you enjoyed Rise despite the abrupt ending - I love the quote you shared as well. A fab review Andrea! :-)
I have Eve on my Kindle so it is just a matter of me finally getting to it. I am excited to start it, but it seems people are wishy washy with the last book. Still excited to read this series. Great review Andrea!
ReplyDeleteI just read this one and my review goes up next week. I felt like this was my least favorite of the series, and the end was very abrupt. We waited through the whole book for that 'thing' to happen and we never actually see it occur, it drove me nuts! It was still a good book and it wasn't a horrible ending at least.
ReplyDeleteAndrea this series has been on my list forever, and i actually own book one *eyes nook* what i need is about 6 months in a room with just me, my books and lots and lots of coffee. Wonderful review i hope to read them soon.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you enjoyed this series. I have the first book, but haven't gotten to it yet. Hopefully, soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to starting this series!
ReplyDeleteI have the first book and it's even signed by the author (she's very sweet) but I have yet to read it. I must change that now that all the books are out. Too bad the ending was a bit abrupt though. Wonderful review Andrea. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked this sereis. It wasn't for me but everyone has a different experience. Thanks for sharing.
