Happy Holidays ( Love, Actually - Style) !

Hey, guys! It's Christmas Eve, finally! I am taking a blog break through New Year's Day.
Don't fret, I'll be back on January 2, just as crazy as ever.
But before I go, I wanted to leave you with some Christmas Cheer, "Andrea-style", courtesy of my favorite holiday movie Love, Actually.

The story of mine & hubby's life.
Simply because I love Colin Firth.
Andrew Lincoln, sans zombies. Sigh...

Take a cue from Billy,  Live It Up!

I hope you all have Happy Holidays, however you celebrate!

Cassandra Clare Signing

So, last week, I went to the Cassandra Clare event in Brentwood, Tennessee, just a bit outside of Nashville. Cassandra Clare is one of my very favorite authors (Top Two), of two of my favorite series, ever. I'll admit, I'm partial to The Mortal Instruments series. But anyway, I love Cassandra Clare so much that I drove 5 1/2 hours, one way, to see her.

Going to the signing was also a great chance to meet one of my good Twitter/blogging buddies, Heather (@SPNHeather) of SupaGurlBooks. It felt like a blind date. The moment our eyes met across the crowded children's section of Barnes & Noble, it was as if we'd been friends forever. Heather is a complete sweetheart, and possibly the most hyper person I've ever met! Seriously, the makers of all the energy drinks need to get her in a lab and study her body chemistry.

Anyway...the time came. We were all anxiously, and painfully (it was crowded, there were no chairs and I am tall) waiting. I was talking to Heather, looking down, and happened to look up, directly into the eyes of Cassandra Clare herself! She was joined by Vania (@VLC_Photo) who shoots the book trailers AND Carson Nicely, aka Will Herondale from the book trailers. (Cue the Squees!) Every time I looked at him, I thought "Dirty Sexy Balconey Scene"! I had heard he was going to be there, but apparently a lot of the attendees had not, b/c there was a significant amount of panicking going on!

I have to say, the boy did look good. He stood beside Ms. Clare, smiling the entire time. He never looked put out, or as if the references to his anatomy bothered him in any way, and there were a lot fo references! He seemed super-sweet.

Cassandra was a gracious, funny and easy speaker. The entire session was a Q&A, with lots of great, thoughtful questions asked. I never asked a question, didn't really even try, but Heather sure did. The girl was bouncing up and down like a kid!

When the time for the signing came, apparently Heather and I missed the memo. We were sitting there listening, when all of a sudden everyone else had lined up and we were just sitting by ourselves, on the floor, in a virtual ghost town. When we got feeling back in our legs, we were the very last people in line. Knowing we had plenty of time, we went over and spoke to Vania and Carson, who gave us signed posters and we got pictures with Carson, who seemed so genuinely nice. The boy has an infectious smile, I smiled watching him smile. And what a good sport, women were asking to touch his abs, for him to take his shirt off.  It was pretty funny.

After that, Heather and I went over to Starbucks, got drinks, and the line still hadn't moved. Coffee in hand, we prepared ourselves for the long haul. Within a few minutes, we were chatting with another attendee, Morgan,  and after a few minutes, we discovered that we all shared a lot of the same Twitter buds. Such a small world! With the three of us chatting, the almost two hour wait to get our books signed flew by.

When it was my turn to get my book signed, I of course, froze. I couldn't think of one clever thing to say to Cassie, so I just stood there, mute. I did, however, get it together long enough to ask for a picture. She was awesome, and totally worth the over 11 hour round-trip.

Wow, this post was about 45 paragraphs longer than I intended. But I do want to include pics. And just so you know, Carson squeezed me extra tight on the shoulder.  I think he knows a good thing when he sees it! ;-)

Review ~ Requiem for the Devil, by Jeri Smith-Ready

Set in modern-day Washington, D.C., Requiem for the Devil depicts the end of the Devil's ten-billion-year career. For the first time in his existence, Lucifer falls in love, and this event threatens to transform his identity and perhaps even his destiny. Gianna O'Keefe is the woman who drags him out of his ancient despair and points him toward possible salvation. Yet Lucifer's path from evil is neither straight nor smooth.

Pursuing love means betraying his fellow fallen angels, the loyal friends who once followed him to damnation. Divine and infernal forces seem to conspire against his and Gianna's union. Lucifer's empire crumbles around him as he dares to defy the natural order and question his fate.

I've been turning this one over in my mind for over a day now. This is a tough, tough review to write. Not because I didn't like it, I loved Requiem for the Devil. I think this is so hard because I don't think I can adequately explain this book. But I feel this book deserves a review, however inadequate I may be.

Quite simply, Requiem is a story of the transformative power of love, and redemption. There has never been a "bigger baddie" than the devil. To take the ultimate scary, bad guy and turn him into an actual character with layer upon layer of issues, took a massive amount of skill and to me, courage. I was not prepared to face the way "Louis"/aka Lucifer was portrayed. Basically, it's the ultimate study in Daddy Issues. Jeri Smith-Ready was able to take Louis and make him into a son who made horrible mistakes, was forsaken by his Father, and though he acts and claims to hate his Father, deep down wants that love. I feel like my brain was scrambled just getting that thought out coherently because it is the antithesis to everything I've been taught about the devil.

I had a friend who said her friend wouldn't read Requiem for the Devil for religious reasons. But this book is SO not anti-religion. Gianna, with whom Louis falls in love, is deeply religious. I just feel, as in so many situations in real life, that if you can first of all, Calm Down and go into the book with an Open Mind, you'll be surprised. Requiem is not anti-religion, it simply questions, which I love because I happen to question everything, and ultimately, it's actually a religious affirmation.
I have, until now, left out the woman responsible for Louis' transformation, Gianna. Once again, Jeri Smith-Ready has done a brilliant job with her female lead. This is my third series (this isn't a series, but you get what I'm saying) of her's and each one has smart, tough, take-no-crap women. Gianna is a political player in Washington, D.C., fighting for the poor. She goes toe-to-toe with the most evil being in existence. She is passionate, funny, and imperfect. She will definitely go down as one of the most memorable characters I've read.
It should go without saying that I cried. Duh, right? It just wouldn't be a Jeri Smith-Ready book if there wasn't sobbing and blubbering going on. She know how to bring it every time. Requiem for the Devil came out in 2001, years before Shane and Ciara; Logan, Aura and Zach. But it is as worthy of your time as any of her other books.
Favorite Quote:

"I can only beg the muse of history to include this among my legacies - that I loved Gianna as well as I
 could."
"If Heaven is the sun, then Gianna was the moon for me - a pale, brilliant reflection of God's love in
the midnight of my long, dark existence."

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's WoW selection is...
Inhale (Just Breathe Trilogy, #1)Strangers in reality, inseparable in dreams…

After years of suffocating under her boss’s scrutiny, whale biologist Zoe Morgan finally lands a job as director of a tagging project in Hervey Bay, Australia. Success Down Under all but guarantees her the promotion of a lifetime, and Zoe won’t let anything—or anyone—stand in her way. Not the whale voices she suddenly hears in her head, not the ex who won’t take no for an answer, and especially not the gorgeous figment of her imagination who keeps saving her from the fiery hell of her dreams.

Gavin Cassidy hasn’t been called to help a human Wyldling in over a year, which is fine by him. Still blaming himself for the death of his partner, he keeps the guilt at bay by indulging in every excess his rock star persona affords. That is, until he’s summoned to protect Zoe from the Fyres and learns his new charge is the key to restoring order in the dying Dreaming. He never expects to fall for the feisty Dr. Morgan…nor does he realize he may have to sacrifice the woman he loves to save an entire country.

Review ~ Love and Leftovers by Sarah Tregay

My wish is to fall cranium over Converse in dizzy daydream-worthy love.

(If only it were that easy.

Marcie has been dragged away from home for the summer—from Idaho to a family summerhouse in New Hampshire. She’s left behind her friends, a group of freaks and geeks called the Leftovers, including her emo-rocker boyfriend, and her father.

By the time Labor Day rolls around, Marcie suspects this “summer vacation” has become permanent. She has to start at a new school, and there she leaves behind her Leftover status when a cute boy brings her breakfast and a new romance heats up. But understanding love, especially when you’ve watched your parents’ affections end, is elusive. What does it feel like, really? Can you even know it until you’ve lost it?

Love & Leftovers is a beautifully written story of one girl’s journey navigating family, friends, and love, and a compelling and sexy read that teens will gobble up whole.  (From Harper Collins website)

Oh, wow. Talk about a sleeper! Love and Leftovers took me by complete surprise. Being that it was written in verse, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I guess I thought the verses would be little separate stories that didn't necessarily tell a linear story, but it so does. Love and Leftovers was a complete, beautiful, full story told in these small, heartbreaking segments that completely drew me in.

The entire story is told from Marcie's point of view. The book is actually her poetry journal. A journal that chronicles Marcie's struggles with the split of her parents, her cross-country move that separates her from her boyfriend and friends, making friends in her new home, a new relationship, and all the way back around in a complete circle. It documents her confusion with her parents, her mother's debilitating depression, her need to be wanted by a boy... just on and on.

Love and Leftovers would be a fabulous read for teens, especially reluctant readers. The tiny segments keep the pages turning, trying to learn what Marcie will address next. Teen sexuality, the confusion and the importance of timing, is a big theme to the story. This book is the perfect book for teens, but really, I think it's perfect for anyone. I read this book in under two hours; I literally could not put it down. All around, I couldn't recommend Love and Leftovers more highly.

Review ~ The Fallen Queen (The House of Arkhangel'sk, #1) by Jane Kindred

Heaven can go to hell.

Until her cousin slaughtered the supernal family, Anazakia’s father ruled the Heavens, governing noble Host and Fallen peasants alike. Now Anazakia is the last grand duchess of the House of Arkhangel’sk, and all she wants is to stay alive.

Hunted by Seraph assassins, Anazakia flees Heaven with two Fallen thieves—fire demon Vasily and air demon Belphagor, each with their own nefarious agenda—who hide her in the world of Man. The line between vice and virtue soon blurs, and when Belphagor is imprisoned, the unexpected passion of Vasily warms her through the Russian winter.

Heaven seems a distant dream, but when Anazakia learns the truth behind the celestial coup, she will have to return to fight for the throne—even if it means saving the man who murdered everyone she loved.
~From GoodReads

What a book! At first glance, I would have written The Fallen Queen off as a strictly High Fantasy book. And it is a Fantasy, a great one at that, full of deceit, betrayal, and despair. The world building is beautiful and complex, involving a Heaven more elaborate than I could have ever imagined. It was perhaps a bit complex for my taste, but I just sort of let the intricate political and geographical bits go and took in the rest of the details, which I loved.

What really jerked me into the story and held me captivated was the relationship between Anazakia and Vasily, and Vasily and Belphagor. I don't even know where to begin. It was weird...and HOT.  When I say weird, I'm not even talking about genders and sexuality, that's not important.  I'm talking about the, I don't know, fluidness, of the relationships. I'm sure I am not properly conveying my thoughts, but honestly, I'm still reeling over the triangle. Wow!

At it's core, The Fallen Queen is the story of a girl whose entire life is ripped apart. It reminded me, and this story is even referred to, of Anastasia.  Anazakia, (oh, I just got the name similarity) was a brave, resourceful girl who literally makes the best of what is handed to her. If you like Fantasy books, at all, this one is highly recommended.

Blog Tour: The Ascended by Tiffany King

Hey, guys! Welcome to today's stop on THE ASCENDED Blog Tour. I have such a great post for you, an excerpt from THE ASCENDED. When I first read th, I felt like my heart was about to stop! I don't know when in the book it takes place, but ohmygosh, it makes me want to read The ASCENDED right now! Be sure to keep reading after the excerpt to find out how to win big on the blog tour!
Enjoy!

"Sooooo," I said, dragging out the word. "I guess you could say things are starting to look a little clearer for me today. For months now, in the back of my mind, I've held on to the fantasy that Mark allowed his father to alter his feelings to protect me. I thought all he would need to do is see me again and I would be able to help him find his way back, but I've come to realize that even if that proved to be true, our relationship will never be the same again." I said in a rush, trying to get all the words out before he could interject. "Because, I'm no longer a Guide, right?" I asked.

Haniel nodded his head, letting me continue.

"And Mark is no longer my Protector, right?"

"That is correct."

"If Mark can be saved, will his soul link with another Guide?" I asked, ignoring the phantom hand that seemed to grip my heart.

"Your link was severed when Mark left with his father, eliminating what you were both created for in that instant. Mark is no longer a Protector; therefore, his soul will not link with any other Guide."

"If I have become some mystical Ascended being, what has Mark become?" I asked, finally getting to the root of my questions.

"That is yet to be determined. The Dark One has cloaked Victor and Mark well, leaving us unable to know their futures."

"So, if Mark can be saved, he will be something else like me?" I probed.

"Yes."

"And that something could be very bad if we are unable to save him, right?"

"That is correct."

Now for the good stuff the prizes:

  1. Regular prizes (boring): Every 3 days, I will pull the names of people that have left comments on the previous 3 blogs and will do a random drawing for an ebook of one of The Saving Angels books. Over the course of the 24 day blog hop 8 ebooks will be given out.
  2. Grand Prizes (woot woot): For every person that leaves a comment on one of the blogs they will be entered in to win a signed poster of one of my book covers. 3 posters in all will be given out (one of each of the book covers). I will also be giving away a signed set of all three books so you will have 4 different chances to win a grand prize. Extra entries will be given out for every blog you leave a comment on, so if you visit all 24 blogs you will have 24 entries into the grand prize drawing (eek).

A Letter Review ~ The Truth About Forever, by Sarah Dessen

Sixteen-year-old Macy Queen is looking forward to a long, boring summer. Her boyfriend is going away. She's stuck with a dull-as-dishwater job at the library. And she'll spend all of her free time studying for the SATs or grieving silently with her mother over her father's recent unexpected death. But everything changes when Macy is corralled into helping out at one of her mother's open house events, and she meets the chaotic Wish Catering crew. Before long, Macy joins the Wish team. She loves everything about the work and the people. But the best thing about Wish is Wes—artistic, insightful, and understanding Wes—who gets Macy to look at life in a whole new way, and really start living it.
~From GoodReads

Dear Sarah Dessen,

Where have you been my whole life??!!

Seriously, this is one of those "it's not you, it was me" situations. I've spent the last several years reading almost only young adult/adult paranormal books. I thought a Contemporary Young Adult book couldn't possibly hold my attention. I needed the fang, the venom, the curses and spells and, well, you know what I mean, right?

But after years of looking at your books and thinking "Looks good, too bad it's not my type", I took what thousands have been saying about your books to heart, and I took a chance. I am so happy I finally wised up. I loved each and every character in this book: Bert, and Kristy, and Delia and Monica (Donneven), Macy and Wes. The Truth About Forever was beautiful, wistful, poignant, life-affirming... I could keep going, but you've heard all of this before. You're Sarah-freaking-Dessen!

If your other books are half as brilliant as The Truth About Forever, consider me a fan for life. I'm buying all of your books ASAP. Thank you. Thank you for writing books about endearing, slightly broken, charming, wonderful characters.  Books that I will be so happy to share with my daughter one day (b/c really, I am not letting her read the Night Huntress books, uh-uh).

I guess what I'm trying to say, in my own rambling way, is The Truth About Forever was amazing.

Thank you,
Andrea, a passionate reader

But in a land shrouded in magic, and filled with as many friends as there are foes, will the young women be able to reach Gaïa in time, or will the forces of evil take over Utopia and forever haunt the universes?
